Well since it's useless to you might as well not bother for the billions of users it would be useful for.
Lol, Billions. Also, my opinion doesn't invalidate everyone else's use case. So not sure how you're drawing that conclusion. Nowhere did I say it was useless for anyone else.

THere's only 1.4 Billion windows devices active. Out of that how many are using Iphones. :shrug. millions maybe. And how many of them are going to use this? When I was using Windows only I too wanted this feature. But then I added mac computer back to my devices. But then they have MX Keyboard and probably others that can easily connect to your iphone or ipad and text that way too. I can switch back and forth easily with the MX Keys.

Oh no, Windows users aren't subject to low-contrast, accessibility-unfriendly, punitive color schemes to try to manipulate users into badgering their friends to switch phone brands.
Just use the accessibility settings on the phone for your higher contrast needs?

The big thing that is lacking support is the encryption. I am surprised Macrumors didn’t mention it.
As others have mentioned, encryption isn’t affected.

If the messages are being displayed, it has access to them.
How do you know? Do you know the details of the API used?

Using Mac OS, it’s handy to be able to respond to messages or answer phone calls from any of my devices… Laptops, iMac, phone, iPad, Apple watch.
(Rather than always having to scurry around looking for the phone.)
Also, there are plenty of times I’m sitting at the computer and find something which I like to copy and paste or send a link etc using iMessage. It’s very convenient.
This windows implementation is obviously sub par.

I have been waiting for this for as long as we have had Windows 10. I am a major beta tester for Microsoft and have not yet been offered the test. But as soon as I saw this article, I checked my Windows laptop and checked to see if it is available. This is going to make a huge difference for iPhone users that also use Windows. I have a group of Windows computers on my desk with two different Macs sitting right next to them. The only thing I miss on my windows computers is the ability to interact with my iPhone.

Ok, I am good, I have no use for this lol.

They made this super useless lol. This won't make me switch to Windows because I want to be able to send iMessages wirelessly in the middle of school.
This isn't really isn't meant to make people switch. Some people have no choice but to use Windows computer and this tool at least helps those people send messages on their PC while they are working which is a lot more efficient for most than typing them on a phone.

Of course it’s a biased viewpoint. Very biased based on Microsoft’s history. If the messages are being displayed, it has access to them.
You said all messages which is simply not true. The implementation only has access to messages that iOS opts to pass along via notifications which is why there are so many limitations. Any previously existing conversations are not visible and group conversations are impossible. There is no data mining going on.

“lack of support for group chats, photos, videos, and conversation history beyond the current chat session”

Yup it’s Microsoft…

No thanks I don’t want Windows to have access to all my text messages.

Of course it’s a biased viewpoint. Very biased based on Microsoft’s history. If the messages are being displayed, it has access to them.

It literally doesn't have access to the messages unless the messages come in while the phone is connected to the PC. Just like how a third-party smartwatch or vehicle head-unit has access to message notifications. This is an Apple limitation.

Is this really common in some circles? I've heard people talk about this but I've never actually seen someone give someone a hard time about their messages being green or blue. I certainly don't give a crap; sure it's slightly less convenient to not see "Delivered" but as long as they get the message that's what matters.
If anything, I actually get teased for being an Apple fanboi… LOL!

Too limited. I wouldn’t care about the history of chat but do like sending images, screenshots etc, so I’ll just carry on using the Telegram app for Windows for now. Windows 11 is also lacking some functionality I like in windows 10 so it’ll be a while…

iMessage on Macintosh is far more functional and beautiful and has been like that for years, and the iPhone doesn't even need to be connected to the Mac.

Yes since Apple leverages iCloud, which Apple could do on Windows too while requiring a paid iCloud account if they so choose….but they don’t.

I don’t use a combo of Windows-based PC and an iPhone, so I struggle to see the point here. From what I can tell, I’d probably just use my iPhone for messages and calls as opposed to barely doing so on my PC.
Good for you. I have been using this via Unison for the past month or so, since intel has the unison figured out. Just because YOU don't use a pc/iphone combo does not mean NOBODY in the world doesn't. Actually, there are more that do than don't at this point. It works fine. I can send and receive messages via my pc, answer and make calls so I don't have to pick up my phone. It's quite refreshing while doing a bunch of work on my PC not to have to pick up my phone. Do you need to see a blue bubble before responding to a message? If so, Your life must be AMAZING.

I would actually enjoy proper Mac OS like iMessages functionality in Windows. So this could have been great news, but of course it is Windows 11 only and limited support.

Apple already has access to this...and it only lacks this support because of Apples lame closed door approach. BTW, apple is like santa, you don't know he's watching but he always is...taking notes.

We know how Apple is with the walled garden approach.
Yeah it's pretty sad. Their logic with regards to iMessage is to withhold the ability to interact with one of their valued services in order to sway people to consider purchasing their more expensive hardware rather than making said service more appealing by supporting more platforms. Hope that's working out for them, must be since they're so successful.

All messages appear as gray bubbles in the Phone Link app, meaning iMessages and SMS text messages cannot be differentiated on a PC

I doubt the privacy with Microsoft. I could be wrong.

Apple will kill this in a software update.
No they won’t, they have to allow it, it’s already part of the EU Digital Market Act.

They will even have to extend and create an API in the next few years.

2. The gatekeeper shall make at least the following basic functionalities referred to in paragraph 1 interoperable where the gatekeeper itself provides those functionalities to its own end users:

3. The level of security, including the end-to-end encryption, where applicable, that the gatekeeper provides to its own end users shall be preserved across the interoperable services.
4. The gatekeeper shall publish a reference offer laying down the technical details and general terms and conditions of interoperability with its number-independent interpersonal communications services, including the necessary details on the level of security and end-to-end encryption. The gatekeeper shall publish that reference offer within the period laid down in Article 3(10) and update it where necessary.
