Non-starter in any case. Even with removing the requirement for a facebook account, they still require a meta account, and not a fan of using things from a company that's primary business model is to exploit and monetize user data.

I'm skeptical of the AR/VR use case, especially at a rumored $2000 price point. But then again I was skeptical of the original iPad (actually returned one because I didn't see the use), and now use it every day. Jury's out, but probably not an early adopter - will need to see a compelling use case.

With the pending recession, we are going into a weird period. Tech companies are just gonna jack up the price on so many of their products and release watered products just cut cost and squeeze out as much profits. I am not gonna deny the elephant in the room, but Apple is basically doing it with the iPhone 14. I just hope quality doesn't get compromised over the next 2 years just to keep shareholders happy. Looks like, the best way for the consumer to win is take a wait and see approach.
I’m glad I’ve recently updated all my technology so I can sit out buying new stuff for a couple years (save for my Apple Watch that’s 3 years old to me).

So they are not selling as much as expected, and need money desperately. But it seems that they are shooting their own foot, as raising the price may discourage new people from buying it.

Facebook needs money desperately? Maybe they’re recouping the billions Mark lost from Apple keeping Apple customer data away from him.

Also Facebook renamed themselves “Meta” so idiots could think they own/invented the metaverse.
A true Samsung move. 👏

Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough. They surely have a lot of money, but if they allocate funds to their different projects, those not producing enough money may get dumped. Hence, they (the project team) may be desperate for money.

This just proves that Meta has an unfair monopoly gatekeeper status on the hardware they created! If there were other companies that were able to sell the Quest 2, they would have had more competition in the Meta Quest 2 market which would have prevented them from raising the prices.

Let me guess: greedflation
It's been estimated that the BOM for the Quest 2 is pretty close to the retail price. Component costs have gone up globally for a variety of reasons, and FB may have been at risk of losing money on each unit without a price bump.

Just a heads up, Meta has been bricking Q2 headsets when they perform reviews and look for bogus accounts.
Thanks! I’ve heard about that so while it’s a bogus account that’s not in anyway tied to my actual account (that I only have for buying car parts from overseas because that’s the best place to find used car parts ironically), it does have my real info and Facebook even made me perform some garbage stuff to confirm I was real.

So it’s bogus in that I created it solely for the Quest 2, but it’s still a real account. I’ll delete it and create a strictly Meta account once that’s an option.

Although, (rhetorically asking), will that *really* be any better?

Indeed this price hike for basically 1y+ old hardware is really odd.
Nonetheless, the Quest 2 is a really good device to start into VR world. I bought mine last Christmas, had many fun hours with it so it's certainly worth the price.
Will be interesting to see at what price point and what feature set exactly Apple will introduce once they dive into this market. I am not a big fan of Facebook/Meta, but the Quest is a really solid product and they certainly set a good benchmark for VR glasses.

That’s funny, most VR fans were expecting a Quest 3 at this point, the Quest 2 had its run.it’s dated and NEEDS an upgrade, yet FB increased the price of this ageing device 100 bucks?!! 😂

Nintendo and everyone else to Facebook:
You’re doing it wrong. 🤦‍♂️

It's a great product, but this is pretty shocking and it's less attractive at this price. But what's the alternative? Who has a competitive product in this class?

Great opportunity for HTC, HP and many others. It could be that people will pay more for a product with fewer features, but I'd be pretty surprised. There is no reason to believe that Meta can manufacture a competitive consumer tech product, and this seems to be confirmation that they can't.

I'm not sure what their forecast was but sales seem decent. IDC estimated that nearly 15 million were sold during the first 20 months on the market.

The costs to make and ship Quest 2 VR headsets have increased, which is why Meta is raising its prices. The extra funds will allow Meta to invest in "groundbreaking research and new product development."

So are they raising the price because of cost or are they just wanting more money, because those statements contradict each other. 🤦‍♂️🤨

Just got mine a couple weeks ago when I learned you’d be able to just use a Meta account starting in August. Been tinkering around with it with a bogus Facebook account and it’s actually been really cool, especially for 3D modeling and linking to my PC for gaming.

What great timing! I was very on the fence for $300, I would have passed at $400.
- Mark’s alt account lol

Did Zuck need a new plane?

Wow, ballsy move. How many of those sets have they ever sold?

🤔

A few here and there.
