No way Apple announces a $3,000 headset and expect the average Joe to buy it when they see a $300 one.

This headset better be mindblowing stuff to justify the price!

You have pretty much described the history of Apple-related criticism. Since I joined Macrumours, I have seen people claim time after time that X Apple product was doomed because of the existence of a cheaper alternative. And things then play out the opposite way.

The iPhone is more popular than ever, despite the existence of cheaper smartphones.

Apple is getting away with selling $1000 smartwatches, with their own thriving band ecosystem. Same with AirPods.

It sometimes feel like there is no tablet market, only the ipad market.

I predict Apple gets away with it because they know the iPhone user base tends to have more disposable income, and said product will be integrated more deeply with their ecosystem than the competition. In this context, it doesn’t matter that the competition is cheaper if it offers a worse experience.

Worse is if the low prices means these companies can’t remain financially sustainable.

Cheaper isn’t always better, especially if you want your preferred business to stick around for the long run.

Having to not be able to use my glasses on the new Apple headset is a nightmare. I love how the quest pro is able to be used with any glasses . I think this Apple rumour is wrong. Tim Cook uses glasses, I think he would love to keep using his glasses while working in AR

Clearly the purpose of apples headset is to get it into the hands of developers. At that price it’s not a consumer product which is fine. 2025 for the consumer version and it’ll have titles galore hopefully.

No I agree but this community is not the average user. But even at that price will there be enough interest?

Anyone with no clue/experience with AR/VR will look at the sticker price first.

Hope I’m wrong and Apple does release something revolutionary. And it does win over the masses…

At $999 Tim!

Apple has a pretty good track record of popularising product categories that previously didn’t get much traction. I reference the first iPhone, where the proclamation of it being an internet communicator was met with tepid reception, but would end up being the most used part of the device.

All this talk about pricing, whether it will be revolutionary or not, or even about being late to the party, I feel it’s all just concern trolling. What’s revolutionary isn’t always obvious at the start, and what Apple does end up announcing this week isn’t nearly as important as their long term product roadmap for it.

I fear too many people are going into WWDC with wildly unrealistic expectations, and are simply chomping at the bit to declare it a failure the moment it doesn’t meet them. These people, of course, will end up being wrong in the long term (such is the fate of all who bet against Apple), but it won’t stop them from smugly claiming that Apple is doomed in the short term.

$300 vs $3000 !
The Apple headset should better be something outstanding, out of this world... otherwise it will be as popular as a Newton.
The truth will be unveiled on Tuesday... can't wait!
So it did turned out to be the best so far…very impressive. And for all it packs, the price may be somewhat justified. Time to start saving up for it.

I can’t wait for a cheaper version of the Vision Pro. A lot of the core AR experiences can be experienced with a cheaper quest headset. The chipset makes the vision pro a winner in how alive the UX feels..

That’s great! I already enjoy similar experiences with my quest pro!

The hand gestures are accurate and fast too.

You will not want to pick up an iPad again.

the problem of wearing glasses is that their frames limit your field of view, killing the full-immersion experience.
Perhaps, wearing contacts may be a solution although I consider that having custom lenses made for $100.00 to natively fit the device may be a healthier solution for your eyes.
