Is there actually any competition? I mean, really? Just because you call yourself 'Meta' doesn't mean you have a clue of what that means. Zuck is so out of his league.

I remember moving to a new town and when out with the real estate agent looking at prospective homes, we passed a sign proudly declaring that 'the' international airport was to the left. I said 'Oh, an international airport? Awesome!'. The agent replied, without even turning around, 'Just because they call it that doesn't make it so'. Now I know why. It's an 'entry airport', meaning that there is a customs agent there during normal operating hours. I've heard you usually have to wake them up, but privateers use small 'entry airports' to avoid the delays at the 'biggies', where the delays can be impressive. That, and that alone makes it an 'international airport', and nothing more. Oh... It only has 2 'flag carriers', and none of them fly outside of the US from that little airport. *sigh*

And that is exactly the “target audience” they are after to kick start this new concept off… they want the gullible ones who thought BitCoin and all its variations and offshoots, was some sort of valid investment. The only ones who make it a true investment are the ones who work hard to recruit the next “greater fool” every day To offload “their investment“ to.

Same deal, just a different name… and the saddest part is the media is fully a part of the recruitment efforts. Back in our countries founders days, the press was a watchdog for the people… a respected institution that identified abuse of power and corruption within or branches of Gov’t… it’s nothing like that now… and is willingly become part of the corruption schemes where they actively help disseminate propaganda designed to lead you away from the truth.

'The media' likes shiny things. In politics, in society, in the arts, they will focus with laser like precision on shiny things. Most in 'the media' are clueless (think UK newscaster) and tend to support things they are told to, or likely paid to..

'Meta (the word)' is a shiny thing. It's been around for quite a long time. And Zuck thinks he's a player in it? Maybe a bit player? (Hopefully)

'Meta' sounds like a grift. No wonder it seems to attract so many grifters.

I hate Facebook/Meta and how they keep on babbling about this vr game riddled with microtransactions and NFTs they call the "metaverse"
"Game" is the keyword here for me.

-There are plenty of actual games out now that give you the experience of meeting and playing together with other people online in a virtual space, some compatible with VR headsets and some not.

But the reason that games like those are popular is because they have well-tested games to play, games that most know about directly or indirectly, that are fun to play together with others.

Zuckerberg's Metaverse sort of looks like an unpolished version of those games yet it lacks great games.

And all of the things that Metaverse does have are available with better user experiences in apps for mobile and desktop.

Like, why would you want to play with an educational app through a VR headset if you can just play something equivalent directly on your tablet or laptop?

Furthermore, the whole "walking around as an avatar and interacting with other people wearing a VR headset" has been done in multiple other games/experiences, like VRChat and Second Life.

I'm also pretty sure the lure of socialising in VR goes away once corporations, employers, and politicians join and your avatar is linked to your real life person, which seems to be one of Zuck's goals for Metaverse.

It seems like Zuck's problem is he has to 'own' things, and he thinks Meta (the toad) 'OWNS' the Metaverse. To me it seems like the joke about the flea 'owning' the dog. Yeah, no... With his narcissism, and urge to 'own' things, he will end up road kill as others DO leverage the idea of the metaverse to greater higher levels.

I think it's pretty clear that Apple is going to be a competitor for us, not just as a product but philosophically. We're approaching this in an open way and trying to build a more open ecosystem. We're trying to make more stuff interoperable with Android. We're trying to develop the metaverse in a way where you can bring your virtual goods from one world to another. We created the Metaverse Open Standards Group with a bunch of other folks that you just mentioned, and Apple didn't join.
Pshahahaha! By open, Facebook mostly means “using our tools, connecting to our servers, hosting our experiences, and we’re the payment gateway, too”. Facebook can talk about how “open” it is, but, in reality, they’re about as open as the App Store. Personally, I think, even if XR has legs, the Metaverse idea doesn’t. The future of XR is going to be app-like experiences available through an App Store and not VR cyber chat.

