I'm still waiting for this magical apple tv, or magical tv subscription service, or magical cheap iPhone .. The only new thing coming out of apple is hot air.

because all they do well is tell time.

Smart watches aren't popular because they are hard to use for how little they do.

Remember what Apple does well? (Hint: human interfaces)

You'll buy one after you smack your palm against your forehead.

Well back in the day phones only did one thing well, make calls. Now the phones are pretty much PC's that make calls. My point is today watches only tell the time well. But in the future with a few smart heads on the project you don't know what is possible.

If Apple morphed an iPod shuffle into an iWatch. So it told the time and played music, had radio etc etc. And you listened to it with bluetooth (or some form of wireless) headphones, that would be very nice actually. So good I'd be tempted to get one.

Samsung already released hassmartwatches
Google (Motorola) already hasreleased smartwatches
Microsoft (partnering with Suunto and Fossil) already hasreleased smartwatches
Sony already hasreleased smartwatches
LG already has released smartwatches

Who else in the race? Applecopy?

You know that these are shots in the dark to see if any thing hits. So far nothing has hit. Agree?

Next, apple releases what will from then on be the measuring standard for years and decades to come. At that point, every one claims 'convergence of design' and every one (specially samedung) will copy apple.

Next chapter will be judges claiming that the apple design, which does not exist yet, is 'obvious' and proceeds to invalidate apple's design.

If the winner of the race is who can design the clunkiest, ugliest smart watch only a dork would wear, MS already has a leg up. Seriously, their design skills are lacking, and their ability to touch hipness, judging from their inane Surface add, is lost in a deep void. (Do stylus tapping, tablet dock clicking office workers really appeal to any demographic?)

It's all a ruse by Apple to distract the other companies and make them devote resources to a product that won't have an impact. Meanwhile Apple is working on something and keeping it super secret that'll blow us away and no one saw it coming.

Yes, but is apple's hot air, and every one -including you- is still paying attention.

Nice history, fiction, but good enough

At home, I wear one of several old Timex windup watches that I bought on eBay. I read an article that stated that old mechanical watches are becoming popular again because they are so simple and well, mechanical. Sure they need winding and adjusting once a day but they are still fun to wear just like when I was a kid.

Just had this idea: Since lots of ideas for smart watches involve huge power consumption (compared to a plain quartz watch) with possible very reduced battery life, what about a wind up watch? Here's the idea: The smart watch should be designed so that it can last quite long if it is only displaying the time. Other functions may take more power. If the battery goes down to say 20% all other functions get turned off, so it still displays the time for ages. If you want the smart functions, just wind it up. Should be designed so that winding it up once in the morning is enough.

Remember when Microsoft, google and Samsung were talking about their future in smart watch BEFORE learning Apple was working on one?

Me neither.

I can see the next keynote where Tim comes out and says Apple never had plans for a watch... It was just his idea of trolling.

I have noticed more that this site posts rumors/news about anything or any competitor to Apple.
Yep and a lot of legal and advertising articles put on this website too. Just stuff we've all come to accept over the years. (accept but not agree with).

Basic economics...

First Apple built computers. They were big expensive boxes, then the made phones. These were cheaper and smaller and next wil be watches. They will be cheaper and smaller than phones

At each step downward the number of units sold goes up dramatically. Apple will follow the numbers but, I as a customer would prefer to see Apple smaller and go back to serving creative professionals

Every time they go after more unit sales they dumb down and cheapen the product. Notice the move to glossy screens.

Expect in 10 years the "smart earring"

Normal people deserve technology too. Tech is supposed to be personal and transparent to everyone, not just for "creative professional" or creating barriers.

Regardless of opinion, these things will sell.

Will I own one? Can't say. In the early eighties, my father read that every home would have a computer. He turned to my mother and said, "We'll never own a computer." They have three PC's and a Mac Pro. When the iPad came out, I told my wife, "It's a giant iPod. We'll never own one." Now we have five. You see where I'm going with this?

With all the companies putting effort into these watches, it'll become the norm, just as smartphones have.

Microsoft, Google and Samsung already had released smartwatches. I didn't know that Apple has officially said that they are working on one

I wonder how many products "in-development" at Apple are actually fake and leaked by Apple just so all other copy-cat companies dilute their resources trying to make such products while Apple focuses on a few still.

For example, Apple leaks that they are working on iTV, iWatch, iRadio, iRing, iSneakers, and iRefrigerator while they are ONLY working on the iWatch. :)

Here's a leaked photo of Microsoft's new smart watch!
