I'm excited. This opens up a lot of opportunities that neither Apple nor Google have the ability to do right now.

Uh YEAH, since YOU were the one calling me out.

Since the current implementation allows apps to hook into the voice recognition engine, it's actually impossible to list all of the commands it can handle.

Very exotic-sounding name. When I hear 'Cortana', I envision an Amazonian woman wearing leopard skin around her hips with large juicy breasts.

CORRRR-TANA!!

Juicy as in open sores dripping pus?

Hey man, I'm not tripping about what MS's phone lacks or doesn't offer against Apple. I was responding to someone earlier that said congrats to Microsoft for coming out with something "Original" today, and nothing could be further from the truth. That's all.

My response to Roadbloc was sarcasm. I honestly don't care what Windows Phone can do.

I love ironic humour. Oh dear. It wasn't humour was it?

You really think fingerprint seniors are futuristic and ...

Next!

Yeah, very futuristic, just like your reading skills. I said nothing about Apple's fingerprint sensor being futuristic, now did I? I said it performs better than the rest on the market...and from what I currently can see it's only Samsung that has a smartphone with that feature besides Apple.

100% agree and to add to it, had this been Apple who just came out with a personal assistant after MS and Google had one then many in this forum alone would be bashing Apple saying, "Come on Apple, You can't Seem to Innovate, you're late to the game".

Funny how when Microsoft brings out Cortana (that had multiple mess ups this morning) this forum seems to shake the pom poms for MS as if they revolutionized the personal assistant, like it's the first time it's been done.
That's how it goes these days. Look at the Amazon STB. No focus at all on Roku, just Apple TV that's doomed.

That's ridiculous and you just proved my point I made a moment ago.
Ok well I'm not excusing demos that don't work, but I'd rather see an oops and have the presenter remind people it's beta than have a flawless demo that doesn't work out that way in real life. Apple maps is another example. Great demo by Forstall but a product that sucked for a lot of people in real life.

I'm fairly impressed with the potential of Cortana – being a true personal assistant used to be Apple's goal with Siri, though based on the lack of progress towards that since Siri was launched, I can't say I really know what Apple plans for Siri beyond monetizing APIs for third-party services. Siri still has very little in the way of conversational knowledge. But having things like showing your flight status, traffic, text messages related to your trip, all on one screen, that's really the kind of thing I've been hoping for. Wrangling all the details of life into something manageable so that I can focus on more important things.

I also appreciate that Cortana allows third-party app integration -- something Apple has not allowed -- though it's not clear whether these will be cherry-picked apps, or whether anyone can integrate commands into Cortana.

Back in the 90s people started talking about The Information Age, and that the internet would lead to information overload. Those companies that could provide information filters by analyzing the information stream and giving customers only what was relevant to them would be most successful. I think we see the promise of that here. I say promise, because the reality of Cortana may turn out to be very underwhelming.

In the end, will this really help Microsoft much in the mobile space? I doubt it, but I applaud them for trying to push the digital assistant forward.

P.S. - that Verge article read like a giant advertisement.

windows phone 8 is really nice I had a couple of them but many of the features in 8.1 made me return them in the return window as I had the suspicion it would take awhile for the older handsets to get the update. Glad I did because it looks like I was correct. 8.1 seems to address all the complaints I had with 8.0 (no action centre, no swipe keyboard)

I've stopped using Siri it's so bad. Hard to understand why they still can't get it right. Hope it gets major upgrade with iOS 8.

I wasn't calling you out. I was just letting you know Microsoft have had a voice assist solution before Cortana.

And your point was for doing so?

Please answer because I just enjoy your friends thumbing up every post against me. This forum is funny one.

But here's the thing. I live in California which is the same state Apple is from and where their keynote was held. I've only had one glitch with Apple maps after the day it was released. Many people I know that use them out here have never had an issue. The issues came mostly from people that lived outside the U.S or remote places from California. Now, not that it's suppose excuse that but his demos worked like they were suppose to. It's impossible to do a maps demo covering everyone's region of choice.
Did they not mention it was in beta during the WWDC demo?

I have used Siri from the moment it became available, I think it is great. My old phone is set to german now and my 5s to english. I hope that Apple will put their thinking caps on to make sure Siri is the best personal assistant available. In my experience I have never come across anyone who used Google Now, but have come quite a few people who use Siri. I hope the fact that MS has now started trying this now too, will speed up improvements.

Wow, first Microsoft keynote in a long time that was actually interesting in multiple ways. Windows Phone is really starting to look good with the 8.1 update - not to mention that the OS is free to install on 9" screens and below. Now only if the app developers jump in - that should be easier and more attractive with all the developer goodies they released like the universal Windows apps and Visual Studio updates.

Siri will now the third behind Microsoft and Google in the digital personal assistant category - catch up time again! Microsoft and Google can relatively easily open up Cortana and Google Now to developers - Microsoft has the cloud infrastructure and not many developers and Google has both the cloud infrastructure and the experience to scale something like this to handle the many Android and ChromeOS app developers.

Apple is just getting Siri working with their own stuff - to get it wide open to the ton of iOS developers will take significant time.

I just wish they'd get rid of Siri all together. I was probably one of the first people to turn it off on the iphone 4S.

So by default you're also the one to have used it the least and so have no idea of it's uses and capabilities. I use Siri daily, but only when there's no one else around lol

And your point was for doing so?
Look, you were the one who was denying originality on Microsoft's part. I was simply pointing out this is not their first voice recognition assistant.

Late to the Party again!?!?!

Doesn't MicroSoft know that April Fool's day is on April 1st?

Forget Cortana, this is the real news:

If only it wasn't too late. This could have stopped Android 5 years ago. What a pity. :p

I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Microsoft has had it's time of dominance and monopolizing the world. It's good that Apple and Google dominate the mobile media world. People can't have choice if we constantly live in a Microsoft-dominated world.

Which phone is superior? Why, the one that helps you save puppies, of course!

Fingerprint sensors are, not sure about senior. Also let me guess Cortana is so 2014 right?

Cool, I didn't realize Siri could set a timer. (seriously).

Siri can do a lot!
I do things like, wake me up at 6:00 AM.
What's the temperature?
Change my appointment for tomorrow to next monday.
Call my wife. If you haven't set the relationship, Siri asks me who my wife is, then after I tell her, she asks me if she should remember this relationship. That's it. Now she knows who my father-in-law is, who my siblings are, mother, etc.
I also use it for navigation like directions to home, directions to Costco in Orlando, etc.
SHe will even read briefings from Wikipedia about people. For example, I asked her about "Tell me about Gandhi". She looked up Wiki and she offered to read me a summary and I said yes.
