I have played with the Yoga 2 at Best Buy, but it seems to me that it is a mediocre laptop and mediocre tablet. I'd get it over a Surface, but when compared the MBA the Air still wins.

I also like the Surface commercials they put out recently. The one where its talking about expandability. The guy says "I have a USB, Mini-DisplayPort, plug away". My first response to that line was "Wow you have one port for external video and only one that would be useful to most people".

It seems MS didn't know what Yosemite was going to look like since it has the Yosemite-style dock but Mavericks background in this commercial.

I'm always impressed: Samsung, Lenovo, Microsoft... all of them consider :apple: as the milestone (iPhone, iPad, MBA) to have a comparison...

It's an absurd advert. The MacBook Air is a laptop. The yoga thing is a 'hybrid'.

Apple don't sell a hybrid, so there is nothing to compare the yoga thing to.

It's like comparing an estate car with another manufacturer that doesn't have an estate in its range, and comparing it with a non-estate car from their range.

Well to be fair, what they'd in effect be saying is "Hey, look how good our estate is, and [other car company] doesn't make one". Nothing wrong with that. Unless all the features of your estate are stupid things that the other car company decided not to do cos they're useless.

I used to have a convertible for a while and I have to say they're brilliant for certain things.

Watching a movie with the screen backwards for one, it's close to your face and you don't have to hold it up the whole time like an iPad. Typing an email without having to fumble with the awkward onscreen keyboard.. The only reason I got rid of it was that it was being recalled for exploding batteries (and Sony stopped making them so I couldn't get a new one).

Windows 8(.1) is quite horrible though... It's a mad twisted mess of two separate OSes with two versions of apps (e.g. Internet Explorer desktop and metro) that don't work together at all. Apple really could improve on that.

I'd love a hybrid MacBook Air / iPad Pro combination, really. I think Apple's really missing the boat there.

One glance and it looks like a Macbook Air cloned in black

Plus those background sounds are garbage.

What brand of hippies make these mycrowsoft ads?

Let's see...last quarter Apple sold more Macs than in any other quarter in history. These ads sure are working out well for Microsoft. :D

Microsoft first highlights the thickness of both devices, showing that the MacBook Air is 17mm thick while the Yoga 3 Pro measures in at 13mm thick.

Anyone care to put the super-thin Lenovo laptop for a BENDGATE test? :D

I bet the Lenovo is very flexible just like a Yoga instructor!

If bendgate is good enough for Apple, it should apply to Apple's competitors too.

Well, Microsoft did double the number of Surfaces Pros sold. And the iPad sales were down.

Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 is a decent machine at a decent price. Comparing it to an Air makes sense.

At the price of the Yoga 3, comparing it to an Air is a misstep - the Air is better value.

Cool advert. But this 'hybrid' solution - where the edges of the screen are being used to hold the device at different angles as well as the keyboard being used as a base - I can't see it being durable.

Also, a lot of what they showed in the ad is gimmicky - who would use the 'tent' view instead? It's unstable, and if you wanted to type, you'd either use the touch screen (keeping hands lifted in the air) or rotate it round into laptop mode.

But most of us don't really give a crap about those "features". I'm not interested in getting my laptop screen smeared with finger prints, and if I need a tablet, I've got a new iPad mini 3 that fills that need very well.

Compared to the recent Samsung ones I think it's a good ad, clearly not for Apple or the MBA, it's just better when they are not sounding condescending like Samsung.

That said if the Yoga is a piece of crap then it doesn't matter, but it would be nice to see Apple bring out a MacBook with touch screen and some way to switch from OS X to iOS and use it as an iPad. I do think the 2 OSs will merge one day, maybe OS X 11?

Harder

Hate to say this but it's becoming harder and harder for me to justify a Mac for my next purchase in a few years. Other than I need it for iOS development and the fact that I hate Windows 8. But from a hardware/value proposition Apple's latest moves show they are getting completely out of control with their Macs lately. Charging ridiculous prices for really fundamentally flawed hardware - in the pursuit of "thinness" above all else.

