None of this stuff impresses me much, really.

Like a few other people noted already, I just don't find myself using Siri often in the first place. Little "stunts" like Microsoft adding the ability to place an order with any shop selling a certain item, as soon as I get close to it? That doesn't excite me at all. For starters, I give up a lot of control to a relatively dumb machine by doing that. What if I told "Cortana" to order my wife roses as soon as I reached the nearest flower shop, but that shop was charging 3x the going rate for them? What if the store didn't stock the arrangement I wanted and only sold single roses in small glass test tubes? If the answer is, "Well, all it does is put you in contact with the place so you still do the whole transaction yourself?" - then it's no better than me just getting a simple reminder to buy them. If it can do more, then it's liable to do something I don't want at all!

None of these "personal assistants" really have nearly enough A.I. to stand in for something like a concierge service you might pay a monthly fee to use by phone. And the biggest benefit I might get with Siri (ability to do things like send dictated SMS messages while driving, so it's safe and hands-free) is negated by the fact my cellular data connection is very often poor in random places while driving.

I have both Iphone 5S and a Nokia Lumia 1020. Although I like Siri I have to admit Cortana is better in a way that she gives you more features like the one in the ad like "next time my father calls me remind me to ask if my mother feels better" Or automatic traffic allert. The only downside of Cortana is that only work in the US, UK and China so far.

"next time my father calls me remind me to ask if my mother feels better".

Really? You have to be reminded to ask if your mother is feeling better?

Yes. But that's my entire point. It's interesting because it shows how the balance of market share has shifted. It's not news of course, but it's interesting. Edit: I already clarified this in post #147 btw.

Yup. It's almost a complete 180. I wouldn't say Apple's quite the MS of the mobile market, because they have to face healthier competition in comparison. But they're still top dog in that market, with MS being the modest bit player.

Cortana? i mean thats not trying to copy Siri or anything... Microsoft needs to come up with their own ideas instead of trying to copy apple... back in the 80's, the macintosh>Windows, then i mean now we have the Microsoft stores that look just like apple stores, and now this. wow. be original seriously!

All this add really highlights (along with Samsungs) is that Apple is still the bar to which all other companies aspire. Do some of these other phones have better features? Of course they do, yet Apple is still, after all this time, the one to beat.

If comparison to a competitors product is the highest compliment a company can give, why is apple unable to go through a whole wwdc or Idevice release without spending a decent amount of time talking about the shortcomings of Android?

Apple did not invent voice assistants, nor did they develop Siri from scratch. They just bought the company that made Siri.
All smartphone developments across the industry are iterative.
If Apple release a smart watch, will you tell that they copied pebble or Google?

Google Now produces a lot more accurate results for me. I have a non-native English accent.

According to Apple maps, my country is a huge land with 2 or three roads in it. While Google maps shows almost every road and directions, navigations works perfectly.

I still can't believe why I'm still using the iPhone.

Which country are you in? Apple maps is every bit as good as Google where I live in the UK. I would be interested to see your country with only a few roads in Apple maps.

It's a fact that Siri is a joke. It hardly ever works, but still people defend it. I use Google Now on my 4S and it just works better.

At least on your 4S you have the choice to either use Siri or Google Now. You don't have that choice on Android phones.

The name... A feminine name for a voice assistant and showing it in a commercial with another feminine named assistant. Google now is not bad also considering its name isnt like "carla" or something.

Now is better anyways. On ios it isnt integrated at all so it cant do anything besides web searches.

Even the name iPhone was trademarked by Cisco long before Apple released them. Does that mean that everything on it was also just copied and nothing original???

With fans like you, no wonder they patented rectangles with round edges.

Microsoft has been using the Cortana name in AI/assistant form since 2001 though...

Out of all the assistants my favorite is Google Now, mostly because of its card functionality. I just don't care that much about talking to my phone.

Although Google Now is pretty sad in my country, it was awesome when I was travelling in the US.

google now doesn't even have a personality, it's purely an information thing with a female voice

at least you don't have to waste time pronouncing an extra syllable for cortana.

Yeah, we're busy, productive people! We can't be expected to spare the effort or that extra 1/10th of a second saying an extra syllable!

Also, the iPhone is too long a name to pronounce. Everyone keeps asking me what I've got, and I'm sitting here, wasting upwards of 15 seconds out of my day telling people I've got the iPhone 5S. That's 15 seconds I could be doing something else!

I suggest we all start calling it the "pha" instead. One syllable. Easy to remember. THAT'S MARKETING!

:friend points at iPhone:

"Wha got"?

"Pha".

"K".

I like Siri more than google now.
I don't know how it is now, but when I used google now last year with my other android devices (HTC One and Note 3) I felt it was a bit chaotic and not clean enough.
It is clearly more powerful than Siri, but it doesn't feel so clean like Siri.
Also I like that Siri has a personality. This motivates me more to use it, and yeah I use it a lot.

Just wait for iOS8, SIRI gets a lot more powerful then ;)
I will still miss using multiple languages for dictation though. With google now dictation I could easily use English or German, but with Siri I still need to switch her from one language to another in the Settings Menu, instead of having that switch button on the keyboard like in Android.

Oh and concerning Cortana, I love GLADoS a lot more and would love to have her as a voice assistant ;)

I dunno why in every thread there are people on this forums who's response to every post is "Apple is the lame Google FTW". Why are there so many Apple haters on an APPLE forums? Do you people seriously have nothing better to do with your lives?

I've been using Siri in iOS 8. Having used Google Now, Cortana, and S-Voice as well, I'd have to say that iOS 8 Siri has by far the most natural voice and is the most useful of all platforms.

I have to admit, I like Cortana a lot - I got WP 8.1 on my Lumia 1520. I really like this phone and ecosystem. And you have to admit, that at least Microsoft didn't blatantly copy the iPhone like Google did with Android. The Live Tiles, etc. are a different take on the Smartphone UI concept. I like it a lot, after being an iPhone user since iPhone 1 (just gave the 5S to my wife).

This does remind me of the Mac vs. PC commercials a lot more than the Samsung ads, which are just insulting.

We are blessed to have so many choices in our devices these days!

Well, I hope the commercial really angers the Apple folks. Might make them speed up and release updates to Siri all the sooner!

So, thank you Microsoft!

Yep, Cortana is a copy of Siri. Except it works better. After all, it doesn't matter who comes up with the idea, it's who implements it the best. Or at least that's what I read here when Apple uses someone else's idea.

Interesting how the tables have turned on the Mac vs PC commercials. It's now Microsoft that makes them.

that's because only an underdog needs to use this sort of advertising (attacking the market leader). apple is the undisputed market leader.

Siri is the worst. doesnt even give you a chance to think of what you wanna say while you are at it without being thrown off with gibberish

google now is more smooth in that area even tho i disabled both asap. no use for it as you end up spell checking and correcting stuff that takes longer than just typing it yourself

1) you can hold the home button as you issue a command for as long as you like.

2) For me Siri is best for short texts and reminders issued as I'm walking, using the phone one-handed. works very well and much faster than typing one-handed. the longer I dictate the more I may have to fix, which adds to total time but can still be shorter. it really all depends.
