What?! Your considering the market share of windows 8.1 against Windows itself and not the entire market???

Reality check - even though windows 8.x was deemed a failure, still has more users than OSX.

Apple would like to have as many users as windows 8.1 - more computers sold.

I wonder how many installations of Windows 8 run an Apple hardware...

Did they drop the registry and get rid of backwards compatibility?

I wish they took a stand and did just that. It would have been a huge step forwards for the whole Windows eco system.

It would probably result in an outcry of biblical proportions if some people could not get their 11 year old perhiperals (...most of which is hooked up but never really used...) or 9 year old customized software to work though.

Multiple desktops... like... the feature Mac OSX has had for years? And all of the great new improvements are just normal old features they brought back. Fullscreen apps open the same way desktop apps do? Woah. Revolutionary.

How do PC users not recognize how far ahead of windows OSX is?

Hate to break to you but...see next comment. He didn't quote you though but it still the same. This is how it is when Apple releases an iPhone. It's been done years ago.

Hope you are not that guy who gets offended when android users point out features we just got that they have had for years.

I'm glad someone said it. :D

A pig with lipstick. It's still a pig.

Don't be ignorant.

And Linux has had multiple desktops for years, WELL before OS X. Blah blah blah, Apple didn't invent the wheel bro.

So, that means if I said it my 16 years in IT doesn't count!? Say it ain't so!!

To their credit, Apple did invent the first point and click user interface and the mouse to go with it... One could argue it was the very first "modern" GUI based OS ever made.

They are working on it. However, if they dropped the registry and backwards compatibility now, they would have plenty of angry software developers. I would be surprised if Microsoft hasn't been working on a registry-free OS for the last 10 years. It may even been completed at some point already. It is obvious that they are moving towards that model with the .Net Framework. It is just a very slow process. They need to get software developers to convert and there are countless numbers of businesses writing in-house or custom applications that have not begun the change.

Quite a few I guess. Which begs the obvious question: Why would anyone do that if OS X is superior in every way? ;)

There is no denying that a 'failed' launch like Windows 8 actually dwarfs the number of OS X installations out there though - there are more Windows 8 installations out there than the number of Macs sold since the beginning of time.

So 'low sales' and 'failure' really needs to be seen in the right perspective. Even a small piece of the total Windows user base is an enormous amount of users, so if you alienate just a few percent of your existing user base that is a huge amount of money walking out the door. Microsoft took a gamble with Windows 8, and sadly it did not work out. I think it unfortunately will be a long time until they try a leap like that again.

I love IOS (iPhone and iPad) but I will admit I am still using Windows 7, yes I am only halfway into the Apple camp ;)

Anyway, I will say if Microsoft can actually pull-off the development of a combined base O/S that is "tailorable" for different platforms like desktops/laptops, tablets, and phones, it will be quite an accomplishment. I will wait and see if/how they do this.

1) Even as a diehard Apple guy, I look forward to trying out W10 in VirtualBox.
2) I do wonder why Microsoft can't or won't be done with the "legacy" NT known as Windows. Make something new, call it Windows to keep the masses calm, and run everything legacy in virtualization. The hardware today doesn't even flinch from that.
3) "Task view" truly is Exposé. That said, I'm glad to see it on Windows. That 3D window scroll was kind of pointless.
4) Windows 11 needs "Sneak Peak," the obvious copy of "Quick Look." Honestly, that's one of My favorite Mac features to date and wish Windows had something like that (natively).

They want to play games, duh. We're people too, you know. Sophisticated and blessed with good taste in OS, but still people. :D

After watching this I feel this is what Windows 8 should have been.

Funny... Everyone said "after seeing windows 7 I feel this is what windows vista should have been."

How some things just never change

Games for the win :D

I use both Windows and OS X on a daily basis - the subtle nuances does not matter much to me, I can do whatever I need to do in my work and private life on both platforms.

So many people comment on things with so much ignorance. Windows is a VERY solid OS, those that say otherwise just don't know or are just blind fanbois. Those of you who hate 8 and 8.1, just install classicshell.net to bring back a proper start button. Arguing over who did what when is just juvenile and adds nothing to the discussion.

The great thing is that each of these systems helps to propel the other to be better and to do more and this benefits us all in the end. Don't hate what you don't know/understand. MS server software is AWESOME and there is nothing like it to manage large scale networks and users.

I am sure Microsoft agrees with this 100%. There are just far too many businesses with software written on the old model. Virtualization is a great way to solve that problem and many people are using it for such, but many businesses do not and Microsoft cannot force them. You have to imagine how many small and medium sized businesses that have in-house custom software that was written 7+ years ago. Heck, I saw that my bank (a large bank) was still running Windows XP a year ago, so what does that tell you? Adoption is a slow and painful process when something isn't broke.

All of them can ! If they want !

That's a ding against Apple for not playing nice across platforms, if anything.

Try running any iWork crap on a Windows machine , oh yeah ....Apple won't allow it, or iMessage...

Because they kinda suck at making friends.

Meanwhile, almost all Microsoft Apps are cross-platform

Go figure

It looks good; Windows 8 grew on me but it's still too schizophrenic IMO.

I also wish I could still grow an emo dreamboy haircut like that.

No. Show me evidence that Apple did just that. Don't be a Fanboy. Get over the Microsoft issue, they are washed out.

Xerox is a public company. So is Apple. Xerox got Apple stock in exchange for th rights to PARC.

Within a few week of this being released, Windows 10 will have more users than OSX.

Apple would love to be in this position.

I'd like Apple to be in this position but windows is still alive and isn't going anywhere - no matter how many people on these forums predict the demise of Microsoft!

Yes and no. Microsoft nets about $90 revenue for each PC sold. Apple about $1200.

...and still people make a big deal out of the OS X upgrades now being 'free', failing to see that they indirectly pay a lot more up front for the OS and upgrades than any Windows user spends on the OS during the same time period.