Oh

This ad just strikes me a weird. Not impressed. Microsoft can't even ridicule effectively, let alone make software

And Apple's done an amazing job with software, lately?

----------

like the concept and idea, but they end of being a jack of all trades and master of none. Ok laptops, but fairly lousy tablets - it was my initial issue with the original Surface. Nice concept that failed the minute I wanted to actually use it as a tablet.

NICE! I want one! But make mine an Apple MacBook Air please. LOL :p

Yoga.. pfft!

I have a pretty cool tablet too ... it's called an iPad. :p

Last thing I want is the two devices combined into one.

I like that Microsoft's comparison ads normally, but this one was off. It compares the MacBook Air: Designed to be a great ultra-thin laptop vs a tablet that's designed to also work as a tablet.

What about the MacBook Air's trackpad? It's battery life? iLife and iWork?

I agree. The ones who already know how OS X is superior to Windows (not to mention the precise symbiosis of hardware and software)

I wouldn't say that OS X is superior to Windows per se. While I prefer OS X for development and design stuff, I still prefer Windows for office related tasks and gaming. And regarding stability: I had fewer issues with Windows 7/8 than with MacOS (Wifi, iCloud, network shares) ;-)

Charging ridiculous prices for really fundamentally flawed hardware - in the pursuit of "thinness" above all else.

The iMac with Retina 5K display is really well priced, especially when you compare it to stand-alone 5K and 4K displays.

The MacBook Air is as affordable as ever.

The Mac mini is even cheaper than before - though admittedly isn't user-upgradable anymore.

Lots of reviewers have said the Mac Pro is cheaper than an equivalently spec'd DIY PC.

So, they aren't charging 'ridiculous prices'... If you're going for pure specs alone (which for some tasks, you might want to do) then a PC often wins.

But consider this: Most Macs come with a multi-touch mouse or trackpad, and every Mac comes with iWork, iLife and an OS which is immune to the vast majority of viruses out there.

Said it once, say it again. These Win 8 Hybrids make horrible tablets.

Microsoft today launched a new ad targeting the MacBook Air and comparing the notebook to Lenovo's Yoga 3 Pro convertible laptop. The latest spot, which is titled "Let's Dance", features both laptops side-by-side and highlights the differences between the form and functionality of both.

YouTube: video
Microsoft first highlights the thickness of both devices, showing that the MacBook Air is 17mm thick while the Yoga 3 Pro measures in at 13mm thick. Next, both laptops are shown in a "tablet" and "tent" position, showcasing the Yoga 3 Pro's ability to fold back while the MacBook Air is unable to do the same. Microsoft finally highlights the Yoga 3 Pro's touchscreen, which is then shown as a non-feature on the MacBook Air.

The new ad comes after Microsoft launched a new round of Surface Pro 3 ads targeting the MacBook Air in August, which showed off the tablet's versatility and power when compared to Apple's laptop. Microsoft has also released a number of ads comparing its "Cortana" virtual assistant on its Windows Phone platform to Apple's Siri virtual assistant on iOS, showing off the former's ability to integrate with a number of apps and perform contextually-aware tasks.

All these Windows Hybrid machines make for an insanely horrible tablet experience. Even the Surface Pro 3. There all bulky as tablets, and Windows has a horrible App ecosystem on Windows 8 Metro. You hardly get any use out of the Metro side of this machine. I feel that until that improves, to me there still just laptops.

I find these product comparison ads to be really pathetic.
Yes, it has some features the MB Air doesnt have, people who buy the Air isnt looking for touch or tablet, but a reliable small laptop of high build quality. Simple as that.

And I even agree that the MB Air is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, its still an amazing laptop. ...and I doubt apple isnt planning on updating it soon anyway.

Microsoft (and samsung) should find another way to convince customers than mocking apple. ANd if not, at least do it with some style like the Mac vs PC adds apple made.
