if that was a ipod you guys would all be jizzing at its sexiness....

Apple would never make anything that ugly. It wouldn't have visible screws, it wouldn't be diarrhea-colored and it would be Mac/iTunes compatible.

Try again, my good sir/madam. ;)

ugh i can never understand why people prefer a zune over a ipod i have used both and ipods are clearly a 100x better

Can't see that writing-off a device that you haven't even seen or used is a good idea; I hope most people are a little more open-minded than that.

Guess MS's more recent history does not inspire confidence though...

Still, I've said it before, more competition for Apple is good for the consumer - think more feature packed devices for less ch-ching$$.

Giddy up!

Actually there might be a reason it looks so similar.
MS might be trying to capitalize on the time money apple sinks into advertising. By making a product that looks similar people will automatically associate it with the "need for the product" that the apple's advertising leaves us (by advertising I am referring to tv ads as well as apple's design characteristics).

Why didn't this happen with the original Zune?

Wow, OLED screen. Can't wait to see it. It's about time Apple starts putting OLED screens in their iphones/ipod touches. The device also looks very cool, but I hope there are options besides Mobile IE...

What do the 91,000 people that work for Microsoft do? Have they ever had an original idea? And when they copy they can't even get it right.

I have the distinct impression that there are indeed people within Microsoft who have good ideas; it's just that every last one of them is slowly, systematically strangled to death by committee before it poses a danger of actually working. You can find the odd blog or two by "people on the inside" if you look around, mostly detailing the mind-numbing incompetence that permeates the organization.

competition is always a good thing. radio + oled = ahead of ipod touch. I don't see why you would rate this negative just because you love apple to death

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I consider traditional radio to be something of an anachronism. I don't understand the need to have it on an mp3 player. If you have a device that carries around your entire music library, can stream music off various sites, and can download podcasts from sources like NPR and BBC, then what's the point?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

Ok guys. Calm down. No one seems to realize how good this might be for xbox owners. I have an iPhone. Writing on it now. But if this thing does half the stuff im imagining as far as intergration into live, I'm going to own both. If you own a 360, you have no excuse to not be exited. The beauty of it is that microsoft has no choice but to cram this thing full of features just to stay afloat against the iPod touch. I can't wait to hear what's in store. Open your minds guys.

If you have an iPhone look at the bottom. There's two down there. If you have an aluminium MacBook, flip it over, there are four there.

How "innovative!"

Microsoft manages to come up with another novel idea -- a WiFi enabled, touchscreen, Web surfing, movie watching, music playing, handheld gaming device.

Why are they announcing it so early?

Cause they're stupid. Something Microsoft hasn't learned and Apple has. Never comment on a to be released product.

Imagine if Apple would have said they were working on a touch screen phone with iPod goodness and web access? The market would have been flooded by many phones trying to imitate the iPhone by the time the iPhone came.

Same with everything Apple makes and people copy. Apple keeps secrets, that, a secret and when it comes out, it is unexpected and has had enough time to be developed and tested making it great. Now, by the time competition has the equivalent out (in this case a touch Zune), Apple already has a strong, loyal & big market with great advertising and year and a half research lead. This leaves competition scrambling and always playing catch-up.

Now, apply that to everything Apple does and you get the picture on one reason why Apple is successful in what it does.

By the time Apple get's this to market Apple will have had their device out for 2 years and it will be in it's third generation.

While it is good to see some more competition, the specs seem largely disappointing and I doubt it will have the flair and usability (as well as things like the App Store) of the iPod touch platform. I wish you luck Microsoft! :p

...Beside, MS pretty much is copying Apple, as they normally due. Can't beat em, copy them...

... You spelt "do" wrong.

In any case, I like the competition and such but I don't think that the Zune will do very well in my opinion.

Apple announced iPhone several months before it launched.

So many people are missing the significance of this. It's a TRUE video player - it does HD video output and it has a 16:9 screen. Apple has no devices like this, yet it continues to sell media in 16:9 format.

Wow this doesn't actually even seem that impressive. Sometimes things seem impressive but then aren't, but this one doesn't even seem impressive to begin with.

I don't see what everyone's complaining about. I think it looks pretty sophisticated and it has some nice features that apple hasn't implemented... yet.

Ok so the user experience most likely wont be as polished as Apple makes it but if they subsidise it like they do the xbox 360 and the prices are good then this might be more popular than previous Zunes have been.

I must be tired. Never thought i'd support a Microsoft product

OLED screen? Who cares. Will it make my videos better? I doubt it. Battery life better? If so, bring it on. If not... pfft!

HD radio: Jobs doesn't think people want radios on their iPod or they would have radios. I'd like to have a radio, but admit, I'd likely seldom use it.

HD video out? How often does anyone use their iPhone or touch to play a video over a display? Me, never. Useless feature? Maybe.

Screws? I love 'em. Easier to replace the battery. You just need one of those special screw drivers.

Opinions?
