So before everyone goes off on an "OMG ZUNE SUX LOLZ!!!!" tirade, have you actually used a Zune before? Or are you just saying that stuff because Microsoft makes them?

I've never used a Zune, so I'll reserve judgement until I've at least touched one. And you should too, because you don't like it when Windows fanboys go "OMG MAC SUX0RS!!!!" when they've never used one

I have used a Zune before....and it felt like my 3rd gen click wheel iPod. Except it was heavier and thicker than my out of date iPod. Maybe it just felt that way, I haven't compared specs, but it wasn't a good feel. The screen is nice and some of the features might be good. Unfortunately, the "coolest" feature they offer, wifi sharing or "squirting" is basically useless since it requires someone else to actually have a Zune. Plus, not only do you have to find someone with a Zune close to you, you have to go ask them to share their music with you. You don't just get to swap music unknowingly.

I don't mind talking to people, I am not that anti-social. But it just adds to the inconvenience of that "feature".

I might consider a Zune if I could use it with Windows Media Player 11 instead of having to learn a whole new program. The marketplace point system is strange and bizarre- but I always buy CDs anyway.

On another note... If I hear the word SUXORS one more time- I'm gonna scream and pull my hair out. :p

Why? What says that anything red has to be Product(RED)?

Their pink one isn't for breast cancer awareness or the Susan Komen foundation either, should they be clobbered for that too?

Yeah....I agree. How about a product that supports causes closer to home. I am not saying product red isn't important. But NO AMOUNT OF MONEY thrown at Africa is going to solve the problems there.

Sorry, I will take this post somewhere else, don't want to get all political in here! :)

Or you could get something like this:

Click.jpg

8 GB, plays all formats, FM tuner, 25 H battery life. Wide touch screen devices are not per se an Apple invention.....

Looks alright I guess, why not make it smaller instead of having all that empty space on the edges???

It's an iRiver (ehhh, yes, the i again...) Clix2 8 GB. My link would lead you to a Dutch website, which is useless to you if you can't read Dutch.

Screen is about .2 inches bigger than the nano, but it's $30-40 more for the same sizes. I don't know if that's worth paying that much extra for.

The multitouch UI, however, has never been done before. Touchscreens (and worse, styluses) have been around forever--just not done well. Flick-scrolling, pinch scrolling, etc.--not to mention having the iPhone/iPod Touch's really LARGE screen in a very THIN device, are unprecedented.

Note--the device you show doesn't compare well to an iPod Touch: it's more like the new Nano. It has a 2.2" screen, barely larger than a nano, but the front surface size is larger than a Nano too. And it's twice as thick as a Nano (old or new).

Yet the nano, with half the physical size and almost the same screen, gets similar battery life (24 hours vs. 25) and costs $40 less.

EDIT: Amusing quote from Kruser on that page, about how nanos must be more easily breakable since they lack the Clix's comforting bulk :D

"I used a 1stGen nano a couple weeks ago and i was totally sickened by the size of it. It's way too small... I've dropped my Clix before(very scary), and it's fine. I can't see dropping a nano at all without something going wrong. I'm so glad i have a Clix. Apple dictates how much I dislike their products, and i think that's all they can do."

Oh, I'm sorry. I'm already regretting I even mentioned it. Is EVERYTING here compared to, or must compete with, or must live up to Apple standards? Perhaps I tried to show that instead of a Zune there are zillions of other devices.

Well, yes, on an Apple forum, EVERYTHING will be compared to Apple standards. Don't take offense :) (You're the one that brought up Apple in comparison to the Clix.)

Your contribution is welcome, and the device you link does have a limited form of touch UI, which I do think is cool in a small device. I would get one over a Zune :)

If this is an Apple forum, why 99.999999% of the threads are about Microsoft? (Just kidding but you catch my drift I hope :)).

Are you asking me? I dunno know. It fits in the palm of your hand, so it's small enough. And I think it looks more than 'alright' :D

No I think "Alright" sums it up pretty good. It is thicker, heavier and bigger than a Nano. Some of the features are good if it was 10 years ago, like FM radio.

I would of said in April when this came out that it was great, now that the new Nano is out though, not so much.

Plus, great marketing by iRiver since I have never even heard about this product until it was mentioned in this forum....now 6 months since its release!?!? Way to capture the market while when you actually had a chance.

Your in the "Mac Rumors Forum", what exactly did you expect? Apple's stranglehold on the MP3 market is such that someone needs to come up with something that blows it away, not just adds a nice feature or two.

Yes, everything you bring up here WILL be compared to an Apple product. If you didn't think that, your in the wrong place my friend. The Zune2 came out, now we get to compare. Thats what we do.

I do think though that some competition is welcomed. Apple needs to be challenged more. Right now they are competing with themselves, they need someone to step up and force them to get movin!

meet zune soon?

WOW. the zune site is very unproductive. you click "meet zune" and you don't even get to see the "nano" version. instead it asks you what color 30 gig you want and then tells you where to get them. Is it me or does their site look like a 7th grader did it in iweb lol. :D microsoft is macrolame

If the Zune was compatible with OS X, then I would definitely get one over the iPod classic/nano. People keep saying the zune sucks, but you know what? My iPods suck. They lock up all the time, they lag like hell when switching songs, and the user interface isn't as nice.

No, this has nothing to do with anything you mentioned of course. Every MP3 player manufacturer has come out with a v2, v3, v4, etc. version but that's not the point here. Neither is it of any importance that umptious manufacturers copied the click wheel concept somehow.

It is up to me if I'm in the right place or not.

I’m a great admirer of Apple’s industrial design. Being able to attract great designers and making the right decisions at the right time is Jobs’s biggest feat. I find it literally mind-boggling why almost none of the other large electronics manufacturers are seemingly unable to do the same. Bang & Olufssen are among those who could do this. Sony, perhaps. But they don’t. Or can't get hold of the right 'vibe'.

Me, I’m dreaming of a Krell or Burmester or Linn MP3 player. They would probably look agricultural or at best 1930’s. But ohhhhhh, the sound quality….. Because that is what I miss in this discussion, isn’t an MP3 player made to listen to music? Probably not, I’ll crawl back to my cave now.

And who are ‘we’, oh member with equal post count?

i dont think you get it.... the zune is competing with the classic, not touch

Because it is or because you say it is? Assuming it is not doing so because it is more similar to the classic is ridiculous. There is no reason one couldn't compare it to the Touch. Hell I could compare it to chocolate if I want. The question is, does that comparison offer any insight? Hell yeah it does, in the case of Zune vs. Touch, not chocolate vs. Zune. You wouldn't say the iMac isn't competing with everyday PC desktops simply because it is in a different class would you?

The new Zunes look sleeker, yet still uninteresting. The color choices aren't that great, either. The green ones look like digested vegetables. :/

Oh well. Better luck next time?

The green ones look like digested vegetables. :/

With each new generation, Microsoft's vegetable colors are becoming less digested. From a completely-digested waste product in generation 1, to partially-digested waste in generation 2. Generation 3 will feature a slightly-foamy half-chewed sort of green, and generation 4's green will be crisp and fresh.

well, at least they're better than the first generation zunes... i'm happy with my iPod classic, thank you very much. :D

You'd think the new zune could at least have a wireless movie store with all that extra weight and stuff...

Wow, the response in this MacRumors thread is SOOO shocking

I own a Nano 2G, iPod 5G 30GB and an iPhone 8GB but even I don't bash something until I've tried it.

Some of you people on here are the definition of Apple fanboy, grow up.
