I think this was inevitable. The device is selling pretty much at cost, with meta anticipating that the business model would build an income through apps and services being sold through it. Meta really don't have the services they envisioned, and no one really wants to pay for the apps - especially VR Gamers that find what you can do with the Quest being sub-par compared to PCVR - and additionally being a sub-par PCVR experience when you cable it to your PC.
Roll on Apple's goggles!

I've had the original since launch. Is there anything notably different in version two?

1 make cool VR headset
2 over night make it 100% facebook log in (well scrwe you customers) also for existing customers.
3 raises price for all

TBH i don't care about the price, but the Facebook login, is a 100% no go for me.

Yea no, it's definitely 100% greed. Seriously how do you not see that?

Smart companies take hits to get people to buy into an ecosystem. Console manufacturers have been doing it for ages.

Yeah, it's called 'profit taking'. Sales will stall and things will melt down. I mean who is going to line up to pay a hundred dollars for something that cost a hundred dollars yesterday? 'I OVERPAID FOR THESE! I'M SO SMART! I SHOULD BE PRESIDENT!'

So much different

For starters the Quest 2 is on a much different chipset. Quest 2 uses a Snapdragon XR2 while Quest 1 used a Snapdragon 835. Quest 1 games aren't made anymore since the hardware in the Quest 1 is incredibly dated.

Secondly, Quest 2 has hand tracking to use the headset without controllers on compatible apps.

Thirdly the resolution. Quest 2 is 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, while its predecessor comes out at 1440 x 1600 pixels per eye.

Just the chipbump alone is a notable difference.

I mean I despise Facebook and Meta in general, so I wouldn’t go that far.

I just don’t see enough of a use of VR for me to justify $600+ on a VR headset just to try out a few games on my PC (I have three that support VR, come to find out)

Not trying to sell anyone anything, and I sorely wish Facebook never bought Occulus, but what can you do…

I'm not sure what their forecast was but sales seem decent. IDC estimated that nearly 15 million were sold during the first 20 months on the market.
Which is honestly a lot better than I expected for such a relatively niche product. The (horribly marketed) WiiU - a dedicated Nintendo console that everyone recognizes and knows as a brand - had a much better selection of games than the Quest does and only sold what, 11 million or so over its whole life cycle?

Great opportunity for HTC, HP and many others. It could be that people will pay more for a product with fewer features, but I'd be pretty surprised. There is no reason to believe that Meta can manufacture a competitive consumer tech product, and this seems to be confirmation that they can't.
At some point in the past I read Meta is selling the Quest basically at a loss (not sure if true though). The saying was they want to reach a certain install base of X devices for network effects to kick in and ultimately push their services with that.
This is a strategy that certainly makes more sense for Meta than HTC and HP, who are purely hardware companies. While Meta wants to kick off their idea of the Metaverse and is/was willing to subsidize the hardware.

Zuck needs more money for his latest wet fart idea?

Not a good move. Sales might take a hit.
No they won't. Even with the price hike the Quest 2 is still the best value out of any VR headset since it's still the cheapest and since it's standalone with an exclusive library of games and apps.

Will it stay that way? Most likely no since ByteDance is set to launch their next gen standalone headset the Pico Neo 4 into the US next year, priced the same as the Quest. Not to mention Playstation VR2 is releasing next year as well, and if that headset has PC compatibility then a lot of people will flock to that.

HTC Vive Focus 3 is the Quest 2 alternative... No FB Required.

Now you will need a Meta account. It’s not Facebook. It’s Meta. 🤔

A Meta account is just a store account just like how you need a Steam account to use Steam, or a PSN account to use a Playstation. The issue people had with the Facebook account requirement was having to tie their headset to a social media account, an account chances are they don't have anymore that they deleted years ago. I had to reopen my old Facebook account and leave it blank just to use my headset. If you got banned in Facebook, your Quest 2 and all the games you bought became useless. That's what people's issue with the requirement was, so the change to Meta account has everyone satisfied...and now they just raised the price lmao

It's a good headset, but the forced tie-in to Facebook was a deal breaker for me, no thanks. I sold my Quest 1 and never bothered to get another headset. The VR world is not fully baked, between having to have a heavy, bulky, hot headset that makes it hard to participate with others locally, and the state of games which are mostly just short tech demos. I don't think VR will ever take off until the headsets are much more comfortable, and devs are willing to put their efforts into VR games.

This makes me a bit scared of the next iPhone pricing. Meta is (supposedly) making money on the massive amounts of data...but adding $100 to the price of a $299, 2 year old product is a huge jump. In a way...I wonder if they are trying to unload the old stock of Quest 2's to scalpers then drop a Quest 3. Price increase pre-announced, scalpers buy up in anticipation of being able to grab a quick profit, and then Meta wins since most people who wanted one, already bought one by now.
Kinda hard to unload to scalpers when the thing is easy to get through regular channels.

Facebook parent company Meta today announced that it is raising the price of its Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headsets by $100, making the 128GB version $400 and the 256GB version $500. The price change is set to go into effect on August 1.

Meta is adding no new features to the Quest 2 to justify the price increase, and the company says that it is adjusting the price in order to "continue investing in moving the VR industry forward for the long term."The costs to make and ship Quest 2 VR headsets have increased, which is why Meta is raising its prices. The extra funds will allow Meta to invest in "groundbreaking research and new product development." One such product is a new high-end headset called Project Cambria, which will presumably compete with Apple's own rumored AR/VR headset that's set to come out in 2023.

Apple is expected to charge upwards of $2000 for its headset, so it is not a device that's going to be on par with the Quest VR, and will instead compete with much higher-end devices when it launches.

Meta says that it plans to increase the prices for Meta Quest 2 accessories and refurbished units too, but to soften the price hike, every new headset purchase will include VR game Beat Saber for free. Meta claims that even with the pricing changes, the Meta Quest 2 is "the most affordable VR headset with a comparable feature set on the market," and it will "keep getting better after you buy."

Shouldn’t this be free considering facebook’s entire business model?
