All the people complaint about iWork are idiots. History shows Apple resets and then adds features back to major software lines...

Yes, we should just expect Apple to wreck their software every time they change a lot of things. All companies do. I remember how Office 2007, when they made huge changes to the UI, they just wrecked Office. They removed some of the huge features, they added them back in updates though.

Wait, no, that didn't happen.

Why do people let Apple get away with things they wouldn't let any other company get away with?

If you don't like it go buy Microsoft Office 365. No one is defending Apple here just pointing out that only a fool loses their mind over this stuff when it's so obviously part of how they work.

So, people are not allowed to complain about it? Seriously, if we don't complain they'll never change. And they should change.

The only people who complain when they have other choices are:

1. Idiots
2. People who don't know they have a choice

Only group two can complain and not look an utter idiot.

Or people who have used the product for years, got used to how it works, and still want to use it. Not all of us are foam-at-the-mouth Apple supporters. And that's just what you're being right now. You say you're not giving Apple a pass, but you're basically telling everyone who is complaining about their decision to "shut up or you're an idiot". That is very much defending Apple and their decision to neuter their product.

Wake up. Stop blindly following.

Microsoft is CORRECT.

The guys at Microsoft are dead-on correct. Have you seen what Apple did too "Pages" I was expecting a good upgrade from the '09 product but Apple went and dumbed it down and removed many features.

This not iWork is a gift to Microsoft. Many iWork users are going to be forced to by Office. MS is right Apple absolutely does not understand office productivity software. Apple's basic OS is good but they had FOUR years to improved Pages and they blewit, they made it less good.

Apple does seem to understand entertainment and making fun products. But has no clue about doing real work.

Pages is the Ford Pinto of word processors

Yes, of course I'll buy MS Office. Pages is now a joke. But why would Apple purposely create a product that most of their users don't want. Especially when it drives them to go to a competitor.

It's like saying there is nothing wrong with an old Ford Pinto because there are other cars you can buy. Apple has in effect created a "pinto" and defends it only by says "buy a Honda Civic"

The funny thing is that I was looking forward to this update. I was looking forward to the point where Office was going to get usurped, or at least have viable competition. I was looking forward to the UI refresh. Then I saw it, it's definitely not what I expected.

This is what I meant. I was hoping to be rid of MS Office.

I really hope this iPhone goes away. I'd like to see Apple get back to putting the resource in Macs and Mac OS X. Apple had FOUR YEARS to work on this Pages release and they back slide rather than moved forward.

Maybe within a year, they'll have worked on everything and made it to where it works right. I'm going to try to work with the new one until then, just so I can get used to the UI. I really want competition for Office. This isn't because I hate Office, I find it to still be the standard, but competition helps all.

I'm an idiot then......

If you can't trust a company not to damage your workflow in such a bad way, guess what, you look for another company.

This is simple software that people use for business/hobby/lifestyle critical tasks.

It could do a good job of page layout, in fact I have a few magazines out there using it. I know many people using it for newsletters, business documents and more general use. Many of these things are either harder to do or impossible with the new software.

This is NOT like FCPX, this isn't a different way of working, with a few not so common things removed, this is a popular mainstream productivity tool, that is no longer productive.

You letter writers are ok, but most of us are left high and dry.

So...

a. wait till apple add function to this castrated software or..
b. find something else.

As Apple can't be trusted to not do this over and over again it has implications for other software, I think I may have to look at Lightroom and Capture One for my photo editing in the future as well... Maybe get a PC instead of a Mac as I'd no longer be tied to a platform

So, basically this is the halo effect in reverse...

I think that's his solution taken to an extreme, sadly.

I think a lot people who are complaining are misunderstanding Apple's goals. Do you really think Apple expects or intends its $20 (now free) product to compete with a $100+/year software suite? Pages exists for the people (like me) who need to write simple documents and like to be able to access them simply on all their Apple products. If you need to do more than that, sorry, Pages isn't for you, and complaining about it isn't going to make it become what you want it to be. That just doesn't seem to be what Apple is going for, and Apple does what Apple wants.

i thought textedit was for that.

its free in the sense that its subsidized by the premium you pay for apple computers.

go to apples pages website and tell me thats how they are promoting it. that kinda seems to conflict with apples goals which you are privy to.

Actually I do. The feature set reduction was not even across all applications - Pages took the biggest hit - reason for this is the refactoring of the code base in Cocoa in 64 bit to translate equally across OSX, Browser, and iOS could not accommodate those features. The reason Apple is lowering cost to free is to diminish the transition costs when iWork does approach feature compatability with MS Office. When that happens - it is available to all owners of iPads (people who may not own a Mac as well as Mac owners. When these Apple users see it has the same feature set they are looking for in MS Office - they can effectively beta test iWork side by side with MS Office. Unlike Office 365 whose Cloud and Mobile feature set is severely diminished from the desktop versions - iWork will be equal across the board.

By effectively eliminating the transition cost (both financial and accessibility through different platforms - OS X, iOS, and Browser) - it lays the trojan horse.

Hence the MS reaction.

Good for you! Someone with a working brain unlike the idiot above who thinks that people having choice equals erosion of his little ideal world dream.

Apple decided to bring it into the mobile revolution and make it for the masses. Now there's a clear choice between MS version of office docs and Apple. You can choose either that suites your need. Only a fool can't see that and expects one to be the other.

Are you sure?

By forcing me to change to Office they are actually laying a MS trojan horse in my work.

As a matter of fact we must replace some aging macs in our office. I'm pretty biased now for hackintosh PCs, not Macs. We will use Pages 09 as long as we can, but If I'll must change to Office it will be to the original windows.

Maybe Apple is going first to lost some macs sales and later some mac users

Apple's software strategy is to commoditize it to appeal to the common denominator. Doing that fuels hardware sales, which is all they really care about

Their strategy explains everything from the cheap price of apps on the app store, to what they did with FCX, to Jobs considering ditching the Pro market, to making OSX and iWork free. Dumbing down Pages falls right in line with this

Yeah, you are right. Most companies will give you the hardware for free and make it back on the software or consumables. Apple is the opposite because they are the sole producer of hardware that runs their stuff. So, they give you the software as long as you buy their very expensive hardware. Same model, just swapped roles.

There really isn't any comparison between office and iWork. One is more professional and one is geared towards the casual user.

Oh you should be able to complain about it and do. While I see this upgrade as a clean sheet refactoring - I did make some not in the feedback website at Apple saying they better start transitioning in these features.

Every company has shortcomings - this is one of Apple's. They obviously figures that getting consistency across the board was more important than getting every last feature in.

As someone said - until Apple gets those features back up and running - there is always Office 365. And Office 2011 for Mac is not bad.

That is always possible. I will not disagree. It depends on how quickly they provide rolling updates for features. However, if Google is an example of this model - that could be fairly quick. Any strategy has its strengths and weaknesses.

It's a matter of opinion, nothing proves it.

Sales prove it.

Sales show not just "market penetration". Markets can be penetrated, but consumers don't want it, so they don't buy it.

iPad has both. "Here it is" and "Yes we want it".

That's proof enough. Buyers determine the proof.

Officer for Mac would cost me money, and it doesn't sync with iCloud. And if I wanted to just use Office, I have a Surface RT for that.

So, basically, all you want is all the advantages of Apple without all the disadvantages. I wonder why nobody thought of that.
