It's a shame people really don't care about that sort of thing.

These are true statements.

But Microsoft just doesn't have the "cool" factor that Apple does.

iOS 7 is inspired by metro design. not saying that squares and semiopaques backgrounds with median-blur filters are 'cool things' brought by microsoft (nothing that you haven't seeing by years in games) but, Apple took the same path, so i think apple isn't cool.

also bill was cool before apple being cool lol

Multiple accounts. The winning feature for me. iOS should have had support for them ages ago. (And on screen multitasking).

Naah... according the Apple way, you do not need multiple accounts, you need multiple iPads and multiple iPhones

Now seriously. Recently they filled that patent where the fingerprint sensor might fine tune access to iOS. Using the fingerprint for certain tasks (mails/calls history/purchases...) seems a way better deal to enable "sharing" your iOS device than building new accounts.

I personally think it is absolutely stupid something like: "May I use your phone one moment? / Yeah, wait I log in into the Guest user account for you". With a more personal device, that situation can happen way more often.

The multiple accounts thing is definitely an advantage that Windows has over iOS, but marketing their tablet based on the fact is has a kickstand just makes it seem like they're scraping the barrel for things to shout about.

Anyone who cares about having a stand will just buy a case.

My favorite Microsoft ad is the one that's on TV at the moment that's encouraging people to buy a windows tablet and ends with the Sara bareilles song saying "I want to see you be brave"

Yeah. Advertising a specific perk that quite a few people might find actually useful. The morons.

All I'm saying is that it is preposterous to suggest that I'd get
The surface after watching that one advert, and see they have a hands free cooking app.

I hate those passive-aggressive "ours is better that theirs" ads...Not that Apple never done that, but I hope they won't get that low again like those Microsoft/Nokia guys...

They should focus on what's good about the surface2, not about what the ipad lacks (or not) in comparison. When I buy something, I buy it based on that item's OVERALL features, not just the bits the competitor don't have. So the ipad hasn't got a kickstand. Big deal - i buy a case anyway. And showing off an app? What's that about? Show me office, show me it's MS features, not some 3rd party's app :|

Oh, and make the pro cheaper by 50%...

True, the last time I remember when Microsoft was cool was back in 1995 when Gates showed off the Doom 95 port...

But let's be honest here: Apple is no longer cool either, and at least in Europe/Germany the teens are already more interested in other brands and products. Trends and hypes wear out after a while, that's the natural course of things.

That's Your Hope, isn't IT !?

My iPad is my iPad

Multiple accounts. The winning feature for me. iOS should have had support for them ages ago. (And on screen multitasking).

I dont understand why we need to have multiple accounts. I have my iPad, my mom has her iPad, and there is an iMac that everybody at the house uses. I don't want my kids using my iPad. If i want them to have one, i would get one for them. Period.

My iPad is my personal device, and I don't want my kids to be running around with it or maybe dropping it. No. They could implement an guest account, maybe, but its not a killer feature.

And again, its very sad how a company had to mention other products to sell theirs. At least they should do as Apple did with the "I am a Mac" campaign. Make funny, maybe that way people would get interested.

the first ad certainly was the lesser one but the second one showed a feature that ios really needs.

if i recall many of the early ios (iphone maybe most) showcased a lot of 3rd party apps

I dont understand why we need to have multiple accounts.

Because I don't have enough money to buy everybody in the household an iPad. User accounts are useful for keeping my stuff separate from the kids stuff.

I agree but that would you call the get a Mac campaign?
Something Apple hasn't done for years? I mean when's the last time Apple ran an ad on TV or the web that directly went after a competitor? With Microsoft going after both Apple and Google it just shows how insecure the company really is.

Because I don't have enough money to buy everybody in the household an iPad. User accounts are useful for keeping my stuff separate from the kids stuff.

That simply means it's not a device you need. You need a surface device not iPad.

Apple isn't a cheap product...

Because I don't have enough money to buy everybody in the household an iPad. User accounts are useful for keeping my stuff separate from the kids stuff.

Apple has proven a thousand times they are not a company that made cheap products, and they have been just fine. If people don't have enough money to get their products, then there are Surfaces. Again, maybe as an option, but if u want premium products then u have to pay for them. Don't expect Bloomingdales to put their prices down because people don't have money, that's why Walmart exists... That's how the world works...

Exactly!

