I think that MS is trying to get folks to download it by offering the OS free during the first year of release. If you wait you will pay in year 2 and beyond.

Should help a bit, but with the majority of installs being in the corporate world, it wont help too much, since they are slow to move as it requires updating all their applications that integrate or sit on the OS.

Clever move by MS. After the first year, they release 10.1 or Win10 SP1. You can either pony up for the update or keep running a bug riddled public beta. Since when has MS gotten Windows right on the first attempt? Windows 3.0 -> 3.1 (got it right), Win95 -> Win98 (got it right), XP -> XP SP2 (got it right), Vista -> Win7 (got it right), Win8 -> Win8.1 (Metro is still crap, but there are 3rd party shells).... Win10 -> Win10.1 (after it's no longer free:p).

Tell that to those people who fully accepted Adobe's move with the subscription model of Creative Cloud. Many got suckered into paying a monthly subscription to use necessary software that really, only big production houses could afford.

The smart ones are sticking with CS6 and older until something better comes along.

Not the same at all, no one will buy a computer that will only work for a year. If adobe or office stops working, the computer is still useable. Do you think microsoft is going to want to help millions of users downgrade back to windows 7/8?

If microsoft made windows a subscription, it would guarantee the death of windows.

Giving it away for free to existing Win 7/8 users won't harm MS too much. They have always made the majority of their money through OEM licenses anyway.

51/50 blame for the subscription misunderstanding

51% of the blame for the confusion should belong to the posters for not understanding what they read. 49% of the blame should go to MR for a horrible, awkwardly written sentence. Sweet Jeebus it is bad. Someone skimming the OP might come to the wrong impression about what's happening. But still, come on people.

"Windows as a service"

uh oh... so upgrade for free for the first year.... but then did we forget to mention that it's $99/year after that?

It's free for the first year and then they charge a subscription fee.

Wait, what? Free for the first year. How does that work? If a user decides in a year they don't want to pay for 10 does it automatically roll them back to 7.1 or 8? Not likely. Make it free...or charge up front. Just sneaky.

Looks like subscription to me:

"Free for the first year"

"Current OS for the lifetime of the device"

"Windows is turning into a service"

They're just putting off the bombshell drop for a little while.

So, free for the first year, then... what?... a subscription OS?

If you don't pay up, how will that square with the whole "...keep the operating system current for the lifetime of the device" thing?

The Windows 8.0 numbers are actually passable, though its mostly from new PC sales. Not surprising that people without touchscreens would give it a wide berth, given how Microsoft baked that into the OS.

Still too much of a "Sybil" experience IMO: Q. Is it Windows 7 or Windows Tiles? A. Depends entirely on what you select...

I wonder where they got that idea. Hmmm... LOL

Companies, including apple, steal ideas from others all the time, apple is founded on a stolen idea

Point is this, giving windows 10 away for free is a smart move

Once a device is upgraded to Windows 10, Microsoft plans to keep the operating system current for the lifetime of the device.

That's impressive if they actually keep that promise, but I'll admit I'm skeptical. That would be a huge thing for a tech company to do, it would be great if they pull it off and hopefully it would put pressure on other tech companies to do the same.

How was apple founded on a stolen idea? They created the Apple I in their garage?

True, it's not the same. I just see much more potential for adoption (gaming etc.) in AR versus VR at this point.

I'm not sure I agree. Easier to wear maybe, but it's harder to believably mesh with reality and there's no fixed environment to target. What if I have a messy desk or living room? Will your UI still make sense? Why do I want to wear goggles to watch Netflix on a hovering TV? How does cutting a virtual hole in my wall (assuming I have an appropriate wall I guess?) improve my Minecraft experience?

There are some applications where it makes sense to me, 3D modeling for example, but it seems more niche than VR.

Just got an email saying that Fable Legends will be able to be played on both my xbox AND pc. That's really cross platform gaming right there. One thing I couldn't stand *shifty eyes to diablo 3* was having two separate installs in which the toons were completely separate...

Nobody said anything about a subscription model.

Or do you just like forcing words into people's mouths to prove a weak point?

Beat me to it. Some people just love to skim and complain.

