it is a strange situation i guess, given that meta are willing to abide by the laws for their instagram users and facebook users but not threads users.
I think, in this case, they do plan to eventually have it available in the EU, it’s just that the regulatory structure the EU puts in place means that’s going to take months, at LEAST, so why delay the launch when those in the EU that REALLY want it can get it anyway? I don’t think any company is going to close up shop in the EU (except EU based tech companies :), but there’s definitely going to be an added consideration before releasing anything NEW in the EU). Like, if out of the 400+ million, only 2 million would ever have the money/interest to buy a $3499 headset, why even release it in the EU and go through the regulatory headache when one can likely find that 2 million outside the EU? (Out of the 8 billion in the world, one would be limited to marketing to only slightly fewer than that.

Simply put, users can't "tweet" on threads. Therefore threads will not succeed. Fundamental brand issue. Unless Meta colludes with the government to ban Twitter, they cannot win this battle.

Facebook already has all my info, and needless to say the interwebz also, so when it comes to privacy it's whatever.

I saw the app, and followed a couple of people I follow on Twitter, definitely easier to use. I have read all over the place that Mastodon is difficult to use. It is not.

Will this be a Twitter Killer? Can't tell. It seems easier to use, and dunno how toxic is the Instagram crowd. To me they are all the same, and for the amount of use I'll give it, I think it will do fine.

That high school is going to be well known and have a great resume then....because the app is on 70 million phones already. 👏👏👏👏
are you implying 70mil ppl downloaded because of how great the logo is? it looks like garbage

I’m implying that whether it looks like garbage or not is irrelevant. It’s a graphic and subjective. Doesn’t change the fact that 70 million people have seen it and will be seeing it every time they interact with the app. That’s a win for the graphic designer regardless of whether people like or dislike his logo.

Well except the only app/device that has had an issue like this is threads. Even though their parent company didn’t have a problem with their other apps.

Google has delayed their AI chatbot and Apple’s delayed the Vision Pro. And, even while they may eventually come out, the fact of the delay still remains.

Im sorry who said apple had delayed their vision pro because of the eu lawsuit on data protection ?

That’s the real danger… You can see just by reading through this thread that which social media people are using or intend to use is based on the perception of ideology of the people who own it. So you eventually end up with a bunch of echo chambers. It’s already occurred in regular media, Some people get their news from msnbc or cnn and others get it from fox and newsmax…. It’s not even about slant anymore, these networks don’t even report the same stories. … so anyway… just find it sad, any social media with out diversity of thought and opinions turns people in to sheep.
It's unfortunate that one side wants to censor the other sides voice, so what you end up with is separate platforms and every one is an echo chamber. People feel like others should not be allowed to have a different opinion or at least not allowed to express it publicly so it's kind of sad. It's the same with news that it's just become opinion commentary by some talking head. When I was younger that used to be called an editorial or op ed but now it's just regular "news". I'm not aware of any news publication that doesn't push a political agenda or align with a political party. If I could get news without a long spiel about what the talking head thinks, that would be awesome but maybe boring because it would be very brief and to the point

To everyone declaring this a "privacy nightmare" maybe exercise your ability to control what an app gets and what it doesn't. I have it installed and have disallowed access to anything. Gee, that was way less fun than complaining online.
That’s not how they track you. The will use your fb, ig, and now threads to sniff your data, build a profile of your personality and sell that data to advertisers or worse to target you. You’re a commodity. A plant. An object to monetize.

Of course!! They wouldn't be there if they had no way to make money. Nothing is free and you have to give something to get something. That's the capitalist way, and I don't think that's bad. It does no harm to me and I get the benefit of their services.

Yeah, they can track you across their site. That's a given. And if you're on an Apple platform, the browser and app sandboxing does a lot to interrupt their ability to do that beyond their sites.

The things I was responding to were people saying the app wants access to everything on your phone, all your personal data and your Apple account. That's not true and iOS allows you to control what an app can access anyway so it's under your control.

Does anyone else find it suspicious how fast Threads has grown? 100 million users in less than a week is an astronomical number for a new platform...an unbelievable number.

I feel like Threads might be fudging some numbers by auto creating Threads accounts from Instagram accounts.

Oh well, we all know in the end that a platform isn't successful just from numbers, but also for if the users stay on it...which I don't think will happen.

When Threads launched, there were over 2 BILLION monthly active Instagram users. Given how curious people are, how widely the news has been communicated (and how easy the setup is), 5% of 2 billion users in less than a week isn’t unbelievable , it’s a “gimmie”.

Ok, but most social medias DON'T grow that quickly so fast. Usually it takes months or years for that many users to sign up. Instagram itself took about two and a half years to get to the 100 million user mark and Twitter took 5 years to get to 100 millions active users.

Even with easy set up, it just seems a little suspicious to me that ANY platform could gain that many users like it's nothing.

On a totally unrelated note, remember when that social media, IRL, cooked their books on how many users they had by creating fake accounts in order to get more money from investors, which led to their downfall.
