Microsoft Launches New Outlook for Mac, Next Office for Mac Suite Coming in Second Half of 2015

It looks like it is still missing the biggest problem with all versions of Mac Outlook / Entourage going back since the Classic >> OS X conversion: native MAPI protocol to talk to exchange.

It's still a glorified web front end for Outlook Web Access, and suffers from the same issues.

Outlook for Mac back in the day actually used MAPI, the same as Windows. Why can't we have this?

Native MAPI is dead. What I expect is proper support for Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTPs), and MAPI HTTP (new since Exchange 2013 SP1). Outlook for Mac uses EWS for connecting to Exchange and that interface has many limitations..This is the biggest problem.

Office 2015

What would possibly be the improvement to the existing suite? A new splash screen perhaps?
I bet they add a hundred new buttons and move useful things deep inside the labyrinth of secret doors and passageways they construct for no apparent reason.
I bet you still only have the basic super saturated 6 colors to highlight text with. You know, the colors that print so dark you can't read the text underneath?
Maybe you get a free Zune with every upgrade. They have got to have a warehouse full of them.

Downloaded and installed it but for some reason can't connect to my exchange server for work. It works fine on Office 2011. WTF

blogs.office.com said:
Office 365 commercial and consumer subscribers will get the next version at no additional cost, and we will release a perpetual license of Office for Mac in the same timeframe.

Phew, looks like they got the message that the subscription doesn't work for everyone, thank goodness. Although I guess we have to wait and see if the pricing is proportionate or punitive for the perpetual licence (that was a tongue-twister!).

I could manage without Office altogether these days, but sadly that it not true for everyone I work with.

This is ridiculous. Only available to Office 365 subscribers? What about users with Enterprise Agreements for Office 2011 for the Mac? We paid good money for the product and to have MS withhold this upgrade from us is unconscionable.

Did you launch Outlook by clicking on the icon in the dock? That will launch the 2011 version. To launch the new Outlook for Mac, you can either do it from Launchpad, search for it using Spotlight, or go to the Applications folder in Finder and launch it from there.

I don't have 2011 installed. And I definitely have the right version, I'm not saying it's identical to 2011 I'm just saying that there's not really that many improvements in the interface if any at all really

Anybody know where it stores it's database locally? I don't think it's using the same database as 2011 did (I'm not seeing file date changes).

You specifically have to have an Office 365 subscription that includes Office as well. We utilize Enterprise E1 here and have separate licenses for Office and we can't get it.

Same here. I have an O365 account from my old company that was recently acquired, but we'll be shutting it down soon so it wouldn't last very long. Our new company has the Enterprise agreement, just checked the volume licensing portal and it's not there.

Does this mean they will finally fix OneNote? It's laggy and lacking in features on the Mac.

They've been incrementally updating it. There was a release just within the last week or so that added some new functionality to it. It's still nowhere near on par with the Windows version but it's slowly getting better at least.

Uninstalled already. Pretty much looks the same as 2008 (bad fonts, same functionality). Just feels faster. I guess I was hoping more like Office365 web version.

It looks absolutely nothing like the 2011 version, unfortunately. It's a copy of the ugly-ass Windows 2013 version.

I got it installed and connected to my account, but it won't activate for some reason. Doesn't even give me an error.

I'll answer my own question.....looks like it's in ~Library/Group Containers

So guessing we can remove old database?

Looks very nice. I won't use it though; I won't do software as a service on principle & won't until I have no other choice. Come on Office 2015.

We are in an enterprise agreement with O365 and are receiving access next week.

This outlook upgrade is a very welcome update for us mainly because it removes the horrendous flat file database that Outlook 2011 used to store mail identifies.

The database often became corrupted and had to be rebuilt. When the MS reps were on our campus last year, they specifically told us they would do away with this and thank god they have.

Having to wait 30 mins for the database to rebuild has been a terror for our users.

Honestly they all suck so bad, I have uninstalled office in general a long time ago. I do use the web version of office365, because it's kind of decent, but otherwise mac mail, mac calendar, etc... so far in yosemite, i don't have any issues.

We have O365. Downloaded and installed. You can connect to a local Exchange host, just choose the 365 option, and then put in your username/password, and it'll find it.

Overall, meh. To me it looks like a polished up version of 2011 from a UI standpoint. Everything else looks and functions the same as 2011. Not impressed really.

YES!! That's what I said. 2011, just slightly different look. Otherwise identical. People keep telling me that it's totally different. It's not.
