Speak and Spell (TI)

I would give this device a try if it didn't run Windows 8. I installed W8 on my computer a couple of weeks ago. I played with it for about 15 minutes and was so frustrated, I just toggled the power switch to off and have not looked back.

And the UI...

They had to try to make it butt ugly. I hope the UI designers don't find themselves looking for a job outside of MS. They will unemployed for a very long time.

Is it just me or is everyone pretty much secretly excited about this. I for one am actually going to be checking it out. Shoot have this thing and an iPad. Woot!

I'm going for computer science. Anyway, I'm going into 11th grade, which some alumni said was the worst year of their life. I can imagine a lot of people with much worse years of their lives, but the amount of pressure is intimidating.

enjoy it while it lasts dude, life only gets hard from here - more stress, more financial problems, more responsibilities.

as much as you think homework sucks or studying for a test is annoying at least once you're done you're done. try having a manager on your @$$ for years.

seriously enjoy it while it lasts. study hard but enjoy the ride. pick a field in high demand like engineering, health care, or software development. my advice, if you are a technical person...don't go into engineering. this country doesn't appreciate engineers like they should. we always get slammed with R&D cuts, we have lower salaries than the Sales group, and we have to work long hours. go into health care and use your high income to do technical hobbies[/QUOTE]

I feel sorry for anyone who buys this tablet. Remember all the red light of death xbox 360's? They are not fighting Sony they are taking on Apple.

The iPad doesn't exactly "dock" with a keyboard, at least it doesn't without having to rely on a shell case to snap your iPad inside. It's not nearly as seamless as the (admittedly rather clever) smartscreen keyboard.

...which is considerably more awkward than having a USB port alongside the unit.

MS uses ARM for their Windows RT tablets. You have the choice between the power of x86, or the longevity of ARM. Not that the sacrifice is all that huge these days. ULV x86 processors can (supposedly and/or allegedly) hit 6-7 hours of battery life under regular usage.

There is an iPad keyboard dock (I think made by Apple) that does not require these steps and is easy to use. Of course, it's useless unless you are at a desk.

The dock connector is not USB exactly. I can see how a USB port would be nice, but the dock connector is good for accessories. I think the iPad could benefit from just one USB port.

I'd choose longevity over power for a tablet. The Intel vs ARM argument is kinda fuzzy anyway unless it is between two processor experts.

Docks with a keyboard - iPad

Has USB - iPad - via the 30 pin connector

Micro SD ill grant you - long overdue

Intel processor - none - because apple values battery life - arm processor!

I haven't seen the iPad keyboard that plugs in and then you close it like a notebook. Who makes it?

Yep, Apple is the master of 29.99 adapters to do the things that everyone does every day.

And there is an ARM version of the Microsoft tablet. But will the Surface multitask? That is an important question.

He is a goofball. You can't deny that or the fact that he looks like a dork in that picture.

Except he's likely intelligent enough to realize his physical appearance doesn't have anything to do with how well his products perform. A concept you have yet to grasp.

I'm a PC user that buys iPhone apps, and have an iPhone and a Mac Mini. Get your elitist attitude away from here.

I agree. That guy makes us Apple customers look like.... oh wait probably nobody here will get this reference.

Wonder if the Intel version will have sufficiently standard PC hardware so that it can run Linux or if Microsoft plans to lock it down using UEFI secure boot. :(

This thing + Linux/FreeBSD would be a nice portable laptop like device.

This was my first thought as well.

And now you should realize they look nothing alike. In case you're confused, having a touch screen doesn't make it an ipad ripoff, because that's about the only thing that's similar... Or perhaps you can tell me which part of it you confused with the ipad? Was it the different size? Different aspect ratio? boxed vs rounded edges? Different material? The magnetic keyboard that ipad doesn't have? Oh wait, that must be it... The magnet right? I'm really curious which one of these striking differences led you to believe its an ipad ripoff? Or are you one of those too stupid to think for himself apple fanboy?

Really? Apple people are kinda known for crazy levels of fanboyism or whatever you want to call it. Isn't there people camping out for iPhones at release?

camping out for something isn't called crazy - it's called smart thing to do when it's gonna be sold out.

If you stood in line for anything Microsoft, you are one of the dumbest people on the planet. It has nothing to do with fanboism. Fanboism is when you have a huge tattoo of a product on your body.

There is a huge stigma with the brand, Microsoft. You don't get that overnight. It culminates from years of frustrations and just plain garbage. bottom line is people will pay hundreds more for a device that perfectly suits their needs at the moment. They don't' rush out and buy a microsoft product that tailors to everyone and does nothing good at all. That's how Microsoft as a company is. They don't innovate - they duplicate and then they do it with such low self-esteem, it's pathetic.

If you don't see the brilliance in an iPad, you will never understand. So I suggest just sticking with PC junk. I'm waiting for the model that has a fan in it because all that heat is gonna burn my hand.

Except that you forgot that the majority of the world uses Windows based computers. And the majority of those people don't own an iPad. There is potential for a huge market. Most of the Windows users don't want to switch to Apple.

This really could be the first Tablet that the Enterprise market might be really interested in. Because its a tablet that actual work could be done on, so far. No decent tablet has been able to do that.

The Windows 8 version looks like something I'll pick up, a Tablet with a keyboard and full on not half assed OS? Please and thank you.

I didn't expect Microsoft to be the company that came out with something like this.

I can't wait for Apple to come out with something similar, then say that Microsoft copied it /s

I also have an old macbook pro. I don't use it though, needs a new battery. What's your point? Am I not good enough for you?

Right. I also have ten pc boxes downstairs that I can't just throw away. I have to find a recycling place to dispose of them.

My point? You know what my point is. People like you will never understand what saving time is and having less things to deal with in life.

Move along...nothing to see here (esp. this w8 junk tablet)

I see lots of fear of Microsoft in this thread. Admit it, you're worried that this tablet might be a hit.

I think it is in name only. Unless I missed something else on the Surface "technology". Microsoft has a portfolio of technology to work with but implementation is another story.

I assumed slapping the moniker on it meant they were extending the brand, using some of the Surface technology within the tablet itself.

And if not then, hey, Surface is as neat a name to go with as any.

Trailer for a horror movie?

I'll admit the video was cool, but I found the flashes and distortions to be very horror-esque. The music was also a little odd (although I suppose it went with the video well enough.)

Great Ad aimed at teenagers, gamers and XBox fans, Transformers style.

I found it kinda cool, but pointless and empty.

Umm, everyone knows that the iPad can dock with an external Bluetooth keyboard right? Brookstones has one built into a case and so do others I believe. You can slip the apple keyboard in your bag if you want as well. And then you have a real keyboard.

But this is clearly what Microsoft had in mind when it developed windows 8. So let's wait for the reviews and check it out. But let's also not forget that apple has keyboards for its iPad. The keyboards aren't a bit deal because you don't need them for a tablet most of th time.

...your life depends on Microsoft and their products whether you like it or not. so instead of pretending like you F''ing know everything there is to know and that Apple is supreme, take a step back and realize there is more in the tech industry than consumer toys

think outside of the box, or evaporate yourself from these forums

I've had a 20 plus year career that is far from over in your bleeping little IT world and believe me, whether I know everything or not (which no one clearly does)...I'll keep on flying with or without your little Redmond bed buddy ;) Trust me...my life doesn't "depend" on MS any more than it depends on Oncor, GM, VW, Johnson and Johnson, and the list goes on and on... Companies come...companies go... Such it will be with MS and lots of other...

You're the one living in the past if you think that MS isn't in trouble...and sorry bud but they're in trouble in more places than just the living room or your front pocket...even inside their holy locale of enterprise...they have a lot of trouble heading their way.
