In a paywalled report published earlier today, The Information claims that Meta stopped the development of its operating system designed for Oculus virtual-reality devices and the company's upcoming augmented-reality glasses in November 2021, citing people familiar with the matter. Work on the operating system had reportedly been underway since 2017 and involved more than 300 Meta employees.
This might have more to do with the competition from other large companies? Example Qalcomm and Microsoft are partnering to develop a new, customized Snapdragon augmented reality chip that’ll power future AR glasses within Microsoft’s ecosystems. The new partnership was announced at Qualcomm’s CES 2022 keynote.

Then you have actual announcements of similar products such as TCL reveals the new Leiniao AR smart glasses at CES 2022

They just changed their name to Meta but will no longer own a platform the entire concept is based on. Time to change the company's name back to Facebook I guess. I can think of some choice alternative names as well?

Actually, he's not bad looking, but takes zero effort in making himself look human. He must actually like looking like a puppet. Then again, with all that money maybe it's just his way :D

And he doesn't try to look cool. Give him that. (Maybe just a few tats. Leather? Chicks with enhancements. Yeah that's it.)

To me, he gives off way too high of a 'creep vibe'. Same with Musk. Bill Gates was okay. Steve Ballmer had some creep vibe too. I had a chance run-in with Rudy Giuliani at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store, and talk about bizarre vibes. Wow... And some people there were celebrating seeing him, and he was just so creepy. Ran into Samuel L Jackson in DC, and he was awesome. Peter Gabriel too. Some famous people are great humans, and others are just... Riding the spectrum?

It's because Facebook/Meta employees are unoriginal and unimaginative and could not imagine how to innovate in this space, since all they did was create cartoon versions of people sitting in an office doing nothing but pinching and zooming floating images/video/text.

Obligatory HFSP.

It's a niche market, for now, but so was the iPod until it caught on. Boeing uses VR to assemble and diagnose their planes. There are people using VR to great benefit, and gaming is just the next wave of it, but it has to be done well, or people will get burned out over it. Michael Crichton, in his book Disclosure, used a VR operating system as a plot device and nearly a character. Loved that book. Read it straight through after I bought it.

Existing Oculus devices, such as the Quest 2, run a modified version of Android called VROS, but Meta was designing a new OS from scratch to support its ambitions in the AR and VR space, a project known internally as "XROS."
We all know what it's gonna take for these things to be the next big thing--the same thing that made the Internet a big deal. The porn industry is gonna write its own OS for Oculus to use with its services. They'll call it EROS.

I wonder if it's because Zuck has to be involved in everything. I can imagine him being a PITA to work for/with. Like the lead singer that claims that THEY ARE THE BAND!!! and taints everything the group does so they look good. *shrug*

There is.

The lead of the Facebook AR team left after the Frances Haguenes (sp) Congressional testimony.

Without the lead. (prob. the only person who knew what they were doing in that company) left. They shut it down.

The lead of the project then went to Google's version.

So if Facebook had not been such a scum bag of a company. He would prob. still be there.
And think about it. 1. Project lead goes to Google to help get their version up and running. 2. Google spends millions on R&D. 3. Meta licenses it back to use on their hardware, maybe even exclusively for a while. Saving millions in R&D dollars. 4. Profit!

He does travel with an entourage when out and about. I've seen TC walking around Palo Alto solo a few times. Or sitting in a Starbux doing something with his iPad. Like any other regular person. Low key.
Top Cat?
Sadly, Facebook (Meta) can’t get the software and hardware right.
If it was easy everyone would be doing it...... as far as I am concerned Apple has no peers in this area.

Kinda impotence in this Meta. Didn't they developed also a smartphone? They know only one thing. To steal data.

Smells fishy. There's got to be more to it.
Yup. Meta is moving full steam ahead with VR AR. Quest II is already a great early experience at a consumer price point. They didn't rename their trillion dollar company on a whim. Cambria will be an upgrade for sure and Meta will have a place as this all evolves. It will be great to see apples device when it is ready. I will be first in line.

Reputably hundreds of "the best & smartest" SW engineers on the planet have worked on the "MetaOS" for years starting out with no tech debt (blank slate). FBook changes it name to Meta to underscore the importance of its next generation product. And Meta walks away ??? At least Google has had a minor deployment of Fuschia which is kinda similar re: new OS bet. The "MetaVerse" is so nascient one would think Meta would keep this option open. May not know the whole story.

I personally do NOT think that's a smart move !

Consider this, if Palm's webOS had just limp'd-along for a few years @ a 10% OR so effort level, starting just-prior to April 2010, when it was sold to HP, it "could" have 10-15% of the smartphone market by now (if they had played their cards right AFTER those first few years) !

There is a lesson to be learned there.

At least I believe that to be the case.

BTW, QCOM now holds ALL or most of the patents related to webOS.

I didn't know that until just a few minutes ago ! ... & it's now got me thinking :)
