Who cares about icon designs? And I'll bet the next version of OSX will have a similar design language to iOS. There's only so much Apple engineers could accomplish in 7 months or so.

And for people that complain about iOS is the screen below really pleasing to the eye? Could you quickly glance at that screen and really get information from it? My eyes are darting all over the place not sure what to focus on.

Good one. I must be one of the only ones who doesnt get the Tile thing. For me its just a messy collection of irregularly shaped icons.

This is going to to bring us back to Mac Vs PC…

But this time it's all about the mobile devices.

Microsoft will deliver phones and tablets that support word and spreadsheets, while Apple will revisit the cool and fun aspect of music, movies and games.

MS already does that. MS's problem is that it's hardware isn't sleek and Windows 8 not well understood or embraced by many. This isn't going to be a revision of Mac vs PC because for one thing you ignore Android. Another: business have adopted the iOS platform, unlike the soundly rejected Mac in the early 80s. Apple is actively reaching out to the business community this time and iOS is positioned to be much more than fun and games.

Glad I came to MacRumors today for this vital piece of Apple news!

Geez lets see, probably one of the biggest mobile related stories this year, and given how important the mobile sector is to Apple, just maybe, this is big news.

Now had apple not had an iphone, I see where you are coming from.

----------

I think Nokia should just go back to it's roots and return making winter tyres, rubber boots and communication/electrical cables. :D

No way, phones all the way!

Two that come to mind.

Nokia 6110 for the snake game and the the indestructible Nokia 3310!!!

You could run over the 3310 and it would still work!

For me the problem has never been the phone or the OS. I was close to purchasing the Lumia 920 and really like Windows Phone OS. The problem for me is the app store. If i was Microsoft this would be my area of focus.

When the iPhone first came out it was nice but totally pointless. Then the app store came along and made it a device i couldn't live without. I would definitely consider a Nokia device once the app store has more than just angry birds (which i don't like anyways).

Every time I see the tiles on a Windows machine, I think "if I only had the "z", I could spell "zoo" and get a triple word score".....

Of course you can. Most of the icons on that screen are recognised brand icons or icons representing functionality. Your statement holds true to someone picking up an iphone for the first time.

The problem here is you have chosen a heavily configured homepage. The stock homepage that comes with windows 8 is very easy to undertand.

I could put together a homepage of an iphone that will have someone scratching thier head what is going on, cause they will not be able to associate the icons with the apps.

Spot on. I think the 925 is an awesome phone, I was so close to updating from my IP5 to it, till I realised that alot of the apps I use on a daily basis do not exist under WP OS.

The issue is that when orgs make these apps its alwasy ios and android, This is what Microsoft need to crack

Oh no the ship is sinking, what should we do?

Quick, take on more cargo!

The ship was sinking, until Balmer was told to take a walk. Once his replacement is in they would have to be an 80 year old technophobe not to turn MS around - its very clear whats wrong with them, and it needs someone who's prepared to go in and for 80% of the management - once thats done MS will have no problem sorting its affairs out.

They obviously have a plan for Nokia else they wouldn't have done it.

So your saying he didn't get this box?

Image

I did a search and thats the only box I could see. Could not find the AT&T box he was referring to. But I did look at a few unboxings on youtube and this is the box I saw.

Image

A massive difference there. Why would Nokia allow the carriers to totally butcher their nice enough box for that plain carrier crap for a box? No wonder people are hesitant to buy it? A nice box is like looking at your food. If it does not give a good first impression it will taint people's feelings as they use the device.

Microsoft need to insist that the Nokia phones have Nokia boxing and not carrier boxing. Yes it does matter.

I wrote that post and I'm the one who got the **** AT&T box. The whole experience was disappointing and it's a shame that these companies let the carriers take so much control.

Microsoft will have to do a lot of soul searching and actually tip their platform upside down and inside out to have any chance for Windows 9. If they're not scrapping the foundations of Windows 8 already for the next version; Nokia and Windows Mobile will be another dead loss.

I'm just sad to see another competitor go and narrow the already shrinking market in terms of diversity. Plenty of Android clones don't count as they're all based off the same software platform.

Apple will need to still to be careful not to get too complacent like they did with iOS6/iP5. :p

Sure, there's some potential with the Microsoft-Nokia deal being the ticket to bring Microsoft some mobile mojo. But that's not the most important factor for success. All of this means squat if Microsoft cannot find a capable CEO to replace Ballmer.

In fact, the next CEO's job just got even more complex, more difficult, more demanding. He has some very big shoes to fill. The expectation will be extremely high for him to perform.

I don't think it will be difficult to find a CEO more capable than Ballmer..All of this means squat if they cannot find a way to plug the hole in the bottom of the Microsoft ship. If you ask me, Microsoft just needs to get back to doing what Microsoft does best.

However, Google is now just starting to integrate their purchase of Motorola.
Too little, too late? There are two companies vertically integrating on the same platform. Google/Motorola integrates software and service development with phone assembly. Samsung integrates parts manufacturing and development as well as device assembly and marketing. This way Samsung phones will always have better parts at a lower price, compared to Motorola. And Motorola can't compete on price, because they would bleed money. So most people will never see the Motorola Nexus experience. Googles new services will only be propagated to the masses if also available on Samsung Galaxy. And there goes your competitive advantage. The most valuable parts of Android are for free. So they belong to Samsung already.
Apple is integrating the two platforms via iCloud.
And via AirDrop which as of today has two different icons on iOS 7 and OSX 10.8.
Interesting times we are living in.
Its all about the cooperation of corporations. Its impressive how Apples „we do everything ourselves“ approach stacks up against other more cooperative business models. There is one bit of intellectual property, Apple gave away for free, WebKit. And look how much influence Google gained with Chrome from exploiting it. Now Samsung is doing the same to them with free Android.

You have to understand the mentality on these forums, though...many feel that if you discuss anything not made by Apple (check out any discussion of Android vs iPhone on these forums), you're beaten down, and basically ordered to leave.

So it's not surprising, really, that some take offense to a news story about MS.

Just you? You and about 100 billion other people that hate Windows 8. ;)

I think this is a great opportunity for Fisher Price to get into technology products. 3-8 year olds would get it. :)

Ohh isn't that cute, look at them trying...

They should come out with their own stores while they're at it! Wait...

So are the people throwing a hissy fit about "you are not allowed to talk about android phones on a Mac site", also pitching a fit here?

Seems that being cognizant of the overall industry is helpful in determining Apple's potential future moves. Gee imagine that.

smh

To me it is another example of Microsoft really not being able to innovate by themselves. It always seems as if they only succeed with their third or fourth try after the rest of the world has shown the way.

I wish them well - I personally won't be buying a Windows phone anyway but competition is always good in the market.

Interesting to see what the Windows phone will look like in 2-3 years because it will take that long to really integrate and come out with an actually new product

Lenovo's, Acer's, and Asus' sales grew by quite a bit last year. Yeah, the PC market shrunk 10-15% last year, but it's only really hurting the old mainstays: Dell and HP.

And I doubt MS will be giving up on their old Windows standards. I think that'll continue par for the course.

I predict that Microsoft will buy Dell within six months and HP/Compaq will move to Linux servers, Google Chrome O/S personal computers and Android tablets.

Lenovo, Acer and Asus will fight it out at the low end of the PC market while Dell (after it is rebranded under Microsoft) will focus on high end devices that compete directly with Apple's MacBooks, iMacs, Mac mini's and Mac Pros.

Nice strawman there - that's an alleged screenshot from an as-yet unreleased Nokia with a 6-inch display.
