Is it just coincidence that Zuckerberg’s metaverse came just months after Spielberg’s “Ready Player One”

I can see it being very successful and Spielberg suing for all the profits. 😂😆🤣
I hope you are aware that the horribly mediocre movie (being generous) was based on a terribly mediocre book (being extremely generous).

That's right Mark.....keep spending all the profits on the metaverse....in fact take out a few billions in loans for it while you are at it. Let's insure total destruction of you and your company. Then the world will be a much better place.
That move is called a "Musk", isn't it?

From what I have seen, the graphics also look pretty crap. Randomly saw a clip of some "virtual concert" of a KPop Group and it was super glitchy and badly rendered (is that a word?)

Or this, it is giving me Nintendo 64 vibes:

Think about it this way, PS1 graphics were crap compared to PS5 graphics but we all got immersed in, and enjoyed playing, its games.

Meta is in a "very deep, philosophical competition" with Apple over the future of technology and the metaverse, the social network's CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees in an internal meeting last month, reported by The Verge.

tim-cook-mark-zuckerberg.jpg

It's no secret Meta and Apple have been competitors for several years, with the rivalry ramping up in recent years over privacy and the different approaches to user tracking. The competition is expected to heat up as both companies take seemingly different approaches to the "metaverse" and AR/VR. While Meta has begun its journey into the "metaverse," revealing its vision for the future of the internet and releasing accompanying VR headsets, Apple has yet to make a big entrance into the AR/VR space.

That is all set to change, however, as Apple is nearing the launch of its first AR/VR headset for early next year. Responding to a question from an employee over how Apple's launch of an AR/VR headset could impact Meta's plan, Zuckerberg responded by saying it's "pretty clear that Apple is going to be a competitor for us." Zuckerberg continued, saying the competition will go beyond simply offering the best AR/VR hardware and will also play out "philosophically."
This is a competition of "ideas," Zuckerberg went on to claim in the June 30 meeting. Apple believes in "doing everything themselves and tightly integrating that to build a better consumer experience," he said. On the other hand, Meta sees the need for a "larger ecosystem to exist."

Zuckerberg admits, however, that it's unclear whether a "closed ecosystem," which he claims Apple to have, or an open ecosystem from Meta, would be better suited for the metaverse.
Zuckerberg said that Meta's north star should be, and is, whether it will be able to get over a billion people into the metaverse, shopping and spending hundreds of dollars in digital commerce.
Wrapping up his response to the question, Zuckerberg summed up Meta's competition with Apple as going beyond simply the metaverse but also the future of the internet as a whole.

Zuckerberg is now a philosopher? I was thought philosophy was the art of coming up with better questions, not better answers. So, other than, “how do I make more money” what’s his question?

Before Zuckerberg came along I was a perfectly content man, enjoying my life and not experiencing any kind of FOMO. Nothing has been the same since 2007 for me.
Before Facebook arrived, there was MySpace. I took one look at MySpace and said no. I did the same with Facebook and said 'Hell No!'. Since then I have avoided all the so called social media platforms and TBH, not regretted it for even a minute.
More and more of my friends are ditching Facebook, WhatsApp, etc, and going cold-turkey on social media. Most have gotten rid of the Zuck Virus and are now immune from infection.
As for the battle with Apple over VR/AR, so far I have not seen anything that makes either of them irresistible or essential. That makes it for the moment, IMHO, a battle of the nerds.

The thing is Apple and Facebook aren't even competitors. One is a hardware company with software and services on top. The other is a pure internet social networking company (Facebook with feed, instagram for pictures and copying others (tik tok, Snap) and Whatsapp/Messenger for messaging in EU/Asia and US).
Facebook's services run on top of Apple, not in competition with.
Exactly, I stopped reading after the first line. Competitors in what category exactly??

I hope you are aware that the horribly mediocre movie (being generous) was based on a terribly mediocre book (being extremely generous).
I really enjoyed the book and the movie was entertaining even though it was emotionally hallow in comparison to the source material

And by “very deep philosophical competition” I assume he means they’re not interested in it at all.

"Meta is in a 'very deep, philosophical competition' with Apple..."

Only in your tiny little mind, Mark. Only in your mind.
I'm thinking the only reason that Zuckerberg is constantly mentioning Apple is because that's the only way that he can "try" to continue building his business at the astronomical levels that it currently is.... The reality is that Facebook/Meta, or whatever you call it nowadays (lol) is not NEARLY on the same level as Apple because again (as said above by another user), Apple is a hardware and software company, while Facebook/Meta is simply social media. Yes, Meta is a giant in social media, but it is still not at the same level as Apple by leaps and bounds because it does not have hardware on the same scale as Apple....

