I worked for DoD and currently the Department of Veterans Affairs at a giant VA hospital, Skype was what we used for conference calls as well.

We did however just in the past few weeks switched to Microsoft teams though.

My co-workers are supporting your Skype implementation in the VA (as well as the migration to Teams)...it's not "Skype"....it's "Skype for Business". Two entirely different platforms.

We don’t know what the final figure will be if it goes through, but a number I read was $50B. And MSFT investors seem to be cheering this? I don’t get it, but I’ve never used the app either.

If MSFT wanted to get into this space, why didn’t they just create their own service?

Because building your own service and attracting the users is far harder than buying a service with established users.

Also, at $50B this is potentially a huge windfall for MS. Reading up on this (which others should do if they truly want to know these things), similar companies like FB have ballooned to a value near $725B over time. So if MS buys it, the successfully monetize, then they sell for a much higher price....this is a huge windfall for stockholders. Not to mention a huge boon to Microsoft's ad business.

I didn't know Trump could block the sale. On what grounds?
He just says he has that power, then the news repeats it, then everyone assumes it's true. This article even says that he is now personally involved in this sale. The government does certainly usually have regulatory power over mergers and can block them in extraordinary circumstances, but that is supposed to be a non-political bureaucratic operation, not something the President personally supervises and influences based on his own political interests. Apparently now the President gets to approve or block American companies from acquisitions? He pulled that with Amazon, blocking them from deals because he's angry at what the WaPo writes. We sure we're ok with that? Sounds a bit Soviet to me.

LOL, this ain't happening. It's just Trump talking **** he's has no clue about as usual.

There’s nothing “LOL” about it. You’re laughing at your own democracy, your society going in the toilet. Nothing funny about it at all.

Assuming fickle teenagers don’t find the next hot thing. When Twitter bought Vine they had the same dreams. TikTok has 4x the users as Vine did but 200 million users were no small thing. Twitter screwed with it and essentially broke it then shut it down. Microsoft doesn’t have a good history of making social networks work. They could just leave it alone but the temptation will be too great. In 5 years its more likely MS will be looking for a way to dump TIkTok for a fraction of what they paid because they screwed it up or people just moved on to next ” Disruptive platform“

I get the point, and that is the reason why acquisitions like this are pursued, but an intelligent company like MSFT can’t build something for even half this amount?

Seems like irrational exuberance to me, no matter what CNBC says.

This is nonsense.Any govt can dictate what it’s personnel does.

Worst excuse ever. No excuse for swallowing this kind of bs story.

tRump didn't just say government employees and devices.
He thinks he can ban TikTok. He can't. It's not technologically possible.
Even if he can convince Apple and Google to remove the app from the stores.
With the possibility of side loading on an Android device, there is no way to block the app.
There are proxies and VPN even if he managed to get Verizon, T-Mobile and others to black list the servers.

Think about it. In China, where Google and other services are banned, people still are able to get them.
Our infrastructure is much more porous than that of China.

All talk from the Orange Fool.

The question now is whether you believe Microsoft will refuse Chinese requests to hand over user information and data. I sure don't.

I would’ve rather seen TikTok banned. At least some point it will come back because presidents aren't for life. Microsoft buying it means it’s going to turn into a big pile of steaming 💩

Isn't Tik Tok just a new version of Vine? Wasn't Vine just a far more limited version of Youtube?
I don't get it.

Yeah Skype for business, actually didn't realize that they were different platforms. I thought they were one in the same with some features added in for business. I never used Skype so I didn't know..

TikTok is just like vine but they shut down, but it caters to the current and future generation of kids with the ever so shrinking attention span. I think that's why it's so popular.

Actually TikTok has up to 60 second long videos. While this is short it's much longer than Vine with 6 seconds. I couldn't stand Vine when it came out because it seemed to be people making silly faces. Six seconds isn't long enough to say anything. TikTok has videos in different categories and so far I haven't noticed the level of censorship that's on YouTube.

Just to be more clear on why it's a national security concern, it's mainly because of geo location data. The US government doesn't want the possibility of that data being sent back to the Chinese government (or any foreign government), and US service members use these kind of apps at bases, etc.

It's not related to just Tik Tok. I forget which one, but there was another app that ran into the same security issues several years back because US troops were using the app at military installations.
It's not a secret where military bases are.... Not sure why that would be an issue. This seems tin foil hat type of stuff your talking about.

Maybe this is how it went.

1) TikTok needed to host all (US) data on US soil. So goes to Amazon, Microsoft and Google for solutions.
2) Microsoft thinks it may lose this major customer to Amazon or Google, does the maths, and realises if it buys the company it will be paying hosting to itself, ensuring a big win for Azure cloud for the next five to ten years at least.
3) Plus a chance to cross sell Skype etc to a young crowd who are yet to get their first salary and could just give it a new lease of life.
4) On the "Chinese" side of things, bear in mind TikTok is mostly non-Chinese owned, with big US investors. They will be exiting with big smiles on their faces.
5) Forget about the CCP - complete red herring. They're unlikely to have any strategic use for publicly available teen dancing videos. They *are* worried about the US controlling *their* data (which is why foreign companies must host Chinese data in China). Understandable given the US, not China, is the only world superpower, snooping on everyone with impunity and dropping bombs in any corner of the world it finds advantageous, and has an overt aim of overthrowing the CCP and carving up China! But in this case Douyin, the much larger Chinese app, will presumably just split off and remain in ByteDance's hands in China. What's more the CCP is continually clamping down on apps like TikTok for content issues, and don't relish foreign ownership of Chinese companies either, so they're probably happy to see the back of TikTok.

Google is not banned in China, nor is any other tech company. Google withdrew voluntarily from China in 2010 because they did not accept the rules and laws of the country.

If you want to operate in France, you obey French laws. If you want to operate in China, you obey Chinese laws.

If you want to operate in the USA, though, it doesn’t matter if you comply with the laws, because the president might still nationalize your business at a whim. ”WTO? International law? Hah! I'd better get myself a lawyer!”

In China, where Google and other services are banned, people still are able to get them.

For anything on Chinese territory they would. Same as Microsoft does when the FBI or NSA asks them for data - or sends them a National Security Letter commanding them to.

It’s the same for al governments including the US. Fully documented in the Snowden revelations.

meanwhile, quite coincidentally, sarah cooper has been talking recently about going TikTok with her videos.
can you imagine how that would be?
videos like the one below, accessed by millions of under 25 year olds daily. before the election and all. just saying/

Then you’ve been also asleep through the Snowden revelations, Cambridge Analytica scandal and Zuckerberg hearing. Because the comment suggests you haven’t woken up yet....
Indeed.

The best secure social media app for Americans that respects privacy... is no social media app. It is not needing validation from unknown people. No cravings of filling a void from psychologically fishy looking manipulative apps.

iMessages, WhatsApp or equivalent for communications with family and close friends could have been enough, but how the world was taken by storm by Twitter, Instagram and Co shows us otherwise.

US is probably not the country who should champion the Muslim issue. US companies would be banned long time ago if Muslim issue can be used as a reason for punishing companies. Plus, US media reports on China related issue are pretty much disinformation campaign.

you must be a blue shill, they always seem to not want to do anything because of something being problematic in the past, oh and they’re eager to ignore video evidence and eyewitness testimony. You check out.
