I just hope this inspires Apple to pull their sh?t together on iWork. It needs a huge improvement across the suite and the cloud.

And no Microsoft, I'm not doing a subscription for your software. It's not that I'm cheap, but $100 forever is not worth it in an age where there are great substitute product that don't require to pay MS forever.

downloading is not the same as paying for it ...

I also downloaded it to give it a try, just to see what they came up with. But actually, you can't do anything with it without paying. Officially you can 'read' documents, but only if you have the microsoft drive (or however they call it) - there are no other ways of getting documents in there. I know I can only read, but sort of was hoping to have some decent ways of getting documents in there to read.

So yes, I downloaded, found out that not usable (even for a quick try out) and deleted.

To bad they don't have a measure for the most deleted app .....

- Actually, whichever compatible file you can find in another app, you can open in Word and any other app associated with that particular file type. For instance, if you find a Word document online, you can tap "Open In" in Safari and choose Microsoft Word.

Ok , i want to scream it. I CANNOT WORK ON TABLET OFFICE SUIT.

I had to work on a manuscript while I was traveling. With a wireless keyboard and my iPad, I had no problems with Pages. I completed about 1/4 of the manuscript on a train. So I, for one, can work on a tablet office suit. :)

Something that I was thinking about regarding Office on the iPad: remember when Jobs was thrilled to have Bill Gates providing software for the original Mac? Microsoft helped keep Apple afloat for many years. Now it's as if the tables have turned and Apple is providing a revenue stream for MS. Obviously, MS isn't in the dire straits that Apple was decades ago. But it's interesting how the tech industry has changed.

Funny.

I thought Microsoft was way too late to the party to have such a popular app.

Yes. It's "free" to download.

But it's also not $99 specifically to use the app.

For one - if you already subscribe to Office 365, it's free with no additional fees.

Students get a HUGE discount on 4 years of service.

And so on.

Lots of bitter people over silliness. Don't want to use Office on the iPad - then don't. The need to ridicule the app or Microsoft for having a revenue model is ridiculous.
You speak the truth man, I won't repeat myself but SaaS, whether we want it or not, is the future

Welcome to cloud, naysayers

I agree twice. The new iWork for Mac is a step backwards. It's all rubber-bandy and has that stupid format box over on the right.

How about putting the formatting back at the top where word processor writers and spreadsheet users expect it? Quit trying to be different and just be great.

I'll be using Office 2010 and 2011 for quite a while as I have no interest in renting software.

And then got deleted by thousands of people when they discovered it's $99.99/year.

People son't have to download the app to "find out" it has $99 annual subscription. This article says clearly Office for iPad is subscription based.

Or you can also read app description in the AppStore, which clearly says it offers in app purchase which is $99/year.

I must admit Office is de facto for professionals and business. You see iWork can convert/open MS Office documents to appeal to customers, not the other way around

Table have turned indeed ;)

The irony of your comment is that the person who posted that nonsense obviously didn't read that on the top grossing apps - these are in spots 4 or 5. So how would you expect him to have read or expect others to read an app description ;)

can i use those if i can get office 365 for free through my university?

Not unless you have your university's email and password login for their office 365 account

Which I HIGHLY doubt they make available to it's students

It's also near the top of the grossing charts which means people are subscribing/paying

arn

maybe the chart algorithm takes into account $ and not IAP quantity purchases? One $99 sub is the same as 99 people buying a $1 app.

Wow everyone on this thread are the biggest haters. Yes it's expensive if you are using it for 1 ipad. But that's not what office 365 is meant for. Office for 5 computers/ iPads.. If you take full advantage of it, it is well worth it.

And dare I say - you also can't always put a price tag on productivity. If you're a sales rep and have the ability to create/edit a PPT deck last minute before you head into a client because some scenario changed - that "$99" would be insignificant. There are dozens of scenarios which make $99 seems ridiculously cheap in the long run.

That's in addition to what you said.

How is it outdated? The only thing that's arguably more up to date in any other package is Google Doc's realtime collaboration tools. For design, everything that iWork can do can be done just as well in Office.

Of course there's Scrivener, but it handles an entirely different task set, and is really a one of a kind type of application. It's meant to more for writing and research tool, less layout.

Word can't handle any images without messing up the formatting, and it still has performance, compatibility, and security problems that should have been fixed in 1998. Excel is still the best thing for spreadsheets I think. The most outdated thing about Office is the pricing now that there are so many alternatives.

----------

Today, we don't accept or use any Office files. If someone applies for a job citing Office skills, we think 'amateur and out of date' and reject them.

Business is up. Profits are up because of efficiency, and people using smart software to do smart things. Dumping Microsoft was the best business move we ever made.

I think business is up because the economy is up. Also, you mean that you reject people for ONLY citing Office skills, right? Not like you'd reject someone for knowing how to use Office

Also, it wouldn't count people who bought Office 365 outside of an IAP, right? There's no way for Apple to do that unless they've got a special deal with MS.

I'd like to see some stats detailing how many people actually subscribed to Office 365 through the Office iPad Apps.

All new iPads come with iWorks, so why would anyone go out of their way to pay for Office 365?!

This is so not a bad thing. Personally, I'm so far past MS and I think this release is far too little far too late, but for the iPad I think it's a great thing. It's the top office productivity suite, and now it's on the iPad, which is a huge validation of the platform, but also, it signals either a turn or a recognition of a turn that the iPad isn't the consumption only device that some insist that it is. It's a good thing, even though I'll never use the MS Office suite again, I welcome this.

If it's MS or Google, you will get haters here, mostly.

I suppose they wished it was free, like Apple's offering, not realizing that those apps were only made free as a direct reps one to the upcoming MS Office. For the most part, they also don't hold a candle to Microsoft's offering. I tried them out and deleted all but iPhoto and iMovie. Those are arguably not even part of the suite though.

If you have a Microsoft Store near you, they are giving away Office 365 free to the first 50 people who bring in an iPad and ask. This is the full version one year subscription. They give you a product key to use for the download and you have to download it to your Mac or PC first.

Many colleges and universities include Office 365 with your .edu email address. That's the only reason I downloaded Word for iPad. Most profs want a .docx for assignments anyways. They've never heard of PDF :p

Thanks to Adobe for making the worst PDF reader known to man then advertising it so much that everyone downloaded it ;) I don't know how they managed to create incompatibilities, but they did, so people on Windows avoid PDFs.

What incentive does Apple have to do tis? It's already been made free. Why would they dump a bunch of resources into making their free software better?

Steve Jobs would like this

In 1997, Steve Jobs rebuked persons similar to the ones in this thread who are bashing Microsoft Office for iPad right now. The bitterness needs to end and its quite obvious that using iPad doesn't mean you need to hate Microsoft products. They are a software company, they do make great software. This is not 1990 with Windows 3.0 or 1995 with Windows 95.

If Steve Jobs was alive, he would be smiling about this and even beaming on stage and using it as a marketing tool to say that we Office on iPad first, even before Windows 8. Stop with the bitterness guys, in fact, if you don't like it, don't use it or download it or use the BS 'oh, I just tried it and deleted it'. You are only telling us, you were hoping it was free so you could switch from the crappy alternatives.
