Microsoft Releases Fourth Anti-iPad Ad Highlighting Windows 8 Multitasking Capabilities

LOL WUT? this is showing skype... skype is their own application... showing that they did a ***** job on their own application for another platform isn't exactly looking good on them if you know what you're looking at in this commercial...

The fact its Skype doesn't matter, if it was any video chat running on Windows it still wouldn't matter. You can pin ANY app to the side of the screen and still have it run in Windows 8.

No?

It's because if you make an attack ad, you should aim towards the market leader, not the second place.

Just like Apple used to have attack ads on Windows PC and not Linux.

I want to see that. That would be hilarious.
Mac and Windows guys: "Ew WTF Ubuntu, what have they done to you in version 11?!"

Xcode is the best IDE I've ever used, seriously simple, and watching all the Core Animation candy as I drag UI elements to my view is bliss!

LOL - nice!

Of course, anyone who has developed using other IDEs would soon notice that XCode is one piece of buggy ****, lacking functionality found in other IDEs. InterfaceBuilder is OK...

Skype on an iPad?

Like someone else mentioned, why would someone be using Skype on an iPad when they could have used FaceTime. Also FaceTime does not Freeze when you are looking at something online. But Skype, a Microsoft product, does Freeze when when you switch Apps....

Anyone who develops for iOS knows that you can use any and all C or C++ libraries (as long as they compile for ARM), which kinda makes any points about API shortcomings moot. Non-devs sure do like to whine for us though.

No, I know one case where that's not true: You can't use the BluetoothManager framework unless you want your app rejected from the App Store.

Interface Builder no longer exists, which is possibly why your thoughts on Xcode are as they are. You know that you could always substitute "is" with "was" or "can be"? It really isn't, now - ask MANY, MANY other devs here, and see what they say, however.

Cheers :)

Any app not made by Apple would do that as a result of iOS limitations.

Haha, nice. There are always people who hate Xcode for some reason, but I've used it a lot and really like it. The only bug I've found is when force-quitting iOS Simulator, Xcode gets stuck in the "running" state, but that might be related to my Xcode running in an OS X virtualized in VMWare.

This ad is much better than the previous ones. The other ones were literally mocking the Ipad using siri. this at least is more tasteful.

touche....these are indeed weak spots that MS is poking at. I wish my iPad had an I/O port, a way to EASILY switch between Apps, and a way not to have to be funneled thru iTunes for just about everything. It is almost like the original vision of the device was flawed and Apple designed themselves into a cul de sac and now they can't get out or are too proud to admit they blew it.

Love my iPad but it could be MUCH better. Thank God for competition!!!

I'm definitely pro-iPad. But does seeing this make anyone wonder if the iPhone is holding the iPad back in terms of functionality since one essentially never really has much over the other in terms of how the OS works?

Not to mention I'm pretty sure you switch from Facetime and the audio keeps going just fine (as long as you arent trying to play or record audio) which would make the ad false advertising

You're assuming that the agent has a Mac, or a computer equipped with Facetime. Fact is the vast majority of enterprise computers run Windows, and Facetime is not an option. If Facetime was an option for other OS, then it would be more accepted as an industry standard.

What is the deal with Macrumor's obsession with Win8 Tablet commercials? lol:D

It's because it hits a nerve with Apple fans to show a feature their product cannot do, and then they have to come up with reasons why such a feature it not needed.

When we all know, if this feature WAS an Apple feature and the competition could not go it, it would be the most amazing feature ever.

You see this same scenario pan out year after year with many posters on these forums.

You have it, we don't = It's junk and we don't want it
We have it, you don't = it's amazing and your product sucks

:(

If I understand it correctly, it is more related to the hardware design rather than software right? iOS should be able to do multitasking just the HW might not be able to support?

That is a bad misunderstanding.

The hardware is absolutely capable of multi-tasking. You have two powerful CPUs, plus powerful graphics hardware that can be used for calculations via OpenCL. The software is absolutely capable of multitasking. The OS has exactly the same multi-tasking features as MacOS X. So why is multi-tasking limited for applications?

It is purely intentional. A phone has very limited power supply. Multiple apps actively running at the same time will drain your battery very quickly. Therefore apps are only allowed to run actively while in the background for very specific purposes, where the advantage for the user outweighs the battery cost. For example, an app that plays music in the background and is therefore allowed to run actively in the background can do _anything_ in the background (but risks being thrown off the App Store if it takes advantage of that).

The big difference in this

is the market share of the company doing the guerilla marketing stuff. It was one thing when Apple started advertising their computer versus Windows, because Apple had about 2% of the market when they started. So you can be the "little guy." Now, the Windows monopoly still exists, though Windows 8 is a trip to nowhere. Microsoft is trying to do a very tricky transition, and the awkward stage of Windows 8 only means they have further to go.

The lightning connector is an I/O port.

What's so hard about swiping or double tapping the home button to switch apps?

Funneled through iTunes... Don't Windows RT tablets have to be funneled through the Microsoft Store for apps? And if they don't, you'd probably be best served if you stick to it anyway.

I wouldn't assume Apple programmed themselves into a corner when they still lead the market in just about every category. And their other OS is Mac OS X, I'm pretty sure they're aware of both approaches to a personal computer OS. That said, I would've liked to see some "desk accessory" functionality in iOS 7, it could give much of the function of having two apps share the screen (Messages, Notes for example).

The guy with the iPad has more problems than owning an iPad. If you are as inept as that guy, the other guy could have been thumbing through a MLB stats (actual) book and still made out better. BTW, of all the things I wish my iPad could do, multitasking as MS sees it, is not one of them.

Why not a steam engine and a coffee maker, too?

I thought the first one with the playing chopsticks was pretty good and funny but they're beating a dead horse now

Or maybe it's because people agree with the reasoning behind Apple's decisions? After all, who in the past three years has said that proper multitasking wouldn't be a nice thing to have? The reason why people are defending the iPad's lack of true multitasking is because of the positive effect that has on battery life. It's one reason that the iPad has the best battery life of any tablet without a bulky battery attachment. I assume Microsoft failed to mention battery life in their ad.

And if people defending Apple irritates you... why are you on a forum dedicated to Apple? Whatever you personally feel about Apple, obviously plenty of people here feel differently.

it's not multitasking, he still do one one things at once, multitasking is make 2 or more things together, ios is not capable.
this is one of side effect of ios7 "monostasking":

If you really think about it, the human eye can only view one thing at a time. Can you read two books at the same time? Can you read two emails at the same time? Can you type two different documents at the same time? Can you play two different videogames at the same time?

This whole idea of multitasking is overrated, IMO. Trying to get a gadget to do something you can't even do as human makes no sense.

This ad reminds me of the one from AT&T bashing Verizon about how AT&T's network allowed you to surf and talk at the same time while Verizon didn't, and my judgement then is the same now:

That's neat, but how often do you actually find it helpful?
