Don't be so naive. You'll find that any internet content/service provider will have full access to your information/data. Apple would typically receive dozens of requests each day to make a users data available should a user be under criminal investigation for example.

Agencies like GCHQ have pretty much open access to everything (and I do mean literally everything) that passes through the internet anyway, encrypted or not.

sorry was typing that before bed. i meant regular access to your files. there's no reason for Apple to continuously inspect your files, while microsoft, a search company, has a million ways to use your data

On what connection can you upload 75TB? How long will it take to download them back?

I can only imagine this is a group of software and media pirates uploading everything to share, but thats a stupid idea because if you get caught then your going to jail

Hopefully this doesn't give other cloud providers ideas. I have a 23 GB free account which Dropbox said is "for life".

Microsoft could have found other solutions to this problem instead of punishing the entire population of Skydrive users with a blanket reduction in storage.

A "fair use" policy or caps on maximum file sizes per file would have done the same job, but it's pretty clear Microsoft chose money over sense here.

I'm sensing that Microsoft will soon renege on this when they realise how badly they've cocked up.

Think about it - How does 1 person or even a family accrue 75TB of data?

This was something nefarious going on with those accounts. And I'm betting the "UNLIMITED" that you agreed to says somewhere in the fine print - "Unlimited for Office 365 Files" or for "Personal Data" not the entirety of your neighborhoods PirateBay downloads archive.

I probably have more than 75TB in legitimately owned iTunes, Steam, Blizzard, and other services. This isn't the 90s anymore, I can fill up a 1TB drive VERY fast.

But whose life? A-ha! "Unfortunately due to our office canary dying we have to limit the free accounts to 2.5 GB, soz"
Yes, the canary's wellbeing worries me a bit. Should they change their free tier offers, I'd probably pay though. iCloud Drive in its current form is no option.

That people, like yourself, needlessly defend business decisions that are a disservice to their customers. .

Customers? Judging by your posts you are not a paying customer of OneDrive anyway. Why in the world would Microsoft want to keep you as a customer? So that you can use their 30gb for free and keep bashing Microsoft?

You are not their paying customer, so don't act like one. Go ahead and sign up for Apple's $1.99 for 50gb instead. But I guess you won't do that either. You just want everything for free.

That guy that thinks 75TB legally is not possible has no clue.
I own 500+ DVD's. I know someone that owns more.
Let's say those are BluRay instead.
At an average of 40GB per disk you gat to 20TB real fast.
I know someone that owns a DVD/BlueRay library four times the size of mine.
So while 75TB seems impossible it is not.

The bottom line is this, Microsoft and others have advertised "Unlimited" storage, data, etc.
If you don't want it to be used as such, then don't advertise it as such.
When you sell me unlimited and then claim I have abused it, how? It's unlimited or it's not!

Agreed....... I was merely talking to the 75TB. :D

My PVR saves about 15GB for a movie - and this *IS* legally acquired content. It supports also mounting network shares, and yes - I would actually prefer to host this PRIVATE data in the cloud. But who will give me 20TB of space for a reasonable price. It's just easier to buy a DROBO with 4x8TB disks (4x$170).

A combination of BT sync + Crashplan would do the work.

Putting aside what a disgraceful straw man this is, the free tier exists to add value to Microsoft's platform. In your own words: Microsoft isn't a charity.

How exactly am I abusing the system with the 15GB account that they're taking away? Or the 10GB camera upload bonus? In less than 10 months, MS reneged on both offers. I'm so glad I didn't pay for the larger tiers. I also made sure that everything I uploaded was encrypted first....MS has a sleazy history of
I was an early adopter of SkyDrive. I got 25GB because of it. Since then I've managed to accrue a total of 40GB.

So now come 2016 I'm being reduced to 10GB? How is that fair??
It's an interesting phenomenon how giving someone something freely can often create the perception that the thing given is owed

If people didn't abuse these services there would be no need for companies to go in and see what the hell was taking so much space.

If they advertise it as unlimited, you aren't abusing it. They obviously have some sort of limit in mind, so advertise it as that amount. This is 100% Microsoft's fault.

great. how about you give me access to your dropbox account then? i'm sure if you gave Dropbox interns access, you don't mind sharing with the world.

i'm using an encrypted volume on dropbox. not 100% fool proof, but it's a layer of security.

i don't mind Apple tracking since they don't really have any third parties to share data with.

don't care about credit card/social networking companies tracking me, as long as i'm not storing my files with them.

point is: if Microsoft is a search company, they have a million more ways to use your stored files vs the companies you listed.

Apple does not track? I guess you forget few years back people found a hidden code where they were tracking people's GPS or among other things. If you really think that any e-services don't track what you are doing third party or not than you are seriously paranoid and should seek medical attention.

I deem this a classless act from Microsoft, especially for reducing free user's storage from 15GB to 5GB. I did not use that much space and I am glad I did not. But I am sure many people will be put off by this. The inconvenience caused and the broken promise just really inconceivable for me.

There's no promise made or inferred, any EULA will allow the publisher to change the terms whenever they want.

The only people who are upset are the people who were using OneDrive for free. They are not entitled to anything so they have no basis for complaint when their free storage gets limited to 5GB. If they want more, then pay like the rest of us & stop crying.
I don't think you should be judging anyone regardless if they have it free or not. That's not your job to decide who makes the move.

I have 40 GB of OneDrive Storage right now. I'm only using about 5 gigs, and I'm storing a Ton of documents, some pictures, some songs, and my OneNote Notebooks. It's depressing that I am about to lose my extra 35 Gigs. Looks like I'm upgrading my iCloud plan and wiping everything off my OneDrive except my OneNote Notebooks. (I'll continue to use OneNote, as I am one of the weird ones that prefers it over Evernote for some reason.)

Sorry MS, you just gave me an reason to give Apple more money.

So you don't encrypt your stuff before uploading ANYWHERE to the internet, and instead make a snarky comment?

Your input = no thanks!

What does encrypting your files have anything to do with whether or not MS snoops on them? Point of the original post was why does MS find the need to see your uploads at all?

Your input = no thanks!

OneDrive: 100$ a year for 1tb for 5 people and Office for those 5

Still a good deal.
Yes and no, my desktop is 2TB. I went with Office 365 even after they opened up the office suite for full use for free because of the unlimited storage. If you say unlimited, you should fracking mean unlimited and not belly ache when some outliers start abusing the system.

I'm kind of glad they realized they couldn't do it earlier rather than later.

1. I didn't say Apple didn't track. I said I don't mind if Apple tracks me. Again, I said Apple doesn't have as many third parties to share the data with as with someone like Google or Microsoft (search companies).
2. You mean that bug? Of course I remember that. Again, read above, don't care if Apple tracks.

Try again.