I only see Metaverse becoming what Zuck wants it to be if the visuals and overall VR experience jumps leagues ahead of the competition, to the point where it really feels like stepping into another world, or at the very least on par with the latest and most advanced video games.

I cant wait to sit in my stacked mobile home in Columbus playing stupid ass games as I live in filth.

So says the genius who's been Putin's number one john since 2015 and gunning for "four more years".

Apple wins while "Meta" gets broken up into tiny little pieces VERY soon after November.

Imagine wanting to build the next "big thing" and having your entire ambition being a digital/VR shopping mall for a billion people.

I think at least on some level, the people at Apple believe that you can create devices that make people's lives better. You can connect them to the people they care about, you can help them with their own human frailties, and you can materially improve their lives.

I can't imagine that anything good is going to come from Zuckerberg and his guiding North Star of "we want to get a billion people spending hundreds of dollars in the metaverse within the decade"

Well, after the NFT Ponzi scheme becomes obvious o the average Joe, and more and more of it just vanishes, I'd say that the whole NFT Metaverse is toast before it even started, which means that FB – ehm Meta – will soon shrink to an appropriate size.

Not to mention that I haven't found a single person yet who'd been interested to spend time in this vast, dull and boring virtual space.

Having AR glasses to extend reality still is a niche application, but at least one where I can imagine applications I'd like to use.

Just like the media seems to be a huge proponent of Twitter and report everything through the lense of a twitter account… but has anyone ever wondered why that is? Would it be the equity “investors“ in Twitter are paying huge sums to the media conglomerates for advertising? I don’t use twitter, and never have, and i don’t know anyone who uses it either… it seems to be used excusivly for those who celebrity status, or media types who want their voices to echo everywhere they are… Twitter is a joke, and one big misrepresentation of how many people actually use it…

Ahh, but 'the media' runs like a virtual Twitter. They can't spend large amounts of time covering shiny objects, so all we get is the 'Twitterization' of the story, often ignoring the nuances and, well, reality. And even at that often get small, and large, details dead wrong. Oh, and are more than susceptible to intimidation, and pressure to report things a certain way. One time, a wastrel spawn of a powerful local politician nearly single-handedly tore down a small grocery store at 2AM. All of the media reports were saying, confidently, that drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash. Local physicians in the ER said the kid was high as a kite, and drunk enough to have major surgery. He 'didn't feel a thing' when his car hit the store. *shrug* Just like Twitter? Controversy, and getting it wrong?

Ah, the Zuckwit speaks.

A year ago, Meta traded around $375. Now it trades at less than half that.

A year ago, Apple traded around $150. Now it trades around $150.

Meta announces its Q2 earnings today, and expectations aren't great, to put it mildly.

And, to top it off, Tim Cook actually has eyebrows.

I’m so sick of this metaverse talk. It’s nothing new or groundbreaking. Second Life, MMOs and more have existed for a very very VERY long time.

The thing is Apple and Facebook aren't even competitors. One is a hardware company with software and services on top. The other is a pure internet social networking company (Facebook with feed, instagram for pictures and copying others (tik tok, Snap) and Whatsapp/Messenger for messaging in EU/Asia and US).
Facebook's services run on top of Apple, not in competition with.

Like Google, Microsoft and Samsung, Facebook wants to be Apple.

I remember a time when escape into plays, books, movies didn’t involve a fascist org using cookies to track your behavior, spy on your messages, try to up sell you pyramid scheme dreams or manipulate your views so you become xenophobic, a lting grifter and a full time scammer.

You know what did that to people?

Facebook and Twitter did that. Crypto casino did that. Religious fundie VCs who invested in these did that to us.

Your don’t let criminals strike twice.
Pre-internet literature, news, movies, comic books, etc were/are a form of propaganda, marketing and scamming (commercials). It has just found a new venue (metaverse)upon which to persuade people to surrender their assets to others based upon illusionary promises. Marketing/propaganda is a very powerful tool used in commerce, politics, and religion. All of it is used to accumulate power.
