OK, how do I send these custom/animated emoticons? I can't find them anywhere in Messenger.

Dude, you can only RECEIVE, not send.

It says on Microsoft's site that I can "choose from a new selection of animated emoticons" so i should be able to send them.

But yes, I now know I can only receive the custom ones (that's just sheer laziness from M$ - what an amazingly pathetic update this is, all that time and it gives me: a big, low res picture; brushed metal GUI; a stupid WTF is that for "corporate" tab.

Wow-ee....

Disappointed

What a disappointment Messenger 5 is!

I used it for 5 minutes then went back to using iChat for my MSN messaging, much nicer and better integration into the iApps.

Okay, there's no file transfer options, but I can get around that if I need to by using the newly painted MS Messenger!

Well I like it. MSN 4 was way more reliable than any of the other msn clients such as adium, so I got used to the text only thing.

And now there are pictures. It feels like christmas.

Ha! I've been using Adium for about a month now, and have had one unexpected disconnect. MSN, on the other hand, would typically disconnect 1 or 2 times per day!

Ha!... I mean, um, ok I'll download Adium.

Are you on wireless? That might decrease stability a bit.

Yeah, actually I'm on an unwired broadband service filtered through my airport, so it's 5000% unstable. I guess I was just going through a crazy unwarranted microsoft phase... (you mean you don't get them?)

I'm not even going to bother downloading it. no webcam/isight support? screw it. even my current damn SCREENSAVER uses my iSight!

Well an update is better then nothing, just why Microsoft Messenger when on the Wintel side it is MSN Messenger

I just tried to change my picture, there is no way to change the visible area of the picture, you can't resize it, can't move it around, nothing.

Basically it sucks big time.

Its due to Microsoft's new business strategy with messenger. They are taking the focus away from .net and MSN and making it more viabl for businesses, intergrating it with their new business messeging system and server products. The Windows version is still "MSN Messenger" because they haven't make the switch yet. The Mac version is now a "hybrid", so to speak, to bring these new changes about. I guess it was easier to start small and do the Mac market first. So instead of it being totally just "MSN Messenger", it is now "Microsoft Messenger" as it does more than MSN.

So one good thing about this version of messenger that we can brag about for all of 5 seconds is the fact that is has support for some different protocols through its "corporate" section, something that the Windows version does not have yet. It will only last for 5 seconds as we realise that even though we have it no average user will be able to use it, and that we have been conned!

Well apart from a few naggly little things during installation and first use my messenger seems pretty sturdy right now. I'd stopped using the older messenger for a while before this one came out and now its on almost constantly again, so it can't be that bad. Mind you I am touching a lot of wood here, just incase!

I'm concentrating more on the new look and enjoying using it with pictures and emoticons than worrying about no webcam support at the moment! Ye it really bugs me but I'm getting on with it until it comes out!.

Are you using the animated emoticons? If so, How?

No not animated emoticons, can only receive those. But can send & receive standard emoticons, as well as receive custom emoticons, but not animated ones. (Well, haven't been sent any to try but I don't think it will work anyway). Sorry for the confusion.

Bugger, Microsoft is lying, it says explicitly on their site that you can use animated emoticons.

My appologies, some of the standard emoticons are slightly animated, such as the crying and winking etc. These DO work.

They are animated in the same way that they are in the Windows version. I was thinking about more advanced emoticons and winks. (I've only just got up, bare with me!)

To clarify: I can both SEND and RECEIVE these basic animated emoticons.

Just select the crying face etc from the emoticon menu and it should be animated.

Sorry about that confusion!

I've just heard some time ago that this is part of Microsoft new strategy to put it's brand in evidence. A lot of softwares will change their names to microsft wathever...

is it possible to view my friend's pictures in the main window itself?
it is annoying that i have to double click on their name first and then be able to see their display pictures.
