Disclaimer: I develop for iOS. Professionally.

iOS developers are not, as a whole, more magical or competent than other sets of developers. If iOS apps on average are more polished then that is a function of the APIs available to the devs.

There is more money in the App Store, true, and therefore more developers. But to make the assertion that the SDK is somehow lacking is ignorant. True, you are limited to doing thing the Apple Way, but that doesn't mean the API's are 'behind'.

Anyone who develops for iOS knows that you can use any and all C or C++ libraries (as long as they compile for ARM), which kinda makes any points about API shortcomings moot. Non-devs sure do like to whine for us though.

Microsoft you are not going to win over any apple fans with this AD, it might be better to attack android tablets at this point in time as they are more likely to leak.

Ios multi-tasking is just the way it's done to keep things snappy, four finger swip left or right gives you quick app switching that is dare i say it quicker than any kind of multitasking. Windows 8 handles it very poorly indeed in comparison.

It takes like 3-4 touches to get an app to do that in windows 8.

Microsoft go and get some respect out the trash you have sat on a monopoly so long you've forgotten how to fight.

Xcode is the best IDE I've ever used, seriously simple, and watching all the Core Animation candy as I drag UI elements to my view is bliss!

MS never has anything to sell so they have to trash their perceived competition.

The irony is, I don't think Microsoft even enter the consciousness of Mr Cook, as "competition"... they're just not worth falling out with, as they do things like this

I have yet to see sales figures from Microsoft or anyone else of Windows 8 tablets so these ads must not be achieving the desired effect.

The guy on the left would suck with ANY tablet. Honestly, he'd be even WORSE off on Windows 8

I get the impression that when Samsung attack Apple in commercials they at least hit a sore spot and hurt Apple's reputation a bit. But when Microsoft do it, it just seems to have no effect whatsoever. Maybe it's because of Microsofts reputation? Or maybe the products they're trying to advertise aren't very good?

I beg your pardon, but Apple has been doing this for 30 years now.

Well, the ads lately have been more of the 'this is what we do' kind.

I remember rolling my eyes at the switcher ads, and the later 'I'm a PC' ads were just as sigh-inducing for me.
Maybe because they pre-date my use of Apple computers.

That being said, I think this type of ad is a legitimate strategy when you are the one advertising an underdog product in the face of domination by the company you are pooh-poohing.

wait a minute; when did the surface (I think is the win 8 tablet shown in it) get 3G? If not then they need to show the full ad :p

If you constantly compare yourself to someone in any fashion, you care more about them than you're trying (not) to show. In addition to this, mocking them multiplies that level of caring x10.

Fact.

Of course since nobody is actually using a Windows tablet they are actually doing 0 things at once.

To be fair, they do seem to be doing okay for themselves...

The crucial word here is "okay". ;)

Edit:

If they ran an ad comparing their current tablet to their miserable failures which were XP - a Desktop OS - on earlier tablets, they'd earn more respect.

I disagree. Smart multitasking is far better than everything running even when it doesn't need to. IOS already allows for this already and I can use a multitude of music apps and route them together in ways Android and RT can't. Someone else actually posted a video demoing the process. The important stuff like being able to easily add members to a call or look up an map or be on Facebook while talking on the phone was on iPhone for years. I even realized I could be on a call and play a song allowing the other person to hear it. You had to cup your hand on the bottom of the phone, but still cool. Apple always adds dozens on features that they never talk about, like Android made a big deal out of the phone speaking text in 2011. The iPhone has always been able to do so. It's called voice over. This has been standard on Apple computers since 1984. Macs have had standard voice recognition since at least 2001. Another feature not pushed is that every mac since at least OS X has had a combined analog and digital headphone/ line output. This also applies to even the airport express. I love when I'm attaching my digital speakers and someone asks why is there a red like coming out of the cable.

Only the MacBook Pros now have the 5.1 optical out/digital out. MacBook Air does not.

Now, that's a well done commercial. And one that points out one of the major weaknesses of iOS.

No, there is no weakness. Apple has Macbook Air 11". If you want computing power in a small package Air is the better way to go.

Things sure have changed... Six years ago it was Apple making fun of the market leader (Microsoft) in computers, now it's Samsung and Microsoft making fun of the market leader (Apple) in phones and tablets... Or sort-of market leader in the iPhone's case.

any anti-Android advertising?

No? I guess those are not worthy to compare against. ;)

No?

It's because if you make an attack ad, you should aim towards the market leader, not the second place.

Just like Apple used to have attack ads on Windows PC and not Linux.
