BS. They couldn’t rearchitect themselves out of a paper bag if they can’t even design a decent UI.
Name the last time MacOS was architecture. It's still VERY much like 10.5 with a few pretty utilities added to it and a fresh coat of paint UI wise. Heck other than Dark Mode i can't name ANYTHING added to it since 10.5 or 10.6 that I actually don't just ignore or disable on a fresh install.

I hate that all this kind of stuff is being added to the OS. I miss the days where an OS was just that… and all additional features were optional. Windows 11 is incredibly bloated.

Well, the internet did actually change the entire world and way of life for most people.
And you know what? AI can do the same thing as it matures. The idea that we can just tell our computers what we want them to do instead of mastering various specific app controls and commands is potentially game changing. As just one example, the idea that I could tell Excel what I want to do with multiple spreadsheets of data in plain English instead of fussing with formulas, queries, and other technical steps is a big deal.

You clearly weren't around for the internet boom of the mid-to-late 90s.
Thank you for reminding me that I'm getting older.

Fair play to Microsoft it's a good idea. It'd be nice if they dropped ALL the Windows legacy support and created a modern AI baked Windows OS from scratch. There's just SO much legacy junk in Windows for the enterprise sector it's insane.
The legacy support is why the enterprise world still runs on Windows. If they break compatibility, I might as well go Linux.

Agree it’s bad enough the other companies are doing it but it makes me sick to my stomach Apple is going along with it
Eh, ‘AI’ by itself is fine, once you get beyond the hype train (which is tough) and enable only local processing, which is tough(er) in some cases.

There are a TON of ‘AI companies’ out there, and much like when OpenAI busted open the scene with Chat-GPT, a ton of investors screaming ‘take my money!’ but not always with a well-defined ‘killer app’ in sight, so a lot of ‘fluff’ but there is real investment and some progress happening ranging from speech to text (which we’re all used to by now), real-time translation, safety (e.g. fire/smoke, leaks, improper equipment), security, and more. Let alone huge growing investment into, well - ‘SkyNet’ in military and government sides of things.

A couple of companies back we were using AI to sift through millions of FB and other posts looking for our specific customers/brands, e.g. interesting pics with Coke bottles in them, for the brand’s social media team - using AI for first passes to filter millions to hundreds of possibles.

Of course, you can ASK ChatGPT and the like how to stand up a kubernetes cluster and it will answer with <something> - not always right, but there is progress being made in specific areas ‘beyond the hype.’. Of course, most of us just want Sitir to suck a LOT less.

The Rabbit won like best of CES but there was an interesting follow-up recently saying it’s essentially trash. Progress in local NPU/compute capability will eventually hit a sweet spot (maybe with the M4 for some things) and intersect what things users REALLY want with realistic capabilities (and compute) without round-tripping everything o the cloud and/or China servers.

We’ll see… but there is at least some progress in the industry moving from ‘it can do ANYTHING!!!!’ to ‘show me real value and solving real problems.’. It’ll get there. Eventually.
Maybe. :)

I can finally start considering a Windows machine If the performance claims and support for Windows are true this is the nail in the coffin for Intel and Apple goes back to being against the ropes with Mac.
I remember the last major moment for Windows was Windows 95. The entire industry was excited during its release and it became so popular and a defining moment for MS. It literally nearly decimated the Mac and by extension Apple. I see similar things with this Windows / CoPilot / ARM launch today. If MS continues to execute right and Apple has little to show at WWDC, the Mac (not Apple) could end up being in the same situation as it was during the Windows 95 launch.

A 15” HDR2 touch screen Surface laptop with 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 22 hours battery life is $1299. A 13” OLED iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 10 hours battery life is $1,648. I think Apple may be seriously challenged here. Especially iPad.

A better comparison would be iPad Pro to Surface Pro. And the screen on the iPad Pro is much better than any of the new Surface devices.

...but macOS is not? How big are those occasionally point updates again? What are fresh install sizes head-to-head? My guess is not that different, but I actually do not know.

Other than that, I'm with you. I come from Amiga roots where a great, window-based, multi-tasking OS originally fit into 256K but then grew into needing a "huge" 512K to hold the entire system. Yes kiddies, that K, not M or G. Insane! ;)

Recall? So, Apple's Time Machine? You really needed AI for that one, Microsoft?

Yeah, I was just thinking that’s a pretty useful…. Just ask it to show you the website you visited a couple weeks ago… an eggs Benedict recipe…. And then boom! Pops up the page. That would be really nice.

Likewise, the ability to modify photos by targeting the background or foreground sounds amazing…

No way I’m going to switch from macOS to Windows… But it would be awesome if Apple added some cool features like this….
I think some of these things are showing up in the googles photo app now…

I don’t know enough about the tech. Microsoft’s website says the new Surface Pro display is OLED. It also says 14 hours battery life. Is the Surface Pro fanless?

MS definitely spent a good portion of their event comparing these new devices to the M3 MBA
Only way to compete is to steal their thunder and release the next generation sooner before users have a chance to switch. This likely bodes well that we will see M4 across the line up sooner than later.

Very true. Apple has made some grave mistakes recently and they need a reset to pay attention to the details and get macOS stable again. They also need to shed the distractions.
