What a sad pathetic yet completely predictable reaction from the cult of apple. When apple sues someone over patents they are just defending themselves. As soon as anyone else sues over a patent they are evil, or trolling or just trying to extort money.

Your comparison between Microsoft and apple is garbage to say the least. Apple has not made anything close resembling Microsoft in fact they have made " better" more well designed devices. I'm not saying Apple has a reason to SUE. But what I am addressing are apple haters total disregard the facts put forward. This is not about Apple suing Microsoft. This is about a guy who has clearly nothing better to do then to start suing everyone in sight. Don't support his cause.

tl;dr

just wanted to be one of many saying, "baaaah! Another bleeding patent troll."

Mr. Allen would be better off spending his time & money funding those projects of his in Seattle. Especially the concept of building micro-cities for genetic engineering & research. I'm sure he'll find more return on his dollars in that field than blowing $$ on lawyers & years of court room drama.

this is just a total ********ng waste of the time of courts everywhere.

edit: grrrr...this makes me even more irate, as I consider that this company of his existed last century! So much has changed in tech. that those patents he holds from way back then could only vaguely resemble current implementations of those ideas.

- United States Patent No. 6,034,652 issued for an invention entitled "Attention Manager for Occupying the Peripheral Attention of a Person in the Vicinity of a Display Device."
- United States Patent No. 6,788,314 issued for an invention entitled "Attention Manager for Occupying the Peripheral Attention of a Person in the Vicinity of a Display Device."

Indeed, these patents were filed by Interval Research when the commercial web was still in its infancy. Two date back to 1996, before Google even existed and while Steve Jobs was still in exile from Apple. Interval accuses a long list of giant tech companies of infringing U.S. Patent 6,263,507, which was filed on December 5, 1996, and issued on July 17, 2001. AOL, Apple, Google, and Yahoo are accused of infringing U.S. Patent 6,034,652, which was filed on March 22, 1996, and issued March 7, 2000. According to the complaint (PDF), Google was publicly acknowledging Interval’s technical and financial contributions in documents dated 1998.

"Attention Manager for Occupying the Peripheral Attention of a Person in the Vicinity of a Display Device." - I don't understand. What was the goal for this patent? To be annoying with a ring tone and a flash light.

Sure sounds like it. He was able to get it patented, though, which is pretty interesting.

ROFL!

Did he patent this before or after the drawer full of cassette tapes was invented.

Intellectual Ventures has amassed more than 20,000 patents through invention, acquisition and partnering with universities. It states on its Web site that, "While litigation is possible in any business, it is not a goal of IV."

Gates, Mundie, Flake and others are listed as inventors on patent applications filed by Intellectual Ventures affiliate Searete LLC, covering concepts such as determining behavioral influences on Internet users by gauging their interaction with others.

Allen has also helped generate a number of ideas included in Intellectual Ventures patent applications, according to public filings. The Microsoft co-founder has contributed to concepts including methods of seamlessly transferring calls among different devices, according to the filings.

To be fair to Microsoft. Paul Allen has nothing to do with MS anymore. He does own a lot of shares but doesn't do anything with MS.

This is NOT Microsoft suing anybody. It's Paul Allen.

Yet he's not suing Microsoft (Bing). Coincidence?

Apple patent anything they can get their hands on, they all do.

Let them sue the **** out of each other so that someone will finally take notice and finally change these stupid laws.

Hmmm, browsed them, don't see much of a difference.

But, good luck to all parties involved :D

You don't see a difference between using patents defensively and in a patent counter suit versus using your overly vague patents to troll for anyone willing to settle out of court? Don't quit your day job.

He created PORN!

Troll indeed!

I wouldn't have a problem if Mr. Allen filed the lawsuit decades ago. After all these years only now? This makes you think that he just going after for the money. This patent protection should become void when the claim is been copied/develop after 2-3 years in public market. Come on for a company like Apple it's not hard to miss when they copied your intellectual property after it's been out of the market for even a year. Troll indeed!

As The MS Empire Expires

These ex-MS guys just keep ruining whatever legacy and reputation MS has left.

Of all of them I only liked Gates.......

Patent Expiration

For just how long are these patents good? Maybe he's doing a "hail mary" to get whatever he can out of something about to disappear.

Sigh

Me thinx allen has gone down hill. One wonders when the US will give these software patents a rest. I'm not a US citizen, and I'm amazed how the US continues to hurt it's own economy be these patents. It's not like China gives a ******.

You're right, but why are you bashing Microsoft?? They're not the one who is suing, it's Paul Allen. So once again why bash MS??
