Businesses use windows because IT guys love windows because it is easier to implement on a large scale and control remotely right? And because windows have had the enterprise market locked down for a long time.
So MS Office is most common in business by default, not because it is better or worse.

Word and PowerPoint are trash. Excel is the only useful piece of software, and yes it is much more powerful than Numbers, and I would say a better spreadsheet program than Numbers.
So basically Microsoft have one program they can be proud of, Excel, and it's only marginally better than other programs. What a great software company :/

People keep saying it's inertia, but nobody ever provides proof. It's just one of those things people repeat.

Have you really never heard someone say "I want to have a Mac and hate Office but I'm worried about being compatible with people at work." That's a form of inertia. And studies have shows that Macs are a better value for enterprise in the long run in terms of maintenance and resale value. Why would a business NOT choose to have computers that last longer and are easier to service if not for the inertia of staying with what they already know and already have sales reps for? And the IT department usually has a big say in what computers are bought and since most of them have been trained in Microsoft products, they don't want to have to learn anything else and are fearful of trying. I have MANY clients who simply work on their own Mac and live without IT support because having a Mac is worth it to them. I had a Mac at P&G back in the '90s because I analyzed consumer research data and JMP statistical analysis software was Mac only at the time. The assistant director of Pampers division also had a Mac, don't know how he justified it. The guy who was designing new patterns for printed Bounty also had a Mac (and had one of those monitors you could swivel from landscape to portrait!). This was unique in the '90s and we all had to maintain our own computers. Didn't have any problems.

Dominating?

I think maybe this is an expression of a very dated perspective. Microsoft dominated. It's not dominating.

Those days are as over as Apple's as the plucky underdog.

Hmm, years back that was said about Microsoft. Honestly Microsoft has enjoyed being the giant with their office suite and Windows. Let Apple and Google handle the phone stuff. I'm honestly tired of Microsoft dominating and monopolizing everything over the past few years.

Ah, so being forced to use a tool for your job is inertia. "I want to use X, but I need Y" is simply a way of saying "I need a tool that works for my job". Also, the argument about Macs is pointless because Office is on OS X. Seriously, poor argument.

No. Each company dominates in a certain field. When it comes to enterprise, the desktop, and possibly the cloud if things continue as is, that's MS' field. Mobile? That's all Apple. Though Android beats them on pure marketshare, there isn't a single phone or tablet out there that's as widely regarded or as solidly selling as the iDevice line. Google? Consumer oriented internet services. No one touches them there.

So everyone dominates in something, though no one dominates entirely anymore.

Carpenters would've replaced hammers years ago if it weren't for their inertia.

With what? WHO KNOWS! But I'll tell you this: no one wants to use hammers because they want to.

Microsoft is quite good at making software? Really?

Please cite your proof with references.

Off the top of my head:

Windows
Windows Server
Office inc Visio & Project
IIS
SCOM
SCCM
SQL
Terminal Services
Active Directory
Lync / Skype
SharePoint
Hyper-V
File System services (DFS, DFSR etc)
Visual Studio
Silverlight
Edge/IE
PowerShell

For the record, I'm not saying that I think Microsoft Office is the best product for everyone. I'm just saying that it is the standard in the enterprise.

Me personally, I use Pages, Numbers, and Keynote at home as I feel it integrates better in my personal work flow. I don't like all the nagging about updates and such that Microsoft Office 2011 does on OSX so I don't have it installed.

On my work laptop, Windows and Office all the way.

Obviously it's inertia. I mean, a person might want to use their Lumia to drive the nail in. But no, they have to use a hammer.

Agreed on the first part. There is no best for everyone. But there is still objectively better in terms of software, and that's all I really say.

Exactly! No one uses hammers because they're better. They just use hammers because everyone uses hammers.

And that's why hammers are DOOMED!

Right?

It depends on what you need, really. I agree with the usual consensus that Office is considerably more powerful, but Pages/Numbers is much more streamlined. It's much easier to make something attractive and basically functional in the latter than it is in the former.

You can still do just as much that looks just as nice in Word as you can in Pages, but there's more of a learning cover, and a bit more busywork once you get past it.

DOOOOOMMMMEEEDDDD!

I certainly don't trust Google with my data, and I never trusted Microsoft, so I will stick with Siri. The cortana adverts (UK, the tedious one about dancing) really put me off. I only ever used Siri, but when playing with all of them on nights out with mates, every one of them had issues. None of them was perfect, they all had their uses. Personally my favourite was Siri, but then I have used it for years and know how to ask.

For me, I always enjoyed the more automated approach that Word gives me for my research papers. >_>

Word can really help you be lazy after you learn it.

Well, I'm not really all that good at Word or Excel, so I'm still kinda unaware of the really fancy stuff buried underneath the hood.

I know enough of them both to do something cool, and make it look great. But damn, it takes me forever.

That's the biggest problem with Office, it's a thing that takes no small amount of effort to really learn,

Move over Siri... You have a new assistant. So, being a competitor to Siri, this would mean we can all use Cortana for everything Siri cannot do yet. Same on Android...

Seems, like we like to further prove that "ours" is better than "yours" ...

Its like saying :p

Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Phone 8, Office, Azure are all infinitely better than their Apple counterparts. Windows 10 runs better on a new Mac than the latest version of Mac OS does.

riiiight! thanks for the laugh.

btw, have you noticed how many MS updates get pushed out to your windows machine?

Actually, when my nephew puts up new walls in my basement, he uses a nail gun, not a hammer, lol. I use a hammer for small jobs, like hanging a picture. I recently bought an electric brad nailer because I didn't want to use a hammer to work on my kitchen cabinets. Hammers ARE becoming obsolete.

As opposed to large several hundred megabyte updates that are held off and rolled up? Seriously, no OS is without its large amount of updates. The only difference is how they're distributed.
