user interface

Really? That is kind of subjective IMO. However, Windows has a touch screen interface, where OS X does not. A touch screen interface is something I would consider progress in further improving the user interface. Apple probably agrees considering iOS is a touch screen system.

I'm not sure how anyone can expect a reasoned discussion about anything Windows related on this site.

Windows 10 is an important release and I was really impressed with what MS showed off today. It's not OS X vs. Windows - they are 2 different things. Both are evolving into great operating systems and I'm Windows 10 is going to be a hit.

The whole production would have looked a lot slicker had they presented it on an iMac.

funny how the Dell monitor case looks just like the curved back of an iMac though. notice that?

prior to the iMac, all Dell monitors were squared off

"Touch Screen interfaces" are iOS and Android and are leaps and bounds better than the "Touch Screen Interface" in Windows 8.1. Windows 8.1 is hot garbage.

That's nice you feel that way, but the "far ahead" comparisons being made are with OS X and Windows. Do you really want to start comparing Windows to Android and iOS?

Anyone that truly thinks OS X is far ahead of Windows knows very little about Windows, or computer systems period. Maybe those people should be a little more specific as to what features of OS X they think is far ahead, because overall, Windows is a far more developed operating system than OS X. You really can't even compare to the two.

On the contrary, I work in IT and currently completing a masters degree. And I affirm that OS X is ahead of Windows - in stability, reliability, and overall system performance. It's not just a marketing claim by Apple (although they like to push it a bit).

Windows may be a far more developed OS, but it has many drawbacks - registry, infinite amounts of .dlls, and a very bad Metro user interface (obviously, the last one is subjective).

Windows is good for enterprise and gaming - two markets where OS X should not and will never compete in (although gaming is slowly getting there to an extent). Those are the primary reasons that today its market share still remains above OS X. Also, a very important one: Windows runs on almost anything.

However, taking those two markets aside, I see no reason to use Windows unless you REALLY love it. OS X will offer you a much more elegant OS that integrates with the Apple ecosystem (if you own just one iDevice, you know what I mean).

I use Windows for gaming - that's it. All the rest I do in OS X - because it's reliable, 24x7x365. It also has excellent battery life management and sleeps in an instant on a retina Macbook Pro. Try doing that in Windows - won't even get half the battery life (I tried with Power Saver).

I have tons of VMs with many Linux distros for system administration and a couple of Windows versions as well for work. I never have to boot into Bootcamp unless it's for gaming, as virtualization software has become very good. I still remember when you had to swap back and forth between OS X and Windows - a nightmare.

You mean how Android rushes to appropriate any tech that Apple is rumored to do by they leakers. When Apple manages to keep a lid on what they are working on, they are all caught flat footed for years trying to catch up. Remember how Google's Android Chief said Digital Assistants was a bad idea and then when Siri was a hit, here comes Google Now. Even saying Google Now is a copy from the Mac. I have been able to control features on my mac since 2001 by saying "computer" followed by a command.

Sure you can cherry pick examples all you want, both camps can . Point is, all the big companies are copying each other at present.

The fugly windows 8 was the first innovative approach I have seen in years, not good for me, but at least they tried something different.

OS X is better for the desktop environment than Windows.

iOS and Android are better for the tablet environment than Windows. Windows isn't better at anything.

The only reason I even care about Windows is because I test Windows applications for a living.

Awesome job MS

Finally, this looks decent. Dropped aero, got rid of terrible touch metro "microsoft store" fullscreen app stupidity. I might actually want to spend time in this OS other than the purpose of gaming.
What MS should do: implement a *nix kernel and get rid of the abhorrent windows registry.
What Apple should do: give us a laptop with some decent GPU performance with CUDA/OpenCL as well as better shader support (an answer to DirectX like Metal for OSX?). As a gamer and a researcher, Apple has failed me on this front.

I don't really ever use spaces unless i'm really killing it with multiple PDFs or a complicated project...

You cannot be serious.

I can tell you that if a heavily accented english speaking German was asked if he wanted a beer and he said, 'nein', danke, he would not be served with nine beers.

I'm a dual OS user and there are strengths and weaknesses in both operating systems. When either OS improves, I look at it as a win for me.

Same here - have been using Macs at work for more than 15 years, and yet I have never ever had (or wanted to have) a Mac as my home computer.

I am quite used to both OS X and Windows - probably a good bit beyond the average user - but I do not think the differences are significant enough to prefer one over the other.

You could switch my iMac at work with a PC and my portable Thinkpad Carbon X1 (great hardware - love it) with a MacBook tomorrow and it honestly wouldn't matter to me at all.

Windows gets all the good games and best graphics subsystem and drivers. Mac is best at everything else.

When you join the workforce, your opinion will change ;)

There is a large number of users on MR, that require windows on their macs to be productive. Be it boot camp or VM.

And yes, PCs are far superior when it comes to gaming if you into that.

Though I still go back to my origin statement, both Mac or PC have thier pros and cons for everyone.

The only reason I even care about Windows is because I test Windows applications for a living.

And me, because I have to administer Windows machines on a daily basis. If only OS X or Linux were used in enterprise, I would have a much easier life (and my fellow sysadmins too). 90% of tech support complaints I get are about viruses or some error only Windows machines can get ("my Windows update stopped working error code 0x0008bfawhatever").

Yes. 7 8 it.

Bravo, sir. (no sarcasm. I laughed heartily)

What are your thoughts on the .Net Framework? Microsoft agrees about the drawbacks you mentioned. However, they can't force the entire software industry to convert over to .Net.

"You can also now have up to 4 apps snapped now on the same screen" - demonstrates 3 apps snapped.

*facepalm*

I know there's a lot of MS haters here but aside from the Metro Style interface and start screen Windows 8 was rock solid. Windows 8.1 even better. And I have to say Windows 10 looks like it might be a winner when released next year.

I've been using OS X since Leopard and I can honestly say that in the last 3 years there have been more and more persistent bugs. I haven't tried Yosemite yet but I'm hoping it's better than the previous 2 releases.

I don't mind the redesign so much though I didn't really see a need for it. I'm more concerned about stability and not losing useful features that I enjoy now.

Oh, ok. So other than 90% of what users actually see and control, it's a winner!
