That's why Microsoft has to be careful, because they don't know exactly what will happen with 3rd party applications, and possibly their own code.

Yes, but the idea that the name on the shrink wrapped retail box leads to namespace conflicts in system APIs does sound far fetched, I think. If true, then that's a badly designed API.

Lots of software has old code in it. Microsoft recently fixed a vulnerability that affects all versions of Internet Explorer going back to IE 6 (released in 2001). In the Unix world, the recent Bash vulnerability affected every version going back 25 years. Firefox is built off of old Netscape code. OpenSSL supports all kinds of old operating systems and has code left over from the early 2000's.

Codebases aren't purged when they get significantly large because nobody is quite sure whether that will break anything. It's difficult, time consuming work to sift through and figure out what is doing what. Plus, many of the original developers are no longer there, so there's often nobody to consult. That's why Microsoft has to be careful, because they don't know exactly what will happen with 3rd party applications, and possibly their own code.
You are welcome to believe such a silly reason for not naming the next version of Windows, "Windows 9". Even if there were legacy apps that performed the comparison that was stated in reddit, Microsoft doesn't know to what extent that has been used by 3rd party developers and how many of those legacy apps are still in use.

System API calls would NOT be confused, and Microsoft could have certainly had the text string look like "Windows 09" which WOULDN'T confuse the alleged legacy code.

Look, anybody that is seriously trying to say that something as trivial as the name of Windows can break compatibility with applications is as willfully ignorant & absolutely ridiculous as those that claimed that there was a Y2K bug and we all needed to head for the hills. You guys are embarrassing yourselves; PLEASE stop. It's not cute or endearing... it's wince inducing.

Btw, a lot of apps you use are coded for 19 year old operating systems, are they?? You now, personally, believe that you have even one app.. that 1st runs a check to see if you're running Windows 95/98, before it opens?? You're being silly. Any app built in the last ten years is NOT going to have a special "95/98" mode... don't be absurd. Lol, if you believe that if it was called Windows 9 all your modern apps would turn retarded & try to open in 640x480 windows, thinking that you're on Win 95; I can only assume that you threw out canned food in 2000, because you thought it would rot when the can thought it was 1900!! =P

Nope, they (programmers) literally were that stupid.

https://searchcode.com/?q=if(version,startswith("windows+9")

nah we would just call it Windows Neun

… I am going to prepare a funeral for my joke, now that it's been completely murdered by explanations. :D

… Don't be idiotic, just talk like adults - I know that may be a challenge... BUT TRY IT.

Nah, too challenging! 'Try' is for weekday neun to fünf, man … it's Friday night, I've had a hard day grave-digging for lost jokes, time now to let my hair down and to one side for the weekend – I'm ready for a gouple more classes of Nindows Wine

Wow.... You still didn't actually read anything in the original link did you?

You're the problem. Pure and simple. Since 1990 I had two viruses and both were in the nineties and both were my own fault. As for performance you're really making yourself sound silly. Maybe... never mind it's not worth it.

Windows funboys on Apple forums. Gotta love that. Dude, i am an IT professional with a University degree. Not sure about you, but i have more then 20 years in this industry. So talk with with someone that does not know nothing about computing not with me.....

Kind of sensationalistic reply there...if not, perhaps you're the problem? I've had ONE virus in Windows, and I've been a user since Windows 95.
It's pretty simple - stay off the porn, warez, and torrent sites.

Either way, I'll never understand this brand devotion people have - one way or the other. All of these companies exist to make money. There is no idealism in a brand.

Well, i use my computers to pay my bills. So i don't touch anything with porn and so on. But it's funny how windows funboys come to Apple forums to tell us how great windows is. Well, as an IT guy with more then 20 years under my belt and a University degree i can tell you that there is nothing 'rock solid' to this piece of junk. If you want i can dive into details, but you look like a lost cause. Whenever i see statements like: 'i am using windows since ice age and never had one virus(or one, same bul***t)" i know who i am dealing with. I was in a large company(multinational company more precisely) and the network virused every few months. In one attack the 'rock solid' crap os allowed for passwords steal and wiped up entire hard disk against all routers/firewalls etc. Anyone with the smallest knowledge in IT knows this thing: windows is a crap os when it comes to security. So please, keep your false statements for anyone who does not know anything about IT.

You do realize that your response is just as "false" as theirs without some sort of details, right? What year did that happen and with what version of Windows were you having viruses "every month?"

I'm not actually disagreeing with you, but people fail to put these kinds of statements into context.

Windows was and still is the dominant OS for computers. As such, it was extremely vulnerable to attacks as it was logical for spammers and those looking to grab data to attack systems where they could benefit the most. No one could have predicted the onslaught of users and hackers that came about as they internet grew.

Do you really think that if Apple somehow "won" the OS wars back in the early 90's it would not have been them getting all of the viruses?

Ive been using Windows as well since it first came out... and had plenty of issues.... but not one virus or major software malfunction in at least 5 years? It's hard to forget the past, but that's what it is, the past... and a pretty distant past in technology terms.

