Man OneDrive is brutal on the Mac - hard on the battery, fans running all the time - I tried moving everything from Dropbox to OneDrive earlier this year, but it just didn't work out for me.
Turn OFF "files on demand" and it will work quietly and seamlessly.
Files on demand has been terrible ever since first introduced.

EDIT: I have noticed that @derekamoss has disagreed with my comment above. That is just my experience with OneDrive. I have been a OneDrive user for many years and I love the service, however I have never been able to make "File on demand" work properly on my Mac. Every time I switch it on, I get the same symptoms detailed by @jonnysods above. A simple Google will highlight that many other people are experiencing the same problem. All of that said, it is possible that MS could have solved the issue in one of their very latest updates. I have not tried to use FOD for months now as every time I did in the past it did misbehave and it took a long time to restore the situation to normal. To each his own, however it would have been nice to know the reasons for @derekamoss disagreement as there is nothing I would love more than being able to use FOD with OneDrive on my Mac. If you know how to make that happen, please let me know.

For my family of 4, OneDrive has by far been the best deal over the past 4+ years. Usually can score the family plan for around $60 or so each year, stack on the sub. EACH person getting 1 TB storage PLUS all the true MS Office apps across multiple devices is IMO a fantastic value.

Sync is a good alternative to dropbox. In fact if you didn't know better, you'd just say dropbox had changed it's name, very familiar interface.
 
I tried sending files via OD, but it doesn't work well. The files have changed extensions, they are damaged. I'm using DB now and it's ok.
 
For my family of 4, OneDrive has by far been the best deal over the past 4+ years. Usually can score the family plan for around $60 or so each year, stack on the sub. EACH person getting 1 TB storage PLUS all the true MS Office apps across multiple devices is IMO a fantastic value.
Why do I need an Office without the possibility of using it in business?

Same here, the family sub gives everyone more storage than they will ever need plus the ability to install the Office apps on any device they want. It's a subscription I really don't mind paying for.
 
I have a few Office 365 subs I need to use up, but my ultimate plan is to just move to iCloud for all my online storage needs. I really need to keep my files synced between my current Mac and other iOS devices. I am also tired of being nagged.

Apple could at least increase the free base storage to 15 Gb. 5 Gb in 2021 in not enough. Plus the use of cloud storage has increased due to this pandemic. The best time to increase it is now.

Why not just pay for it if you need it?

In the US it's $11.88 per year (3 1/4 cents per day) for 50 GB. That's a bargain!

Contrary to others, you can use hardware and software that aren't from Apple. People actually use Apple and Microsoft products daily and still function perfectly fine.

The base iCloud storage has been 5 GB since 2011(More than 9 years). The base storage of the iPhone released in 2011(iPhone 4s) was 8 GB. Now the base storage of the new iPhone 12 is 64 GB. Even a backup for a single Apple device now takes more than 5 GB.
Most People do not need 50 GB of cloud storage all they need is enough storage to backup their devices. They do not prefer to pay $12 just to backup their devices to the cloud. 15 GB will be enough for this purpose and if they need more storage then they can pay just like you said.

I use OneDrive across all my Apple products, I have 1TB so it works great for me. No issues whatsoever on my M1 machines.

Apple has barely (and I do mean "barely") implemented anything useful on that front.

It's maddening to me that I can't easily tag a folder on the server side to be "cloud only - always" and not have to fight like hell to keep a new device from trying to suck down anything/everything it can get off my iCloud storage online, which has way more on it than most of my devices can hold.

tldr - if Apple would simply improve the Selective Sync on iCloud, the product would increase in value enormously

Me too. Works great on my M1 machines as well. I just wish they'd release a native Apple Silicon update to the app soon. But the Intel version seems to be working fine and smoothly.
 
Reading this article in the context of just receiving notice from Comcast that they've imposed a 1.2TB cap on data on my "gigabit" service (1Gbps down, and a lousy 35Mbps up). That means you could upload 5 files at max size for OneDrive before hitting your limit for a month. How about signing up for DropBox, BackBlaze or CrashPlan to back up your computer to the cloud? Got a lot on your computer? Poof. Online applications of this sort will become limited in use.
 
I utilize OneDrive (free version - 50GB) on my iPhone, iPad & Macbook Pro without any issues and have been pleased with the product. If there comes a time I do need more space than that I'd happily pay for the subscription.
 
Sure, but I don’t understand why Apple doesn’t offer anything between 200gb and 2TB. 500GB or 1TB seems to be the right amount for many people.
The problem is also the free tier that is only a mere 5 GB.

If they want to keep their 5 GB, I'd say it's 5 GB for free per active Apple device that you have in your iCloud account.
Some sort of loyalty program.

Over time, every storage service should increase their allotments, for the same price. Most do it in occasional leaps, like this one by Microsoft.

I was impressed by one website hosting service that increased their customers' storage capacity by a small percentage each day, which is a better match for how most people's storage requirements grow over time.

OneDrive works much better than Google Drive on macOS. Google Drive re-scans all files every time, but OneDrive does the same very occasionally. OneDrive is also compatible with Dark Mode but Google Drive remains damn bright.

Ok, I don't like the sound of that. But, its not surprising, Apple's approach to the cloud is to be dead simple as possible, but at the expense of flexibility and user power. The thing is, OneDrive is advantageous if you are in an open ecosystem: Windows, Android. But I only have one Windows device and don't see myself switching back in the near future. I might pick up a Windows 10X device out of curiosity, but I feel so sealed into the Apple Garden, that I might just go all in regardless of the trade offs.

Yes. My issue is that last time I tried it iCloud was terrible on PC.

That's not really a solution. My MBP doesn't have 5 TB of local storage to download everything.
 
OneDrive works much better than Google Drive on macOS. Google Drive re-scans all files every time, but OneDrive does the same very occasionally. OneDrive is also compatible with Dark Mode but Google Drive remains damn bright.
Also, Google Drive requires downloads of complimentary software (Sheets, etc) and even if you don't use them/delete, they keep coming back.
 
Great news! I use this, just wish Apple could offer a family iCloud subscription at a competitive price to office 365, which is often £40 a year in the UK for family
