I love how Zuck thinks he's some giant tech genius. He got lucky with a product and is now trying to sell an ad/microtransaction riddled version of a hell that countless cyberpunk novels, sci-fi authors, and computer scientists predicted long before.

No thanks Facebook, no one wants your Metaverse.

It’s not overstaying it to say that social
media, and FB especially, have irreversibly changed the world for the worse.
Yeah, social media was supposed to bring us all together? The algorithms have successfully brought the nerds, the jocks, the lgbtq, the homophobes, the feminists, the misogynists, the racists, the progressives, the conservatives, the socialists, the nazis, the pedofiles and the flatearthers an addictive echo chamber to interact and feel 100% validated in their world view without having to ever socially engage an opposing viewpoint if they don't want too. Who would have thought? /s

I think question of open or closed source isn’t the most important one, the bigger philosophical question is what Meta is trying to make of the virtual reality and what Apple is.

Meta’s vision is disturbing to say the least. I think Apple wants to create AR/VR more as an addition to reality, not virtual world separate from reality for people to be voluntarily imprisoned in.
The difference is that Apple has real products that serve tangible purposes that people want/need and therefore have value. Meta offers the world advertising and bulls#!%.

Apple is not desperate to keep aimlessly throwing crap into a hole they named "metaverse" trying to find something that sticks in order to remain relevant and make money. They can afford to make something that ties into their ecosystem, that people actually stand a chance to enjoy and possibly be productive with. Zuck just needs the lowest budget shiny object possible that attracts the masses so he can sell ads that literally burn into their retinas. He's desperate.

I am too old for all this Metaverse stuff. I dont get it. Why would i want to "walk" into a virtual "supermarket" instead of just chilling on my couch and click the "buy now" button on a webpage in front of me OR go to an actual store!

From what I have seen, the graphics also look pretty crap. Randomly saw a clip of some "virtual concert" of a KPop Group and it was super glitchy and badly rendered (is that a word?)

Or this, it is giving me Nintendo 64 vibes:

Totally agree. This stuff is going to bomb and hard just like 3D TVs did a decade ago.

I'm sure there will be some gamers who love it, like they do now, but outside of that market I can't see there being much interest.

That's right Mark.....keep spending all the profits on the metaverse....in fact take out a few billions in loans for it while you are at it. Let's insure total destruction of you and your company. Then the world will be a much better place.

Is it just coincidence that Zuckerberg’s metaverse came just months after Spielberg’s “Ready Player One”

I can see it being very successful and Spielberg suing for all the profits. 😂😆🤣
it was a book first.

You are joking (maybe), but dumb phones have had a record year in sales ever since the smartphones took over.
Maybe so. However, the word "dumb" does not mean stupid, it means unable to speak.
And "smart" does not mean intelligent or clever.
So this is an example of American "metaverse" being imposed on the entire world.

Nobody wants a meta verse with zuckerberg and his crypto fascist blood drinking VCs having control us.

They couldn’t even get a 2D webpage social media right without hurting the lives of billions of people.

They just want to profit from pain and surveillance and manipulation.

They underestimate what it will look like when millions of protestors had enough of the damage And they come knocking on the front door or making holes in yachts.

Were not plays, books, music, radio, movies, television, preludes to "metaverse"? They are all temporary distractions to the real-world. Technology fosters new approaches to entertainment and learning.

I remember a time when escape into plays, books, movies didn’t involve a fascist org using cookies to track your behavior, spy on your messages, try to up sell you pyramid scheme dreams or manipulate your views so you become xenophobic, a lting grifter and a full time scammer.

You know what did that to people?

Facebook and Twitter did that. Crypto casino did that. Religious fundie VCs who invested in these did that to us.

Your don’t let criminals strike twice.

When I read that Meta is in a "very deep, philosophical competition" with Apple, I wonder if they even know what philosophy is, let alone deep thinking... Will we remember Apple and Meta and this discussion about Metaverse in two hundred years like we could remember Kant today ?

Reminds me of the home stuff on the ps3

Wasn’t massively impressed with that and not massively impressed with this

Prefer a thing called real reality …
