Did they buy it from LG?

I thought LG has the webOS stuff.

Or maybe LG licensed it from QCom?

That mug…

I am not a violent man, I really, truly am not. We need more love, less war in the world.
BUT that said - him, with all his "I am the messiah" arrogance, his utter smugness, the hatred he helps spread, the human data he feeds from, all whilst preaching and pretending to be oh so altruistic. Basically all that he represents means I would never tire of watching someone punching him.

Apple going to stop VR/AR development too. It was always a dead-end technology. The kind of people that believe in it also think cryptocurrency is a valid technology.
AR is Great Tech

Seeing furniture in your home you want to "try before you buy" = Great for the GP
Offering online shops a simple way to do that with an even simpler way to buy things with Apple Pay = Great for Apple

AR in car heads up displays = Great Tech
CarPlay working with AR heads up displays = Great for Apple and iPhone owners

Measuring things when you forgot a tape measure (happens to me) = Great Tech

Long story short, don't be cynical. We didn't peak at MS Excel. AR/VR have needs and I think you're just burnt out on seeing all of the massive public fails but one day we're going to look back and be thankful we kept trying...

(dear god let it not be the metaverse though...)

There is.

The lead of the Facebook AR team left after the Frances Haguenes (sp) Congressional testimony.

Without the lead. (prob. the only person who knew what they were doing in that company) left. They shut it down.

The lead of the project then went to Google's version.

So if Facebook had not been such a scum bag of a company. He would prob. still be there.
You're making a lot of assumptions as to the why's.

It seems like after 2016 Facebook became the most hated company in tech.

Hmmmm...🤔

I find it quite entertaining how a man can be so universally hated. He must have done something wrong, I guess.

On the matter: Isn‘t it strange that they would
a) stop a product based on rumored competition
b) stop a product that‘s fundamental to their grand idea they had just announced and changed their name for?
On the other hand, saying „oh, if we can‘t have 100% of the market, we are not interested“ sounds just like them.

I see 'Meta' have started to sponsor things now, I'm sure I saw something in the TV sponsored by them. Probably why they changed their name. Oh joy..
Still not sure if they cancelled their development because of the rumoured Apple VR glasses.

That I'm pretty sure that's a beta version of Data from Star Trek with a surprisingly worse haircut and missing human empathy protocol software.

VR market fizzled is why and not because of Apple VR which will also fizzle. Few hardcore nerds strap giant jockstraps to their head. I'm a major nerd but not hardcore.

I just can’t stomach even looking at that cyborg.

It‘s worse than that. It involves child slaves in poorest countries slaving all day in metaverse games making money for rich people in rich countries. These children will burn out and be replaced and the time they lost playing these games for 1 dollar a day will destroy them psychologically.

These awful crypto VC, hedge fund people and organized criminals are hijacking the games industry for colonialist and elitist purposes to destroy the lives of so many people all around the world. My children, your children, their children will all be disposable to them. Exploit the kids, make them gamblers, take their time and energy, make money out of them, dump them.
Stop mincing words and tell us how you really feel.

They just changed their name to Meta but will no longer own a platform the entire concept is based on. Time to change the company's name back to Facebook I guess. I can think of some choice alternative names as well?
The Facebook branding has become too toxic so I have a feeling that Zuck and his team are already working on a plan to release a new app called Meta or maybe some new name that will the replace Facebook app, maybe even the Instagram app and merge them into one app. Maybe FB will turn into Meta World, Instagram into Meta Lifestyle and messenger into Meta Connect, all part of the same app, possibly even integrating WhatsApp into Meta Connect. They would mostly look similar to the current apps (which would be shut down), but it would just one super app that could possibly become more like WeChat.

Did you even read the article ?

Every time I see a pic of Zuckerface, it really strikes me that even being a billionaire won't fill you with confidence if the way you made your money was by being a slimy worm. He looks like a broken man to me, even though he is super highly successful financially. Everywhere he goes, he must receive nothing but bad vibes, or fake b*tt licking. And that would destroy any man's inner being.

He is the worst of them, but I see various shades of the same from Bezos, all of Google's leaders and founders, and even Tim Cook.

Do good, and you will be filled with confidence and satisfaction. Do evil, and you will suffer. That is the true power of Karma. Karma doesn't take evil people's money from them, it takes their soul from them.

Meta has stopped developing its scratch-built operating system for augmented-reality (AR) and virtual-reality (VR) devices, according to The Information.

In a paywalled report published earlier today, The Information claims that Meta stopped the development of its operating system designed for Oculus virtual-reality devices and the company's upcoming augmented-reality glasses in November 2021, citing people familiar with the matter. Work on the operating system had reportedly been underway since 2017 and involved more than 300 Meta employees.

Existing Oculus devices, such as the Quest 2, run a modified version of Android called VROS, but Meta was designing a new OS from scratch to support its ambitions in the AR and VR space, a project known internally as "XROS." It is unclear why the project was abandoned, but the company could still revive aspects of the OS at a later date.

Going forward, Meta will focus on modifying an open-source version of Android for AR and VR use, rather than using its own in-house OS. The move is expected to save the company money and engineering resources, but ties Meta's AR and VR aspirations closely to Google in the long term.

The decision appears to be a considerable setback for Meta's long-term goal to be more independent and develop its own hardware. In particular, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been concerned for over a decade about the level of control that Apple and Google have over devices that are key to Meta's business model, leading to events such as Facebook's public relations battle with Apple over App Tracking Transparency.

Meanwhile, Apple is believed to be continuing work on "rOS," the operating system designed to run on the company's long-rumored mixed-reality headset and augmented-reality glasses. Apple is expected to become a major player in the "metaverse" with the launch of a mixed-reality headset as soon as this year, rivaling Meta.

rOS has reportedly been in development since at least 2017. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, rOS is based on iOS, and includes Siri and gesture controls. It features basic applications and an App Store, as well as technologies for accomodating virtual meeting rooms and 360-degree video.

Apple already has a strong foothold in AR technologies with ARKit, which provides developers with tools to create augmented reality apps for iPhones and iPads, and the company frequently adds new AR-based features to its devices such as AR walking directions in the Maps app and the LiDAR scanner on the iPad Pro.

Multiple reputable sources believe that Apple's headset will be announced before the end of this year, with the project now said to be "approaching liftoff."

who else ISN'T excited for this?
I just don't feel the giddyness that I used to get when we see tech previews in consumer tech shows. The metaverse just feels so nerdy and stupid to me. I want tech to enhance my life, not replace it. The phone is getting bad enough already. I don't feel happier in social media, I feel less happy.

I don't know. Maybe I'm getting old.

Some vital talent probably left and because of Meta’s deteriorating reputation and work environment, looking for new talent and the right talent had become much more difficult.

Ugh...the marketing folks and the tech reporters have a new toy word...'metaverse'. And they repeat and 'report' on it and talk about it like it's..well, like it is anything. Nothing to see here, literally and figuratively.
It really feels like sometime last year out of the blue “metaverse” and “NFTs” appeared fully formed and all the marketing and tech reporters processed to talk about them as if they’ve been talked about for years. It would probably be easy it pinpoint an exact date when “metaverse” became a forced meme.

rOS is actually a fantastic name. I hope it sticks. Reality OS. Plus it doesn’t pigeonhole themselves in the future if they want both VR and AR. They’ll just do different flavors, like how for a while iPads ran iOS. I say bring it on!!
