I can imagine this is frustrating for many people. Every standard pc you buy around here has W8 on it, like it or not.
Though having it in the metro-interface isn't really a necessity, since I believe you can also make tiles for non-metro apps which launch in the desktop interface.

Selling 100,000,000 copies to companies/pc builders is one thing. Getting these 100,000,000 windows 8 inside people's houses and lives is another totally different thing...

How many years does it take Apple to get 100 million Macs "inside people's houses and lives"? 5? More?

However, the report also note that Apple is unlikely to fulfill Microsoft's request because "there's no reason for Apple to help make the Surface a better product."

I'm sure Microsoft will remember this with regard to Office for iOS. And speaking of other companies making competitor's products better, if I were Balmer I'd dump Office for the OSX platform altogether.

LOL! The arrogance of Apple these days.

Reliable rumors suggest the metro interface can be disabled in an upcoming Win8 release.

Dear Tami...

Please stop haggling with Apple over their cut and release Office for iOS already so that those of us that have to support iOS tablets in the enterprise can already get on with it. I'm sure Apple will be more than willing to release iTunes for Win 8 Pro afterwards. It's called "co-operation" and it only works if BOTH parties are involved.

Thanks,
-K

People actually use Windows 8?

Yes, my design software such as Solid Edge, Pro E and 3DS Max Design does not work on the Mac...

And no, for the time being Bootcamp or Parallels are not an option for me :(

Quite right that Apple have to MS that it's bloody stupid to have two versions of every program.

Which nutter thought it would be such a great idea to have TWO versions of Internet Explorer on everybody's computer, one of which looks like the Duplo version?

"People use Windows 8?"

Yes, Windows 8 has about 7% of the tablet market. It also has ~4% of the desktop market.

So, yes, people are using Windows 8.

Oh, also I don't think this is going to help Microsoft release Office for iOS anytime soon.

You haven't used many versions of Windows have you? ;)
Every single one. Just like with OS X.

Btw, anyone see the local IT rags raving about how "Apple is behind Microsoft" because Apple wasn't stupid enough to do the suicidal move of merging their tablet and desktop operating system together like what Microsoft has done with Windows 8? I really have to ask how the heck some of these so-called journalists get their job because I almost vomited in my mouth hearing someone defend such a horrible decision by Microsoft to merge two different devices operating systems into one then explain away claiming that a touch screen is useful of a desktop..

It works very well for me. Especially on my HP. The removable screen means the laptop can also be a tablet. When I have it as a tablet, I use metro apps. When I have it as a laptop, I use desktop apps. Very simple. Plus, the OS is snappy as hell, very quick on boot up and loading times. I'm not offended by an OS that has two clearly distinguishable interfaces.

Feel free to vomit in your mouth. The only reason I bothered defending Windows 8 on this website and thread is so I get to imagine posters like you doing so.

I use it. Best Windows OS I have ever used. People just need to get over the change and actually learn how it works. It is then, you realise it is probably one of the best OSs around.

That doesn't mean it doesn't need improvements though. Some things are questionable but they should be cleaned up in Windows 8.1.

Lol. I feel bad for you. :)

Whereas with the iPad, where you're given only the 'Duplo option' and nothing else.

The change is MS making a platform to pump you and your computer with advertising through the Metro interface. All those live tiles are going to be sold as billboards. You're forced to go there to be exposed to it so they can guarantee your exposure to their clients to get advertising money. Win 8 is a big pile of poo and should be rejected by everyone.

Ha! Shoe on other foot...

"there's no reason for Apple to help make the Surface a better product."

Hmmm, seems I remember a similar sentiment existing in the 1990s that went like this:

"there's no reason for [Microsoft] to help make the [Macintosh] a better product."

At least that's why Office sucked on the Mac for so long, and still does. I guess you reap what you sow.

It probably went like this:

Balmer to Cook: "You need to bring iTunes to the Windows 8 Metro"

Cook to Ballmer: "Ok, but only if you bring office to the iPad"

Ballmer to the Press: "Apple has no interest in bringing iTunes to Windows 8 (Metro)"

The app already runs on windows 8, it just doesn't include the "tile" thing. I don't see why apple would bother since users can just run the existing version.

I really don't understand what is so "hard" about Windows 8

I don't see any complaints in this thread that it's "hard". It's just annoying and cumbersome, and people generally prefer the desktop on a PC. Once 8.1 ships and lets people turn off the tiles, this will be even less of an issue for Apple.

I like it as well but you are wasting your efforts here. Most just bash windows for sport without having any sort of clue. I will admit that 8 on the desktop is a bit awkward, there should be a desktop mode that restores a start menu and hides Metro. Oh wait you can with ClassicShell :D
