Wow, what a neat little laptop, aimed to the education market! MS has really knocked it out of the park with a small, cheap, well built machine that can run a variety of apps!

Wait... $999 for base model with 4gb ram and 128gb SSD?
$2199 for 16gb, and Integrated Graphics?
Locked to the Windows store?
Locked to a barren wasteland of nothingness?

How can schools use this when they can barely afford new textbooks? I force Chromebooks killing the competition again.

Yep, if this were 200.00 to schools then I'd say look out. Schools are stupid for the most part. It's all about price with some idiot IT guy and Board making decisions. This announcement today changes very little for anyone making purchasing decisions. Windows was always an option. IT can already manage win 10 and restrict it.

This thing is dead in the water.

Who is stupid enough to spend $1K for an educational computer running a cut down OS?

Apple is getting creamed in the education market because they are going up against $199 Chrome books.

If you're spending that kind of cash there are a hundred better WinPCs that are cheaper or a Mac at that price point if you want a premium machine.
Microsoft doesn't expect to sell a lot of these at $1000, it's their equivalent of a "concept car", showing OEMs the possibilities of what can be done. The article says it expects OEMs to make models costing "$189 to $300" which will compete with Chromebooks in the education market.

$1000 and 4Go of Ram ?
I'll wait for this guy's opinion before deciding.

Most use cases require a good browser and microsoft office apps. I'm sure most use cases can do that with 4 GB of ram; you are not most use cases.

Microsoft office does not run great with 4GB RAM. Outlook grinds to a halt, and other apps quickly become slow and unresponsive.

If you have very basic needs, buy an iPad. You don't need a Windows PC. The people still buying laptops tend to need to use more advanced software and 4GB is nowhere near enough for them.

Right.....and that is why the iPad together with the keyboard does not even have a touchpad on the keybord, forcing the user to constantly go between the keyboard for typing, and the touch screen for navigating ? :)

You can do a little research on that - 'gorilla arm' can be minimized further the closer the screen is to your body. The more one bends the arm, the less the fatigue. Having a vertical touch screen still isn't ideal, but this is Apple's way of compromise.

Pro upgrade is also free until the end of the year.

$999 sounds like a great deal until you see you get a lousy 4GB RAM and the 8GB option adds $300 to the price.

The i7 models are $1599 for 8GB RAM and it costs $2199 to take this to 16GB RAM.

In reality, these are very expensive systems lumbered with Windows as your operating system

Really, compared to the $2199 for the MacBook Pro 13" WITHOUT TOUCHBAR that matches this spec... yeah I would hardly call it overpriced...

LOL. I didn't see the presentation. He really said that? MacOS already has gatekeeper installed if you want to control your kid. This isn't killing anything. Besides, to be honest, Apple isn't exactly killing it in education with Macs. MS picked the wrong ones to go after if they're trying to make more in roads there.
I think it was a confused event. Microsoft was billing it as an education event which is why most tech sites assumed they would be launching a chromebook like machine. But listening to Panos Panay the device is clearly targeted to Mac users. The device doesn't really match what the event was supposed to be about.

This is alright, but it really isn't that great, although it is focused around education. I was kind of expecting more from Microsoft in this space.

As for whatever they've done to Minecraft, they've just implemented Scratch into Minecraft. I don't like it but it's Education Edition only, so that's fine. The standard version already has a great coding oppertunity in the form of Command Blocks - very powerful when used correctly.

Which “Core i5” are they using? They are awfully vague. They only mention Intel HD Graphics 620, which according to Intel’s database (ARK) is exclusive to dual-core U series 7200U and 7300U.

I don't get it. Why would someone get this over a Surface Pro 4? It's more expensive when it has the same RAM, CPU, and SSD, except it has a lower resolution display and camera (no rear camera), missing many of the sensors, and weighs nearly twice as much.

I can't watch the video right now. Would someone explain the use case that makes the Surface Laptop a better fit than the Pro 4?

If you bought the latest macbook pro with touch strip, you should absolutely be ashamed. Microsoft has such a beautiful and fast laptop starting at 999.99. It beats the newest macbook pro laptop in all aspects.....

Windows 10 does not need more than 4 gb ram to run well.....

If I'm paying $1000 for a computer it better last at least 5 years. Come back and tell me how well that 4GB ram is running after 3 or 4 years. Also, 128GB storage and limiting apps to their App Store do not beat the new MacBook Pro so no this doesn't win in all aspects. As always both have advantages and disadvantages and it's up the the consumer to decide what is best for their needs.

Windows "S" for surveillance!

MS is data mining and adding ads to the os, so many reasons not to buy hardware from them along with high prices for product too.

you have no idea what components are inside that $2199 Windows laptop yet. It could be a crap SSD, slow RAM, slow i5 processor. Microsoft were vague on pricing and we see why now, and they are vague on the specs which could also point to more bad news. We do know the MacBook Pro uses high-end components.

There is a lot to like here, but the upgrade pricing from stock set up is too steep. Come on, Appl... I mean, Microsoft.

100% will be pre-ordering once available on the Microsoft UK store + upgrade to full Windows 10.

Apple caught snoozing. Again.

Yeap. The US price for the top end model WITH that touchscreen is the exact same as the MacBook Pro with the same spec WITHOUT the Touch Bar.... so when it hits the UK even with the Brexit tax it will beat Apple on pricing, match them on build quality. A very nice interesting device.

Screen capture of the Alcantara keyboard after a month of use. . .gross.

That is gross. Of course you can clean it with some lightly soapy warm water, if you're careful not to let it soak under the keys. Beyond the alcantara picking / soaking up dirt and oil, it will also show wear, especially if you're using it daily. MS would have been better off choosing a material like real wood (wood veneer) as the keyboard cover. Unfinished wood can feel nice to the touch, and when it picks up oils / dirt, takes on a patina, instead of just looking like dirty fabric.

Of course I'm partial to wood since my company makes a super thin wood veneer that can be used in situations like this...

Apple macbooks start at $1299, you have no reason to even laugh and the screen is a mess on this device so I give microsoft props for giving a beautiful device with up to date specs and not a basic m3 processor......
