Competition for Google? Awesome. I'm looking forward to it.

Edge in its current state on Windows is painful. It's usable but barely - has a lot of bugs and doesn't do a lot of things that Chrome does. Chrome is far superior.

I've used Brave and … while I like it, I haven't used it for any lengthy period of time (>3 months). But I think even Brave is superior to Edge.

I look forward to a Microsoft managed chromium clone - maybe Microsoft will even contribute research to the open source project?

To me, one of the biggest problems regarding web browsers it battery consumption. Chrome makes my Macbook battery life last like a Pentium laptop. Opera is the best browser for laptop users, while it blocks ads by default, on the contrary of even Safari, which let some ads to show.

This isn't good news for me considering the fact that on my 144hz monitor on Windows, Edge is the only browser which has smooth scrolling

I’ve actually seen Chrome bring networks to a grinding halt because of the Chrome server running hidden in the background conflicting with services on company servers as they fight for shared resources. It’s funny that Microsoft is switching to it. It’s likelu because Chrome has been downloaded on machines and actively blocking other browsers which is a problem I had at a hospital I worked at which required Explorer for many functions, but employees kept downloading chrome and they were no longer able to block it because of changes Google made that would force them to block most user internet functions to be able to block the download.

Chrome is quickly becoming everything that people hated about IE 6 on Windows.

Right now Firefox is the best browser on Windows and Mac I think, for most users.

It's a very good browser. Hopefully people who think their snarky comments are clever and appreciated will have actually used it and judged it on the merits first.

edit: too late lol.
You're right in that people need to give it a chance and bring their own conclusion to how they see the browser but as a Tech working in education IE has turned to hot garbage in general. We pushed IE as the default browser for years and finally this past year we needed to change it to Chrome. We keep very much up to date with technology but IE seemed to have more issues than it was worth. Don't get me wrong it's a fast browser but when it comes to compatibility it lags far behind the rest.

But as you stated, yes people need to come across their own conclusion based on use, not because it's MS IE.

Firefox offers smooth scrolling, but I always got weird ghosting artifacts with it enabled. Like you, Edge offers the best smooth scrolling experience.

isn't this the same week Microsoft have announced they will no longer be using their own rendering engine but using Google's blink engine?

They are not discontinuing it. They are just changing the engine. Microsoft spent tons on marketing Edge and it happens to be the only one that can do 4K on Netflix in the market.
Wait, Chrome can do 4K and so can Firefix, I believe.

I thought Safari was the only one that cannot display 4K content (which is ridiculous considering Apple makes and sells 4 and 5K screens).

I have tried to use it as my main browser on Windows so many times.. But there is always something not working. The 1Password Extension is horrible. Rendering issues keeps happening on various sites. Bugs when writing in IP.Board forums and your spell checking is directly linked to your Windows Keyboard Layout.... Like come on? I don't want to change my entire Windows Keyboard Layout settings just to get English spell checking in my browser...

Opera already exists as an alternative to Chrome for people who don't trust Google. I don't see much benefit in having yet another inefficient Chromium-based browser on Mac.

Opera is using Chromium so you can't really avoid Google by using Opera these days.

This is the real question. It's not like Edge offers unique features unavailable to Mac users.
From what I have read, it's so that web developers will have a version of Edge they can test on without having to boot windows or have a separate computer to test on. Not necessarily to gain any marketshare on Mac.

I agree, it's a very good browser with built in PDF support. It's fast and has low resources at least in Windows 10 whereas both Chrome and Firefox tend to be memory hogs. My only quibble with Edge is that MS took away the option to disable JavaScript.

Why not?

Same reason why Apple ported Safari to Windows some time ago. Seems as good a reason as any.

Hmmm, I came across the word Windows, had flashbacks of frustration and disappointment, then stopped reading. There’s a reason (a very good reason) why I bought a MacBook 10 years ago and never looked back.

I would be more excited for this if Microsoft hadn't just announced they were getting rid of their own rendering engine and moving to Chromium.

Monocultures are bad.

What is the issue with using a single rendering engine for the web? It's not like Google can hold Chromium hostage like Microsoft did with IE 6, Chromium is open source.
