is it just me, or are other people really getting a lot of that "too many files are open" message when trying to (unsuccessfully) save documents?

It happened once in a while using 12.1.0/1, now with 12.1.3 it happens a lot. I have to lose data. This is complete BS.

People say this error has been encountered since the days of office mac 2004.

I will not be purchasing office mac 2012, period.

Nadyne - Thank You!

Nadyne,

Thank you so much for the clarification. There is so much "static" on this thread that it's hard to actually find real information.

And many of us truly appreciate your bravery and assistance. May there be a special place in heaven for you.

For those of you Entourage users in Exchange environments where you're having issues sending and responding to invitations, we've released Office 12.1.4 today. You can download it from Mactopia now. Our Auto-Update servers tend to take an extra few hours for all of the bits to show up, so if you don't see it via Auto-Update immediately,

If you'd like more details about the problem and what we're doing to avoid having this kind of problem in the future, one of our Entourage leads posted to Mac Mojo a post titled 12.1.4 fixes Entourage meeting invite issue.

Thanks so much for your reports of this issue. We got a lot of great data from the users who encountered this issue, which meant that we were able to get this fixed and in your hands two weeks after the problem surfaced. Please accept our apologies for introducing this problem in the first place.

Regards,
Nadyne.

For those of you Entourage users in Exchange environments...

Hi Nadyne. I just installed 12.1.4 but am now getting several different connection errors, to Exchange Server. I am getting an Error 3176 and Error 17896. I am not sure why these would be introduced just now. Would installing the update affect my network settings or Entourage settings? Is there a quick and easy way to remedy this?

I'm using Office 2008 12.1.2. I've tried everything I know to update it, even reinstalling Office, but nothing works, including using the auto-update and manually downloading the update. Any other advice you might be willing to give? According to the information I've seen, at least one of the updates has been deemed critical. I guess that means I need it. :)

I've had a Mac since before they had hard drives. I've never had as much trouble updating a program as I've had with Office 2008.

Thanks.

Forgot to add that I'm using OSX 10.4.11. Not certain this makes a difference, but thought I'd add it anyway.

How-to fix the 'not found' error

Hi - I just installed 12.1.3 (and 12.1.4) and initially was faced with "A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume"

Guess this was due to either me using Monolingual, or recent migration to a new mac.

Anyway, here's how I fixed it:

1 - download the update file manually (for 12.1.3, it's here)
2 - mount the disk image and drag out the updater to save it somewhere useful (I used my desktop)
3 - ctrl+click and choose "Show Package Contents"
4 - browse to Contents -> Resources
5 - open the file package_updateable in your favourite text editor
6 - change the second last line from sys.exit(48) to found_valid_version=True
7 - choose 'Save,' agreeing to any read-only warning you see
8 - back out to wherever you saved the updater and run it

Do at your own risk; make backups; be sure you know what you're doing; only run this if you're sure you currently have 12.1.2 installed fully.

I ended up with a problem with the Japanese proofing tool (!) which caused Word to keep crashing so I just removed it, since I don't do much typing in Japanese. YMMV.

Good luck!

What happens when you try to update?

"You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.3 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume."

This is the same notice when I tried to update to 12.1.4, which is understandable if you think about it. BTW, I tried it both with auto update as well as a manual download.

I had to go back and uninstall Office 2008 back whenever, just so I could update to 12.1.2. I used a program, forgot which one, to reduce the extra "language files" that I wasn't going to use. When I reinstalled, I did NOT take out the extra language files this time.

Do I have to go through uninstalling and reinstalling AGAIN?

Thanks.

Do I have to go through uninstalling and reinstalling AGAIN?

When you uninstalled Office, how did you do it? Did you just delete the folder, or did you run the Remove Office app?

After you re-installed Office, did you make any changes to the folder? You said that you didn't run a language-removal app like Monolingual or Xslimmer. Did you move or rename the Office folder? Did you run any other kind of application that removes language files or removes the files for running on other architectures?

Nadyne.
