Messenger 5 for Mac

Honestly I think the main reason for no Webcam support is that the Messenger in Windows has the video feature built into the OS. So porting webcam to the Mac would take MS to needing to write the protocols to support compatibility with the Windows APIs and they'd need to write a WMV encoder on the Mac (I think their webcam streams WMV). Also consider that their webcam might do WMV3 - which has been unplayable on a Mac forever (VLC, Mplayer, nor WMP for Mac will play it).

This is a pretty nice update - as I understand getting that corporate thing in there was a feat in itself (a few businesses use the corp network for things I guess).

the pictures also should show up in the chat window like in iChat so i just turn off the picture sidebar btw.

No problems on my end - abite that Messenger won't reconnect after waking my pb, but that doesn't hinder performance.
 
the logitech codec has been reverse engineered already, and working implementations have being done in java (mercury) and c, being usable from any language that allows to link to c libraries.

They didn't include support because they would need to do it themselves (due to licensing) and they just didn't want/have the time.

Go figure, I wait for over a year to FINALLY get dumb features like display pics and emoticons, and what happens?

It can't connect.

I've been retrying it for over an hour. I've also re-downloaded and reinstalled it a bunch of times.

And you know the kicker? Version 4.01 doesn't connect either now.

Yeesh.

Apparently didn't have the time to upload the program to their website properly either!

Licensing WMV for webcam use in messenger brings an interesting point with Windows Media Player for Mac, which is also restricted. They would have to do both, would they not, for this to work? Give Mac users full use of WMV as in Windows. Microsoft are very protective and tempermental about their media things. But you would have thought they would have bowed down to the market leader. (But then again you could say the same about Apple with OS X and Windows!!)

.....Still having trouble, it keeps kicking me off after 3 mins or so.....i'm goin back to Adium!

Well, after saying I've not had any problems with connection it will not let me add any more contacts to my list!! Gutted.

EDIT - Works ok now!!...

EDIT - Dropped out on me once so far....quickly reconnected, apart from that its fine! I'm certainly enjoying the new look at least!
 
How come this works differently to you guys? Works perfect to me. The only problem I had was a real slow download from the US M$ site.
 
works just fine for me.. took awhile to delete the "old" version... nevertheless, it seems to work fine now..
 
for all of you people complaining about the long time to delete the old version: READ THE SCREEN. You don't need to wait, just press next.

Clicking "next" will stop looking for previous versions and KEEP THEM INSTALLED, and NOT get rid of them. That's what it says. You have to wait to get rid of previous versions.
 
I downloaded it fine, went at about 100kb/s (I'm on 1mb) and that was straight after it got put it on the site. Seems pretty good so far, I'm liking the brushed metal but the windows are very bulky. I like being able to change my display name in one click unlike Adium. I think I'm going to carry on using it. If it starts chucking my off it every 10mins I'll go back to Adium though.
 
does anyone else have trouble recieving custom emoticons? i can recieve a few but not all of them get thru and it takes a long time for some to load

Ye I do. First time I received some all I got was a small white box, it eventually displayed correctly. After a few delays on some they were fine. Once I've had one emoticon it seems to know it and load it fine next time.
 
It's running fine for me, though it lacks whatever it is that I expected it to feature. Oh well, at least I'v got pictures now!~ ;)

Yes I have a few times, not sure why. It was early on, no more problems yet!!
 
I just managed to log onto Adium and msn messenger 5 at the same time using the same ID. Well I did for 3 mins then msn kicked me off. I think I'm gonna stick with adium. Im pretty sure someones gonna bring out an messenger 5 skin for Adium anyway!

No, it's one app with all the languages in it. There are about 8 different links on their site, but they all point to the same file.
 
Dammit! I was hoping they'd write it in Cocoa (I think it's Cocoa :eek:) so that the Dictionary/Spell Check function would work. There are three types of applications which simply must have a spell checking function:

• Any kind of eMail application
• Any kind of word processing application
• Any kind of instant messaging application

The UI has taken a step backwards from Messenger 4. I liked the stripped-back look of 4. They seem to have gone a little over-the-top with 5 (ie the login animation).

But I guess I'll still use it, despite it's shortcomings. All of the alternatives feel too clunky - "lesser of two evils" and all that :rolleyes:.
 
there's nothing here that will stop me from using Adium. :(

i was at least hoping to play a bit of minesweeper flags with someone. :p
 
I'v been disconnected 10 times in the last three minutes. Also, when I do actually connect, I can only receive messages, not send them. :( SO FRUSTRATING.
