Microsoft today launched a new ad targeting the MacBook Air and comparing the notebook to Lenovo's Yoga 3 Pro convertible laptop. The latest spot, which is titled "Let's Dance", features both laptops side-by-side and highlights the differences between the form and functionality of both.

Microsoft first highlights the thickness of both devices, showing that the MacBook Air is 17mm thick while the Yoga 3 Pro measures in at 13mm thick. Next, both laptops are shown in a "tablet" and "tent" position, showcasing the Yoga 3 Pro's ability to fold back while the MacBook Air is unable to do the same. Microsoft finally highlights the Yoga 3 Pro's touchscreen, which is then shown as a non-feature on the MacBook Air.

The new ad comes after Microsoft launched a new round of Surface Pro 3 ads targeting the MacBook Air in August, which showed off the tablet's versatility and power when compared to Apple's laptop. Microsoft has also released a number of ads comparing its "Cortana" virtual assistant on its Windows Phone platform to Apple's Siri virtual assistant on iOS, showing off the former's ability to integrate with a number of apps and perform contextually-aware tasks.

When is Microsoft going to realise it's not just about the specs... it's about certain details; details like not-crap software on beautifully crafted machines. Giving you the impression someone actually cared about your happiness.

(edit, added "just" for clarification)

Those who cant compete and are taken to the cleaners are the ones who indulges in such practice of mocking and comparing as deep down they know that ...they just cant compete..

Cool ad. Not saying that the Yoga 3 is a better product, but cool ad. You don't necessarily have to insult the competition or their consumers (*cough* Samsung *cough*) to highlight your product.

This ad should only push Apple to do better. :apple:

Lenovo laptops apart from some Thinkpads are cheap rubbish. We no longer use them due to the ridiculous high failure rates on keyboards and USB.

Only annoying thing with the MacBook Air, is actually that you can't flip the screen very far to the back. So can only be used sitting. Standing you have to look like Quasimodo to work with it.

But would i swap my MacBook Air for the Yoga? NOOOO :)

It's an absurd advert. The MacBook Air is a laptop. The yoga thing is a 'hybrid'.

Apple don't sell a hybrid, so there is nothing to compare the yoga thing to.

It's like comparing an estate car with another manufacturer that doesn't have an estate in its range, and comparing it with a non-estate car from their range.

i'm not sure it's ever a good idea to give the competition free publicity...

It’s a combination of both and you know it. Case in point, a beautiful OS is not going to help me accomplish what I want it the specs aren’t up to scratch.

Laptops that turn into tablets just seem so irksome and inconvenient. I'll have a laptop, or a tablet. By having both, you just get a chunky, heavy tablet.

I agree. The ones who already know how OS X is superior to Windows (not to mention the precise symbiosis of hardware and software) should not be influenced by this, but for those "out there" who are only looking at the surface I can see how this ad gives them the impression that Apple is inferior. So it reaches its goal in a not too obtrusive way, which definitely cannot be said about any Samsung ad.

The last moment when the guy touched the MBA and the screen just tilted and discolored was actually pretty impressive, even if it didn't make much sense if you think about it. It's impressive, snappy, diverts your attention from more important things, so actually heads up for this one for Microsoft and Lenovo from the advertising point of view.

Awesome advert, in my opinion at least.
It was fast, informative, funny and stylish.

I've no intention of buying a surface laptop though, but that's just because my rMBP meets all my needs perfectly.
I can imagine if I was an artist though and used Photoshop a lot then the touchscreen could be the thing to make me switch.

Its a shame they needed to compare it to a Macbook, but I guess they are copying the success Samsung has (not) seen by putting their competitors centre stage in all the advertising.

I wonder if the advert was just about the surface laptop it could have been even better. Why not just compare it to a previous Lenovo laptop instead, the thickness difference would have been even greater, and it would have been more relevant to the target audience.

This ad just strikes me a weird. Not impressed. Microsoft can't even ridicule effectively, let alone make software
