Meta's VR Headset Can Play iPhone Spatial Videos

I think the only desperate one is Apple. Meta quest sells a lot more and costs seven times less, in addition to have wider field of view and being lighter and having an integrated battery. In practice it puts Vision Pro to shame.
Apple is doom they been out sold by a product that been on the market of years.

Edit: I can't wait to come back in 10 years and laugh at these type of comments.

There are already several iOS apps for that. Convert & watch spatial videos on 3D TVs & other headsets:

I wonder what other Vision Pro features would be available in Quest 2/3.

Any feature they dont have to pay for. Features won't be supported are those that require advanced sensors (eye control), or computational gymnastics (gesture control), or support of on board apps (duh), or high resolution multiple windows. In short, those that think they can get a AVP on the cheap, are going to either be in denial or disappointed.

EDIT. speaking of disappointed, I assume the video will have to be downscaled to fit down into the Quest lower resolution.

Not going to happen. People are already playing spatial videos on Meta hardware. It's not a proprietary file format. Apps already exist to convert the spatial video files into other formats and load them on other devices.

so.. just to be clear, sure you can convert it to run on other devices, but to get the 3d effect it has to be a device with separate outputs to each eye, and if you want the same high resolution you have to have the same high resolutions specs on your device, which few alternatives do. so yeah. you can get something, just wont be as good as what you get on the AVP.

If I don't care about the Vision Pro all that much in its current state, I care way less about any headset made by Facebook.

But isn’t “spatial video” really DoblyVision with a different name? And isn’t “spatial audio” really Dobly Atmos?
No. DolbyVision is a flavor of HDR. It just has to do with color and brightness profiles within the scene. Spatial Video is about depth and dimension. Dolby Atmos is a form of object-based audio though.

Do you need to use both to know which one is heavier and has an external battery, which one costs seven times more, which one has a narrower field of view? These are all very well known facts one can confirm by visiting the official websites or reading one of many reviews available.
Lets only look things I don't like and ignore the all parts that are better on the AVP. And I still question the FOV seeing how only one review talked about and he seems to have never used a headset before.

Yes, Crackberry and Nokia were absolutely killing iPhone sales before it launched too. Now where's Crackberry?

oh golly I am all for facts, do we need to use to know which one has the far superior image resolution, which one has the better latency, which one isn't made from cheap plastic, which one doesnt require special controllers, but uses gestures, which one does a much better job of eye control, which one is stand alone and doesnt required being paired to something else? These are all very well known facts too! Weee!

If someone will make an app to convert Spatial Video to Viewmaster discs, we can spin how Viewmaster puts both "to shame" by being many multiples cheaper than both, has sold a lot more units than Meta Quest, is lighter than both, and doesn't require a battery at all. 🎉🎉🎉

And yes, I'm sure it too will deliver the exact same quality of experience, along with the utility of all of the other features one can enjoy with Vpro beyond spatial home movies.

Go ViewMaster!!!

Not long before Apple tries to stop this. It will be like Beeper all over again.

There is also the possibility that they allow this just to popularise the idea hoping that people will buy their expensive devices when they get money, just like many Android users do. However, I don't think the current Apple leadership have such vision and care about much beyond money.
I think you need a better analogy than Beeper.

Beeper literally created a messaging client that leveraged another company's servers to support it. It was not a messaging service, but simply a messaging client for an existing service that exploited security holes to register unauthorized clients.

If people want to message securely between Android and iPhone there are a host of apps that have their own server-side components for doing that.... WhatsApp and Signal to name two.

Uploading a spatial video you took on your iPhone to a Meta cloud service through the Meta Quest app will not leverage anything that belongs to Apple. Apple is not going to do anything about this except maybe enjoy a few more people upgrading to iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max who already own a Meta Quest because now they have a reason to upgrade.

I am sure the quality of spatial videos on Meta Quest is going to be degraded versus Vision Pro because the resolution of the Meta Quest screen is not as high, but it will still be nice for those who own an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and a Meta Quest.

I am kinda regretting selling the Meta Quest that Nissan sent me for free as an apology gift for the delay on my pre-order for the Nissan Ariya. I never ended up buying the Ariya, but I thought it was a nice gift that they sent.

Meta quest is the worst device Ive ever own. Biggest blocker is is a Meta propietary, you need a Meta account, wich is the worst company at client support. is just non existing.
Would love to see how google enters here and makes Meta bite the dust.

Wow, a service requiring an account. Shocking. You don't need a Facebook account, just a simple email/password style Meta account.