Sadly, he'll keep imagining that in his mind, as he has the privilege/right to do so just like anyone else. But, I do also think that as Apple continues to get larger in the business space, Meta will continue to decline, as people are more interested in a virtual reality that is "in addition to" reality instead of a purely virtual reality space that is detached from reality.... A Terminator view (LOL), where you see reality, but have the data sitting within the visor (and minus the red undertones; LOL) could be much more appealing to the public than a completely virtual space, that is, UNLESS you are using that specifically toward the construction, landscape architecture, and architecture industries....

This is nothing more than one big game of the SIM’s - and will quickly be allowed to turn into a money making scam from many different entities, and by then, will be way ahead of any laws or regulations that may come to protect the gullible fools who are too weak minded to recognize this for what it really is… Thats the problem with a lot of technology… the innovation happens so fast that by the time its recognized as being used for parasitical reasons, instead of healthy beneficial to all reasons… its moved on and past the laws and regulations it really needed from the beginning. Until we have technology minded people that understand tech in an in depth way, that has good intentions for all, and can craft legislation and regulation before any new innovation is adopted into practice, then we are going to be screwed, because the dark, greedy, and exploitive types will commandeer these new innovations and ruin and corrupt them before they even have a chance to mature… the stuff Zuckerberg producing being a prime example… where he convinces people the conveniences his products provide to you are worth you foregoing your rights to constitutionally given privacy and freedoms… by way of example, where law enforcement agencies do end runs around the constitutional laws by first creating a shady business to capture personal data such as an developer of apps, and then purchasing (using tax payer money) that same data they are forbidden to gather without probable cause and warrants… - and they are doing so unimpeded by our lawmakers who are too clueless about technologies to craft laws that deter such practices by the immoral law and intelligence operations around this country…

So meta (whatever it ends up being called) will be nothing more than just a continuation of what we have out there now… maybe just a little more concentrated and certainly more scammy being run and operated using the old tried and true tested FOMO and loot box phycological manipulation methods… its all sick stuff when you boil it all down, and it’s being created and used to control you and everything around you… Remember the forewarning coming from the elites involved in the World Economic Forum. Their goal is that “You will own nothing and be happy about it” - the key word being “You” - not meaning them!

Metaverse is just a new way of saying Tron, The Matrix, Second Life, VR or whatever new paint color they've come up with since before The Lawnmower Man or Hackers. It didn't take off then, it won't take off now, technology finally being capable or not.

The Colossal Cave remake will find out the hard way that only a niche number of players have the tech and the rest of the planet either doesn't care or doesn't know enough about it to pump up the sales into the Acceptable Zone.

When was the last time your OS even had a 3D desktop? Never-ish? In 2022? It's like the sci-fi serials of the 1950's promising us jetpacks, hovercars, ray guns, and 7-course meals in a pill by the 1980's.

Dr. Theopolis won't hold his breath and neither should you.

Wow. At least he's being refreshingly transparent. Openly admitting that the entire point is to replace their ad business and get people spending money. He already helped ruin the internet, now he wants to take it to the next level.

Metaverse, NFTs, blockchain, Web 3.0... nobody has any idea how these things will even work, but everybody seems to be too afraid to be late to the party, like they were with Bitcoin. It's the tech companies' FOMO and they all try to drag us into it.
How's that Bitcoin party now?

I hate Facebook/Meta and how they keep on babbling about this vr game riddled with microtransactions and NFTs they call the "metaverse"
True,
Why would ANYONE trust the ZUCK when he publicly called Facebook adopters "Dumb ****s"?

More like Facebook is aware of how much control Apple wields over their ecosystem and could make the former's business model crumble with a mere snap of their fingers.

“This is a competition of ideas”.

If he really said that… wow. Let that sink in for a moment. Z views the metaverse as the next existential battleground. Spoiler alert: when faced with death, desperate, evil men will do desperate, evil things to survive.

Facebook thrived by fostering the worst elements of humanity within its users: self-comparison, vanity, manipulation, fear of missing out, shaming… and the list goes on. Now Z tips his hand and admits that “the next thing” is a philosophical (and dare I say religious) competition?
Let the reader understand - they plan to bring all of this and more to their new alternate reality. You’ve been warned.

And that is exactly the “target audience” they are after to kick start this new concept off… they want the gullible ones who thought BitCoin and all its variations and offshoots, was some sort of valid investment. The only ones who make it a true investment are the ones who work hard to recruit the next “greater fool” every day To offload “their investment“ to.

Same deal, just a different name… and the saddest part is the media is fully a part of the recruitment efforts. Back in our countries founders days, the press was a watchdog for the people… a respected institution that identified abuse of power and corruption within or branches of Gov’t… it’s nothing like that now… and is willingly become part of the corruption schemes where they actively help disseminate propaganda designed to lead you away from the truth.
