I have a MBP mid 2010 with office on it , it functions (with the understood proviso that I refrain from the cloud - by choice)

edited because spell checker decided Lower case MBP should have been map - got to love spell checkers

Next Microsoft is going to blur all the text in documents and charge per word to un-blur it. Shoot, maybe I just gave them the idea.

So people paid for an open-ended licence, but Microsoft decided "**** you", and nukes them?

Nice work, Microsoft. Really doing a good PR job just now. 🙄
Wow damn and I was thinking of buying Microsoft word and excel outright 😒, the heck we paid for it! I know someone who paid for excel too but I think it’s the 2021 version. But it’s only a matter of time.

Don't act like Apple does not do this as well. I paid for aperture 2 and when I went to download it when I got another mac, they said no. But I said I paid full price for the download and apple said, TOO BAD. It's the same everywhere.

Nice one Microsoft. Downright thievery. Something is very wrong with the software industry today. I would have thought that if you bought a product, it was yours to use as long as you wanted, understanding, in the software world, that updates would not be forthcoming after a while or that compatibility with current OS and printers etc. may lapse. But to disable it sounds like utter nonsense. Imagine if we bought a car and when it could no longer be serviced by a dealer that it stopped working..... I am almost speechless by this behavior.

Imagine if I bought a photo editing program digitally from another company that rhymes with whapple, for 499.00 at the time. then went to download it into a new mac after they discontinued the product and said NO. It's like I almost burned 500 dollars into nothing. Be speechless by this behavior, but don't think MS is the only one that has ever done this. Aperture falls into the same category only way more expensive. Oh, they discontinued it only one year later, not 7 years like Microsoft.

yeah sounds like a lawsuit is coming, it's ok to stop support and to make it clear the risk of not having security updates but to block it, that's a no.

I have 2021 (not impacted by this) but I don't see any desire to upgrade to 2024 it just works and that's what matters.
I have 2021, then upgraded to 2024 because I like to keep up with tech, but Outlook 2024 wouldn't load hotmail email older than 6 months (older gmail loaded just fine). This was a major issue for me. Lost stuff included flight information from flights purchased way in advance.

Anyway, I downgraded back to 2021 (which was a huge effort) and have no plans to return to 2024.

From the article…“Office 2021 will only receive updates until October 13, 2026, when it too reaches the end of support.”

What system requirement for Office 2024 for Mac do you think would keep any Mac from the last 10 years from working with it? Intel or Apple Silicon, 4GB RAM or more, 10GB free space and 1280x800 minimum screen res. What Mac won't this work on?

I believe Office 2024 for Mac requires MacOS Sonoma for new installs (which if current policies persists, will soon mean Sequoia).

Sonoma drops support for Mac Mini and MacBook Air/Pro purchased prior to 2018 and iMac purchased prior to 2019. All of those are less than 10 years old.

And why does it matter that a setup is 10 years old? We're not talking about compatibility with new software. These are existing, working configurations of hardware and software that people purchased outright. Even if they were 10 years old they shouldn't stop working with the only fix to buy a new version of Office that requires a new version of MacOS that requires new laptop/desktop. Especially when Office has been basically the same program for 99% of people since 2007/2010.

Strict operating system requirements. 2024 requires Ventura or later, though the first release worked with Monterey

diff

Difference being of course that the latest versions of MacOS and their Pages app etc are available for free for upgrade.

If you keep up with the hardware versions to run them. And your other software keeps up with the annual updates to MacOS.

I have gotten used to Numbers for basic spreadsheets, Pages works fine I kind of like it! I never installed the Office 2021 I bought for ($40?) and I am happy to say no more Microsoft.
