We all have different definitions/requirements but for me:
- Apple quality keyboard cover
- USB host support
- support for mouse
- support for active stylus

I'd get closer to the hardware flexibility of the Surface (no complaints with the Surface 2 hardware) but have the richness of quality and quantity of apps.

Interesting ideas, but I don't know if iOS will ever have mouse support or stylus support. Didn't SJ mock the stylus?

Then again, they might do another "about-face", considering SJ hated the idea of a mini iPad.

Why do people keep saying Microsoft is positioning this as an iPad competitor? They're not. In fact Bloomberg claims Microsoft shelved a Surface mini because they didn't think it would differentiate enough from the current tablets on the market. At the event today the target was squarely MacBook Air. I don't care that Microsoft marketing slogan is a tablet that can replace your laptop. Surface Pro is clearly aimed at MacBook Air and Ultrabooks. IMO Surface screws the Windows OEMs that don't have a foothold in Enterprise. Where I work (Fortune 50, 80K employees) we use mostly HP and Dell laptops. I can't see our company swapping those out for a Surface Pro. But I can see where a Windows PC consumer might choose a Surface Pro over an Asus/Acer/Samsung laptop. That could be why some OEMs are going all in on Chromebooks.

Maybe people just don't like it. It's a mac rumors board. You know its more likely the people who are here are going to no like it. That doens't mean your opinion is any more valid than theirs. I think some of you on here like every piece of technology no matter if its actually useful or not. I don't have a use for a hybrid tabTop. I was never going to like it. I appreciate the benefits of each device doing only what it needs to be able to do. I don't have a desire for my tablet to be my laptop and vice versa. I'm not going to like it regardless if Apple releases a version of this or not.

Most of the people I've seen buying these hybrids are technology collectors. They buy it because it exists at all. I have a phone an iPad and a LapTop. I try to keep it simple. Don't knock people for not liking the MSFT tablet on a Mac website. It's pointless.

Why comment then? It gets boring to keep hearing "I won't buy it because it runs windows" or "microsoft sucks", that drivel is even more pointless IMO. It's more interesting to discuss the companies strategies and also for users who are trying to make a decision or be more informed. I would hope a typical Apple user/macrumors forum member would have an open mind, wait did I say that?

Because they don't have much of a clue.

If you hate using a touchscreen, why would you buy an iPad Mini?

Edit: And why is "get out keyboard" and "get out mouse" two separate things? They're in the same area of most computer bags. That'd be like saying that "get power cord out" is part of the set up process for a MBA.

Check e-mails quickly..

That's even worse than the previous guy. You're going to have a laptop and your ipad mini out at the same time? The kickstand seemed pretty idiot proof, like it would take all of 1/2 second to set it, but you never know with people these days. You need a mouse with your laptop also, doh?

Why so serious?

Surface:
1. take the device out of the bag and hold it in one hand so you can see the back
2. use the other hand to open the kickstand
3. put it on the table
4. oops, I was using it in tablet mode last time, so I had the keyboard off.
5. Go back to the bag and get the keyboard
6. pick up device in one hand, snap on the keyboard with the other, set the device back down

That's fiddling around.
Let's not even discuss the stylus.

I wanna play

Macbook Air
1. Take device out of bag
2. Puts it on table
3. I wanna play a game
4. Restart computer
5. Bootcamp to windows
6. I need to jot something down
7. Goes back to backpack
8. Pulls out iPad
9. Tell myself, this is 2mm thinner than the last iPad, $700 well spent
10. Takes notes with fat finger because Jobs said we have 10 styluses
11. Goes to MacRumors circle jerk
12. Posts how $5 software is too expensive and he's not buying Office until they make it free, 5 upvotes
13. Posts how Apple is innovative and Samsung always copies, 20 upvotes
14. Posts that only 3 people will buy a Surface this year, 15 upvotes
15. Sits on couch and plays Flappy Bird for the next 2 hours

They at least were open enough to see what MSFT was offering up and compare it to what Apple has already released. Maybe you should realize that people don't have to draw the same conclusion as you Mr. Openmind.

Some of us use our Macs for "REAL WORK".

That's what smartphones are for.

Screen too small?

No, they're not open enough to see what MSFT was offering. They're open enough to come to a thread about a non-Apple product and spew "I don't like this" in many noncreative ways.

I love my ipad, but if you haven't used the stylus on the surface pros you should really check it out... it's an amazing drawing device, there's nothing like it. I'm seriously considering getting one to replace my macbook air, which is showing its age. If you don't care about drawing on a tablet, I guess there's nothing too special about it.

Not sure who "they" are, I was responding to you complaining about users discussing a Microsoft product on an Apple forum. Mind still open, thanks.

Well... that was my definition of an iPad Pro.... not necessarily something that Apple would produce. :)

Okay.

I assumed that you were putting things you thought might happen. ;)

If they came out with one at WWDC, what would you think they'd really put in it that would make it competitive?

Not true. Some people are always going to say they don't like something for one reason or another. Again that doesn't mean your opinion is more valid than theirs. There isn't a requirement for them to be creative about voicing their dislike for something.

Those prices seem quite high!

I realize it is both a tablet and a laptop, but $799 for the low end model and $1,949 for the top end - and that doesn't even include the accessories ($100+ for the keyboard). Wow.

Sounds like a tough sell, to me.

Wow, that is kinda nice. That's the future of the laptop right there...well, someone's idea of the future of the laptop.

I agree, now in gen 3 its finally looking much better, kinda like the early iPod/iPad/iPhone. The first ones were good but now they are much better.

They might force Apple (and others) to lift their game and we'll get a much better next iPad... same we probably have months before that will happen.

I agree the price is still high but if this was an Apple device there would be cues of people lined up days before the release to get one.

You've been here since 2010, and yet you still can't see a lot of these posts for what they are? Read anything that isn't a topic about an Apple product, you'll find this same type of hatred.

If you like reading e-mails on a 4" screen - but most I guess now have 6" smartphones...

Clearly they were. Otherwise there is no reason for them to comment at all. If people just aren't open to the idea at all, they won't comment at all.

Obviously you are biased.

Well isn't this the right place to be Apple-biased? Honestly, in a world of cyberspace where there are plenty of Apple hating forums I'd like to think that people can feel comfortable and come here and post something positive about Apple and like what they have enough to boast about it, regardless of what the competition offers. People shouldn't have to be burdened with people calling them biased for being enthused.

So what. It's to be expected. You know what you're getting. If you don't like it, maybe a non Apple focused forum would suit your needs better.
