It may sell to a few people, and it may have some plusses that the iPod Touch doesn't yet have (like the radio and the easy-to-hook-to-TV-thing), but one thing will make this gadget a disaster:

No iTunes application store.

competition is always a good thing. radio + oled = ahead of ipod touch. I don't see why you would rate this negative just because you love apple to death

Let's see:

OLED screen = terrific :D
Zune = terrific fail :D

As someone who once owned the original white 30GB Zune in his dark days as a PC user, I feel qualified to make that claim. Sure, a portable device with an OLED screen is cool, but an iPod touch killer? Lolwut?

. . . ahead of last year's iPod Touch, and this thing isn't even out yet. Before we compare it to the iPod Touch in regard to the screen, let's wait to see what changes are made to the iPod Touch for this year's model. Of course, I will concede the radio as I doubt Apple will add one.

Wow, you guys sound incredibly bias. It doesn't look half bad. It sounds like ya'll don't like anything that tries to compete with the iPod. I prefer iPod myself, but ya'll are so mean about it. XP

By the Fall, I'm assuming Apple will have a few surprises of their own for the next iPod Touch revision. They're fully aware of what MS is up to with this upcoming Zune Touch thing and I'm sure they will focus on key features that they feel will be most important and useful. Competition is certainly a good thing here so looking forward to how Apple will match this which I'm sure they're capable of doing.

the touch tech will be terrible i have yet to find a non apple device that actually has decent touch tech

"This is enough work for us this year,"

That would be a lot of work - using someone else's ideas and trying to figure out how to make them original so you don't get sued - that's enough work for them this year!
:apple:FTW

Mean? This is a Mac site, expect some bias.:p

Beside, MS pretty much is copying Apple, as they normally due. Can't beat em, copy them (or at least attempt it)....

I do like the fact that the Zune has a radio though. This is one thing Apple needs in iPods (it would be so cheap to do so). Maybe the Zune will gives Apple a little push in that direction.

Bring on the competition!

From hardware, to operating system, to web browser, to overall user experience I expect this to be a step behind the iPod Touch.

Still, the expanded feature set puts this in the running to be a legitimate competitor.

I'll be impressed when MS comes out with an original idea. Not saying Apple is always first with an idea, but MS never is. They simply take others.

Totally, totally agree. I would much, much more prefer to see Microsoft come out with a legit, usable player that isn't directly competing with Apple by somewhat similar design and goals.

But guys, being a windows user but a soon-to-be-eventually Apple macbook pro owner, I have to admit that this piece of machinery is... actually sort of sexy. May be a little thicker and most likely a slightly dumber interface, but it's still pretty nice and legit compeition; not sure if it'll intimidate Apple severly, though...

It looks about twice as thick as the iPod Touch. And it doesn't seem much different than the current Zune (except IE Mobile...not good). And multi-touch will probably not be nearly as functional as an iPhone's or iPod's.

Why would I care about radio? I have Wunder Radio app which gives me not only local stations in NYC, but tens of thousands on this earth?

The only interesting thing is OLED. I wish Apple would incorporate this into iPod/iPhones already.

Microsoft has no idea what they're doing. Yes, it does use Zune Marketplace for music and it does not use Plays For Sure. Yes it now uses Zune Marketplace for video now and no it no longer uses XBOX Live marketplace.

This should be very interesting to see what will happen once Palm releases the Pre and if there is a lawsuit that follows for multi-touch. It's clear that Microsoft is following Palm's lead.