Now, I need to go back and find the post a few months ago where I got my tail kicked up and down the forum block for suggesting that MS give away 10 like Apple does. Will I get any apologies... nooooooooooooo.

This is quite exciting.

I hate having to manage lots of Windows (most 7, some 8.1) machines at my work, but this looks to make things a lot better and more powerful with device synchronisation.

Hopefully they'll pull it off and it'll all be a big success. Free is the way forward, as it means the platform can advance much quicker when everyone is updating to the latest release.

I understand the confusion, but nowhere do they say 'free for the first year,' they do say that you will qualify for an update for one year. I know the verbiage is lousy, but do you really believe they are that crazy?

Hopefully, I won't be proven wrong, but I run a MBP at home, so it won't bother me either way.

happy to be wrong about it, especially if the article is misquoting them. However, for me its the middle point that says subscription. How do you keep everyone on the latest OS version all the time? That was Adobe's big subscription benefit and its exactly the same point Autodesk are starting to push.

I think they're going to go for it. I think they'll go in cheap to make it attractive, and I think they'll sell upfront 3, or 5 year packages to make it feel like a purchase rather than a rental.

I saw surprisingly many familiar features, especially Spartan. In terms of end-user features the browser pretty much mimics Safari: reading list, reader mode, share sheets and Spotlight suggestions (albeit more sophisticated with Cortana) as the new features. On a system level they demonstrated a feature that looked remarkably similar to Notification Center, a new photos application with smart collections, lots of iCloud/Handoff-like integration built directly into the apps and a more organised System Preferences panel (something which I always hated in Windows). It does show that Apple is on track with OS X and still a guiding influence, albeit Microsoft is starting to catch up at a much quicker pace now (and with the much, much better gaming support and now XBOX streaming).

I do wonder whether Apple has intentionally sidetracked the idea to bring Siri to the Mac. It could greatly alleviate some needlessly repetitive tasks. They could have done it years ago. What intrigues me the most is how much Microsoft are betting on Cortana integration in Windows 10. She’s all over the place. Hopefully she’s not becoming the infamous Office paperclip, in disguise.

I hope that Apple comes up with a Google Now/Cortana competitor next. Siri feels more like a glorified voice control in comparison, especially when you’re not living in the US and don’t get many of the integrated services.

Free for one year? Is MS really stupid enough to sell an OS that works on a subscription model? Who would buy a computer that has a monthly fee to use?

After the epic failure that was 8, I really thought it was impossible for an MS to do anything even dumber....

Where does it say anything about a subscription? You're taking it out of context.

Giving it away for free is mind blowing and will really impact their bottom line. Unlike Apple, they rely on the sales of Windows. Apple gets their money by selling you the hardware. MS doesn't really do hardware (other then the xbox/mice/surface tablet)
  • Xbox and Xbox accessories (Kinet, controllers)
  • mice
  • keyboards
  • web cams
  • headsets
  • Surface tablet
  • Windows phones
  • health (wrist) band
  • HoloLens
  • Surface Hub

Google, who dominate smartphones, trying to expand Android up beyond tablets and Microsoft, who dominate desktops, trying to become a serious contender in tablets and phones...

The question is, will Google replace Microsoft as dominant in the desktop world, will Microsoft replace Google as dominant in the mobile world, or will things tick along as before?

Don't you know that we have expert analysts on call?

So because they used electronic components, they're guilty of stealing - wow that's a new one. :p

Is that not he sarcasm face? Oh dear - sorry! I was trying to show how ridiculous arguments like "Apple Pay is nothing new: We've had phones, NFC, and tokenisation for ages!". Or even "The iPhone wasn't revolutionary, there were touch screen phones before it, and Linux had an app store..."

I am not a Windows user, however I do support for extended family and friends. For those of you that are using TP, or anyone that knows, does WIN10 still have a registery like past versions, that is prone to corruption when installing/uninstalling software? Is there still the issues with corrupt drivers?

I wonder where they got that idea. Hmmm... LOL

Microsoft gave out free upgrades from Vista to 7 and also from 7 to 8 when customers bought new PC's during a certain period. This free Win 10 offer during the 1st year is not much different.

So if there's anyone who borrowed the idea about giving away for free a new OS, it's :apple:
