I thought I would like the Windows 8 UI, but after using it today for about 2 hours I prefer iOS.
When I first fired up Windows 8, I hated it. Thought every new addition was a pain in the ass to work around. The Start menu was crowded, the charms felt spastic, the screen scrolled left to right instead of up and down. It felt like it worked ass backwards compared to...well...everything you've been used to up to this point.
I pretty much panned it right on the spot. The only reason I didn't immediately wipe Win8 off my drive was because I didn't feel like restoring everything back to Windows 7. The desktop still worked well enough, despite all this GOOFY CRAP MS felt like throwing in my face.
Which was kind of a good thing, because...
After a few days, I started getting the feel of it. Learned the ins and outs of Metro, how to organize and categorize the new Start menu, appreciate all the new additions MS added to the desktop, etc, etc, etc. There's all kinds of good stuff in Win8 that's not immediately apparent because you're so shocked after being dunked into the deep end of the Metro pool.
Now, I feel like going back to Windows 7 would be a slight downgrade.
Give it a chance. More than two hours anyway. Metro is so different, it's almost guaranteed to give everyone who tries it a bit of culture shock when you first fire it up. But there are a ton of good reasons MS has forced the switch, and you'll start to realize them the more time you spend in it.
But as I began reading some posters, yea, I don't usually use my iPad on the table. It would be utterly useless.
That's the thing. You won't have to use the Surface on a table, either. If you're sitting on your couch, it'll have an onscreen keyboard, same as the iPad. But if you need a keyboard to type some long winded thesis about the history of African pottery, well hey...there go you. It has a keyboard built into the smartscreen. Flip it out and go to town.