WRONG.
Given the limited storage (16GB) do you really want to have 2 lots of iTunes music , what about Apps, different users, different iTunes accounts. Who is allowed to use what App, will they have to be duplicated ?

Do you then allow "admin" accounts, but what extra functionality will that give/remove. Does it give you access to remove someone else's music so you can add/delete, if so what other data ( e.g. iWork documents) do you then get access to, be able to delete without their knowledge. What about reminders, alarms, calendars, email, iCloud ? What happens when its password locked ?

Its not as easy as "just add another account", there are a whole pile of considerations that must also be taken into account to make the device still useable and keeping security high
Question: Do you drive a car? I mean, it's really hard. There are pedals (more than one!), and buttons, and a big wheel. It can go backwards AND forwards. You might have to drive in blinding sunlight, or heavy rain. Sometimes you have to fix things on it, or do some work to maintain them so they don't break. Nightmare!!! Probably shouldn't bother trying, it's so many things to think about!

I'm pretty sure Apple could design an OS that could handle multiple accounts. In fact, I think they already have.

----------

Because I don't have enough money to buy everybody in the household an iPad. User accounts are useful for keeping my stuff separate from the kids stuff.

I bought all my kids an iPad, and I still want multiple accounts, on their devices. Admin, and kids.

I agree with these points. I'd like an iPad that somebody else can pick up in my place and can log in as themselves. Their email. Their Facebook. Whatever.

On screen multi-tasking (even two apps displayed at a time would be sufficient).

Again, I think these should be on the iPad only, not the iPhone.

----------

At the end of the day, with what few minor complaints I do have about the iPad.... I don't need any anti-virus software for it. A tablet that still needs Norton's/McAfee/AVG/Avast/Defender type babysitting is still a Windows box, regardless of its shape. NO THANKS!

What stupid idea is to tell people to but more devices? Not everyone wants to waste their money on something I will use 3-5 times a week.

Those commercials get it right, Apple sucks when it comes to iOS 7 accounts. It's a shame.

Well, absolutely stupid of Apple to want you to buy more devices :)

Meanwhile, millions and millions of happy iPad users see Microsoft telling them to buy a Surface tablet because it provides something that they don't care about one bit.

I agree that multi-user would be great.
[...]
the whole login/logout concept is very desktop oriented. iOS devices are meant to be switched on and ready to go with all of your latest updates waiting for you, or notifying you that something you're interested in has happened. This all becomes very muddled when you introduce multiple users.
...which is probably why Apple applied for a patent regarding user identification via fingerprint sensor. Unlike former attempts, which failed due to poor recognition rates, Apple's hard- and software combination seems to work pretty reliably.

I suspect that once the Touch ID sensors become readily available at good yield they'll be in the iPad Air 2, and Apple will implement multiple accounts in a much cleaner way than your typical password screen.

Yep, Apple's recent fingerprint sensor patent application has a lot of entries pertaining to switching and/or recognizing different users.

Such a use is obvious to anyone, and Apple is trying to patent it anyway.

The ego-masturbating obnoxiousness and pointless condescension is so thick and syrupy, it made my teeth hurt just reading it.

You know, he's right and you're wrong. Apple devices aren't so expensive, only the top 1% can afford them. But they are expensive enough that buying 3 or 4 of them, one for each member of a family, might be pushing the budget a little too hard for your average middle class family.

...and middle class families, by the way, make up the vast, vast majority of Apple's userbase. Don't try to convince yourself that Apple products are only for the select few who can afford them. They're not. You don't sell hundreds of millions of devices across the globe by being exclusive to the upper echelons of society. A little convenience via a bog standard basic feature wouldn't hurt anybody.

Anyone notice how Microsoft decreased the brightness of the iPad and changed the screen tint to slightly yellow so the display looks worse than that of the Surface? Specifically see around the 44 second mark. The tint is nothing like what I have on my iPad and all the iPads I've used (iPad 1, iPad Mini, iPad Air).

Why don't they care about it? Because it's not on the iDevices? That's a rather circular way to argue a feature. Millions upon millions of people didn't care one bit about Touch ID until it was unveiled alongside the 5S. Now there are tons of people who'd love to see it on the iPads.

Just because people bought something en masse despite it lacking a feature isn't proof that the feature isn't necessary, nor that it's inclusion wouldn't be appreciated.