Sincerely,

An equal opportunity MS/Apple Fanboy ;)

It is rumored that win 10 will be a free upgrade to those with genuine win 8.

Rumors are not facts... as stated earlier, MS will advise in the new year..most likely as part of then" consumer" development version launch.

And I'm dumbfounded by the people on here that don't get the "Windows 9 will be free but they will charge to upgrade to Windows 10" jokes...;)

Hey, whatever. I've moved away from windows as a laptop OS but I do enjoy windows phone so well how this parlays into that. IMO, Microsoft staying valid is important for consumers since it keeps competition alive and well. That's good for us. I like apples products and all that but I do NOT want them to be the only game in town.

Anxiously awaiting how this affects windows phone. :D

I installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview ( not the Enterprise Version ) on a MBP which is "unsupported" by Apple for Windows 8/8.1 running BootCamp ( MBP mid 2010 13", model 7,1 ).

I installed BootCamp though. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1795357/

Beside the OS X partition I have 2 Windows partitions now, the productive with Windows 7 and the testing with Windows 10. I am migrating every single Application and every single Tool I use from W7 to W10, test it and I am surprised how well it works. This build is quite robust ( for me ) already and currently I am looking forward to a final W10 release. No performance decrease, not Blue Screens, whatsoever.

Coming from Windows 7, I have no usability issues at all. It feels like an upgraded Windows 7 :) .

Excellent product so far ( migration and testing is not finished yet ).

You must have a lot of bills needing several computers for paying ;) .

I respect your opinion, however I have a different experience with Windows. Just don't expect you are the only one who knows something about Operating Systems and IT. You should have attended to some communication training at your University in first place, IMO.

Apple's had multiple desktops (Spaces) back in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Welcome, Windows users, to 2007.

Linux had multiple desktops way before that. Welcome Mac users to 1997! But of course it's been part of X under UNIX for decades.

I'm going to say it. I quite like the technical preview. It functions like a desktop operating system should. I have it here on a Windows Laptop from 2007 that originally shipped with XP. It's reasonably fast, and seems pretty stable.

It's no Mac, but it's not bad. Interestingly Yosemite will run on the '09 Whitebook, but only just, I've gone back to Mavericks on here and will go back to PB4 once I get my rMBP repaired.

Your boastful, aggressive attitude don't help you - noone cares about your "years of experience" or University degree, when you talk down to people as if they're less intelligent or valuable than you are. Why do you feel so insecure that you feel you have to bolster your comments with your earthly "achievements"? Noone cares, to be honest. Please - be nice to people, and pay them due consideration. You're not bowed down to as the source of all knowledge - maybe remember that we ALL have different experiences and skills.

Who has what he wasn't given? You were given knowledge, just as we all are.

Every time I turn around, Microsoft is releasing another 'breakthrough' version of their operating system. The philosophy is embedded in renewed hope that one day, they won't release a POS. That said, I've noticed quite a few glitches in iOS lately. Hopefully, Apple isn't going down the same path.

All OS's have bugs upon their initial release, it's impossible to release a new version of an OS on a yearly or even every couple of years adding features without having bugs, it's normal. It's depends on how fast they get fixes. Windows, typically gets yearly Service Packs and it usually takes them 1 or 2, sometimes 3 Service Packs to fix all of the bugs. Apple has been rolling out yearly major releases and they typically release bug fixes every couple of months on average.

With Windows, they haven't quite nailed down their UI, they are getting closer, but the departure to tiles is what's getting them this time. They are trying to create an OS that works well for both desktop and tablet interfaces and it's kind of hard to do that where it works well in both environments. I see Windows 10 as an update to Windows 7 with some integration of tiles added. I don't know how well this is going to be accepted, but they are going to stop selling Windows 7 at some point in time.

I wasn't "given" anything...I went to school and read so I am always learning.

You seem not to understand - EVERYTHING we have is given to us... life, breath, food, skills, gifts, knowledge etc. Everything is given, nothing is our "right" or entitlement.

Who said it was a right? I earned it through hard work.

I get "gifts" on my birthday.

Everyone does, which proves I am right - you are given the gifts, spiritual AND physical. Some people can never play an instrument, some people can play an instrument naturally with no teaching - THAT is a gift of the kind I am talking about, and you probably knew that anyway. ;)

Well you are given the opportunity, but what about the people who have to practice hours a day for ten years. Some things are just plain hard, and take hard work to master.

No one ever said Windows minor upgrades weren't free

Well, I have to quote you then: No free upgrades at all you said, completely ignoring that every main version of Windows have had a longer lifespan than any OS X versions ever. A lot of the upgrades of Windows through the years - within the same version number - have been anything but minor. We are not talking tiny bug fixes here - several of them have brought more new functionality to the OS - still within the same version number and for free - that your average OS X upgrade.

I also find it interesting that you completely ignore that I burst your bubble by documenting that OS X has only had one free upgrade - ever. That is very different than your 'been free for years' argument.

I have been using both Macs and Windows based computers more or less every single day since the 90s and have a very good overview of the cost related to both when it comes to keeping them updated since that have been a part of my job for years.
