There's a random bug on Microsoft Word 2011 that makes text behave terribly, appearing and disappearing everywhere.

It is now the third service pack and the issue just gets different every time, since 2010, but is never really fixed.

That's a shame, to say the least. And now they want to bash Apple for iWork?

lol

The iWork software is priced as an afterthought, yet every Surface tablet comes with MicroSoft Office for free. Hmmm....

While Frank Shaw (of Microsoft)'s criticisms are not entirely out of merits, the fact is, Surface and its accompanying Office apps provide worse experience than iPad, iWorks, and many wireless keyboard options available.

Furthermore, while iPads are indeed more of a consumption device than productivity, those seeking productivity are far better off with a true notebook than hybrids such as Surface Pro.

Wow. While I want MS to succeed because it benefits all of us, this sounds like immature "tit for tat" whining.

MS would have been better off just saying nothing.

Honestly... simply coming from an enterprise standpoint using exchange, I would rather have a tablet that has full Outlook/Calendar and Office with full SharePoint support... than an iPad with iOS Mail and Cal.

I can see where MS is coming from and what they are trying to prove/do, but they are doing it the wrong way bashing Apple.

Where I work, we are trying to remove all laptops from our field users, and replace them with iPads+BT Keyboards only. I can not wait for that disaster.

I got to say he's right on some remarks. Surface certainly is better for productivity. Apple definitely should address the more professional market with a tablet that kind of molds the iPad and macbook. Sort of like what Microsoft did.

The competition among tablets meant for consuming content is getting extremely rough with Google and Amazon bringing out tablets as loss-leaders. That's really hard to compete with in the long run. Sure, their products might not be on par with Apple's, but they certainly have the capital and business model to make them almost as good. But at a lower price.

Why did he even bother to mention the desktop? It's going away in the next 1-2 windows releases. Even if they make it seem like they get it now, they're about to embark on a more terrifying transition in the next 1-2 years.

Sounds like he's scared....

I've opened a few formatting heavy Word docs in the new Pages and they opened flawlessly.

Same with some formatting heavy Excel docs I've got.

I'm VERY impressed with this new iWork - iWork '09 missed a lot of things and this is a very good start.

MS is scared as every day that goes by without Office on the platforms of choice (iOS and Android), people will realize they don't need Office. And then it's game over for MS.

Unless I'm missing something the Surface doesnt have more storage ? They only come in 64GB and of that only 44GB is usable last I checked?

Office is a great suite. Primarily because it is ubiquitous in homes and work places. However I don't really want to try writing large complicated documents on any tablet. It's possible, but not fun. iwork supports MS formats, and anything is shareable with anyone via iCloud - unless I didn't understand the demo?

Surface isn't a bad product. But its trying to offer the same as a desktop experience, which it can't do.

but wait, if I wanted to be productive and run office I could buy a macbook air, run OSX, Windows, Office etc etc etc with double the battery life of a surface, a better keyboard by a mile, a better trackpad by a light year and really be productive. iPads aren't designed for productivity period. Surface are designed for productivity but do a really bad job compared to a laptop and the macbook air is still the best windows laptop

The one thing I can't argue is that Word still trumps Pages on many levels. Basic word processing, no worries, you can choose either. But every time I launch Pages and want to do something a little more robust, I keep going back to Word.

Truth be told, even Word isn't the best. I'd prefer Frame Maker for professional quality docs creation, but Adobe axed OSX support years ago.

There really isn't a professional level word processing/publishing platform for Mac or iOS, more's the pity.

I keep hoping that Apple will beef up Pages to the point of professional, but no dice.

The consumer will decide!

Unfortunately ( because competition is good ), Surface hasn't done too well so far, and Surface 2 hasn't gotten great reviews.

Cheaper, faster and more storage isn't always what the consumer wants.

If microsoft had the current public image that Apple has, Surface may be doing a whole lot better.

cheaper and expandable storage, ok fairplay

no apps and has to run some WinMobile variant, barf puke, NO thanks!

do the Surfi have Retina displays? didnt think so...

Oh Dear

Seems like Microsoft are jealous, because the Surface isn't selling and that the iPad is the dominant tablet as it has the most responsive touch screen and powerful A7 processor.

And the fact windows 8 is the spawn of satan and every person i spoke to regarding it say they hate it and that it costs over £100. Marvericks is awesome and its free end of story!

WHY? if you need productivity get a macbook, if you need entertainment and super mobility get an iPad. It's that simple.

I've seen one person use a surface in the past year or so, and that was last week. Can't count the number of iPads that I've seen...

I'm not sure if i've ever seen 1 Surface. The iPad is fine for productivity if you choose to use it as such.

I believe the Surface exists for one reason only - to try to keep Office relevant. That's why they keep pushing how great it is that you can use Office wherever you go. Nevermind that everyone's wooed by Apple ads that keep pushing how great it is to watch movies and show off photos of your good-looking family everywhere you go.
