From experience SP3 is more lap competent since I can recline back in chair with legs straightened out and it doesn't tip over backwards without putting weight on keyboard with hands like traditional clam shell laptops. Another benefit is health related for men as whatever little heat is exhausted out the top and not directed at your crotch area.

I wonder when MS will figure it out. Their new ad seems ok, but they need to get rid of the chunky and clunky feeling.

They also need to redesign the OS.

1) Make it easily upgradable without have to reinstall and setup everything.
2) Make it so that it doesn't bog down badly over time
3) Redesign this registry idea, it's a nightmare
4) Make apps an island to themselves - stop making everything rely on everything else
5) Get more performance consistency

It has been in the back of my mind for a while now, but I've finally gone ahead and purchased a Surface Pro 3 to replace my primary mobile computer. So far I really like it and am really excited about it. Five years ago I never would have thought I would be excited about a Microsoft product, and here I am now feeling excited about it. It's not perfect, for example the issue of fuzzy text with some applications due to Windows 8.1's inferiority when it comes to very high resolution screens. But overall, I am really impressed with the overall quality and out of the box experience. The pen-based input with OneNote is really cool!

1. We'll see how things pan out with Windows 10, but the 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade works very smoothly and doesn't require any of these things.
2. Windows 8 has a lower resource footprint compared to Windows 7 and Vista. I haven't seen this problem at all after using Windows 8 for over two years at work.
3. I won't disagree here ;-)
4. Not sure quite what you mean here. Could you elaborate?
5. See #2.

the software on the Mac side zooms ahead here with RAM compression allowing for theoretically 6GB of data to be used within a 4GB stick.

That's not quite how ram compression works. Any memory resident data that's being actively compressed is data that isn't being directly used, nor has been used for a bit. Once you start using it, it's no longer compressed. There are definite advantages to it, but it won't make 4GB of ram act like 6GB.

On the Window Start menu, type 'Ease' and select 'Ease of Access Center'. In the ease of access center, select 'Make the mouse easier to use'. Under the section 'Make it easier to manage windows' check the option 'Activate a windows by hovering over it with the mouse'

This it will select the window you are hovering over as the the active window that you can then scroll in. I personally hate this and would rather select the window I want to work with via a click, but I have several co-workers who love it. To each their own, hope it helps!

Thanks, this did help quite a bit. Not quite as instantaneous as on a mac, but at least the click isn't necessary, lol. Yay!

1. I still tend to consider 8 => 8.1 more of a service pack. After the upgrade my computer also became immediately slower, especially the replacement metro start menu. (8.1 vs 8.0 metro menu). Sadly there are still drivers not running properly on 8/8.1. My laptop will no longer dim. It's either on at >50 or off at <50.
2. After time the OS becomes less and less stable after app installs and there's no easy way to recover other than a reinstall. No matter how many apps you uninstall, how many services your turn off, how many cleanings and tweakings, you don't really get back to optimal performance.
4. I mean it would be nice if apps were more portable and not built with roots stretching all over the PC. Everything is referring to everything else and it's a mess. I just feel there must be a better way, where apps can be more self-contained. The registry doesn't really help the matter here either. How nice would it be if we could just drag the app folder from one pc to another and everything just worked? Reinstall the OS? Easy, just copy the app folders you want and everything is ready, settings and everything backed up.

This isn't a TV show, you're allowed to reference stores by their real names on this forum. :p

I wasn't being all serious

Cool story. I'm sure that most of them are broken out of the box and that Fry's sells so many of them that it is the most returned item they sell. Any more stories like this? I'm all ears.

Only our local store. I don't know rest, of course.. durp durr

This story reminds me of "this one time at bandcamp ......."

I'm sure you'd like to end the "band camp" way.

Do you mind asking him why are they really returned (other than broken out of box)? Some very specific details will be really nice, (e.g. speed, did not like OS, touch screen not as good, blue screen of death).

I don't know, didn't get into that far of details. Mainly manufacturing mistakes with the fit and finish.
