Nope, it's targeted at schools to buy. No student would want a computer that locks them to the app store.

Depends on the school. Many will jump at the no-nonsense config & deployments offered with Windows 10 S. It's for education, not playing games.

4GB of ram???? hope you don't plan on having more than 8 tabs open...

I'll go for the 16GB config, maybe with the i7 CPU and 256GB drive (512GB bit overkill for my needs).

If you bought the latest macbook pro with touch strip, you should absolutely be ashamed. Microsoft has such a beautiful and fast laptop starting at 999.99. It beats the newest macbook pro laptop in all aspects.....

Pro upgrade is also free until the end of the year.

$999 sounds like a great deal until you see you get a lousy 4GB RAM and the 8GB option adds $300 to the price.

The i7 models are $1599 for 8GB RAM and it costs $2199 to take this to 16GB RAM.

In reality, these are very expensive systems lumbered with Windows as your operating system

Windows 10 does not need more than 4 gb ram to run well.....

eh? a machine for £1000 that only has 4gb of ram, a gimped OS no USB C, if apple released that, you'd be like why can't apple innovate. I like windows machines but I would never advise someone spending a grand on a 4gb machine in 2017

Yep the $999 price that has grabbed everyone's attention really gets you a crappy laptop. Clearly the $1299 model is the one they expect everyone to buy as it has all the colour options, but I personally wouldn't go for anything less than 16GB RAM and that costs $2199 before taxes.

Screen capture of the Alcantara keyboard after a month of use. . .gross.

I root for Microsoft, I root for Samsung, I root for Android because the competition is great. It makes everyone better and is absolutely a necessity for the consumer.

Having said that. Meh.

4GB is nowhere near enough in most use cases. Maybe if you are just writing articles in notepad, but who is dropping a grand on a laptop (before tax) to do that?

Wow, what a neat little laptop, aimed to the education market! MS has really knocked it out of the park with a small, cheap, well built machine that can run a variety of apps!

Wait... $999 for base model with 4gb ram and 128gb SSD?
$2199 for 16gb, and Integrated Graphics?
Locked to the Windows store?
Locked to a barren wasteland of nothingness?

How can schools use this when they can barely afford new textbooks? I force Chromebooks killing the competition again.

Panos Panay mentioned Macs several times and also said this was targeted to high school kids close to graduation. Business Insider referred to it as a "MacBook Air" killer. Obviously that's what Microsoft wants.

LOL. I didn't see the presentation. He really said that? MacOS already has gatekeeper installed if you want to control your kid. This isn't killing anything. Besides, to be honest, Apple isn't exactly killing it in education with Macs. MS picked the wrong ones to go after if they're trying to make more in roads there.

IMO, this new Surface laptop is just meh...and unfortunately, that's not good in terms of putting the pressure on Apple to do better.

My God that design is sexy, and the price is ridiculously cheap. I wonder with the PD hardware inside how long it'll be before someone gets full blown Windows running on it...

Sorry, but when Apple is neglecting its computer range, Microsoft is killing it every...... single..... year....!

Most use cases require a good browser and microsoft office apps. I'm sure most use cases can do that with 4 GB of ram; you are not most use cases.
