Ugh, outlook syncing to Exchange 2010 is still slow. Emails hit my iPhone instantly, as well as Outlook 2010. As for the Outlook 2011, it takes up to 30 seconds. Maybe they need to improve EWS???
Very slow on Office 2007, too. My 1G iPod Touch was faster.
They made Mac OS office very similar to the windows counterpart in the 2011 version. Granted its not 100% the same but the gap between office 2011 on mac and office 2011 on windows is very tiny now.
They made 2011 similar to 2007, not 2010.

That's enough reason for me not to buy it. The ridiculous illogical placement of buttons on that damned ribbon destroys the user experience to such an extent that I can live with iWorks only.

It's about time Microsoft starts talking to actual users. I work in the typical MS Office business environment and I have NEVER met anyone who is completely happy with the user experience of the office package.

Do you mean you have actually met people that are totally happy. Really dam your lucky I have never met people in all my life that did not bitch about everything...take your pick they hate something of it even their own kids. :rolleyes:
 
Kudos to Microsoft for continuing to support Office 2004 (released in 2003) for 7 years after it was released. That's a pretty long time of support. Apparently it will continue until January.
 
Does anyone know if this update fixes the issue of Office depositing some 'recovered files' in the trash upon every boot? That was sooo annoying. Every time I booted, I'd have to empty the trash. Other people had the same issue, but there wasn't a proper solution. One Microsoft employee just said, 'it's safe to empty your trash.' That's not the solution we're looking for! Why are random files being generated in the trash in the first place?! Sorry. =)
 
A little off topic, but question for those who need Office software, and also run Parallels/Fusion: Do you prefer Office For Mac, or do you prefer to run "regular" Office in Parallels/Fusion? Thanks.

I would very much prefer to use the native Mac versions but they are not sufficient at times. My documents often start out as slides with diagrams, which I then reuse in a word document when the details are nailed down. Have you ever tried copying diagrams from PowerPoint to word or vice-versa? (as diagrams, not slides) Everything gets messed up and font spacing goes for a toss.

The only real way to keep your sanity is to use visio for the diagrams. And visio isn't available for the Mac, nor can you edit the diagrams in word. So, fusion + xp + office 2010 it is.

Yes, I could use omni graffle pro in lieu of visio, but it's ~$200 and I got visio for $10 under microsoft's home use program.

It does. You need to go into Tools --> Synch Services and enable calendar sync. I then restarted Outlook and iTunes, synced my iPhone (Info --> Advanced --> Replace info on this iPhone) and everything was there when I went into the calendar.

EDIT: It also keeps the category colours from Outlook which is awesome, as Entourage never managed to do this.

In answer to my own question, I've found out that Office 2011 STILL puts random 'wkresources' files in the trash upon bootup. What's up with that?
 
aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh I want to buy this!!!! But alas I cannot afford it at present, well it depends on if I get a 3DS next weekend or not. But having used the demo of Outlook I love it, much better then Mail IMO.

If anyone knows of a cheaper price then around £160 in the UK let me know cause that's the best I've found.

Outlook still only works with gmail email. There is no support for gmail calendars, contacts, todo's, etc...

Outlook is still unusable.

I ditched Outlook for the simple reason that the "rules" suck. I can get rules to "move" emails to folders, but Outlook but what it really does is "copy" the emails and leaves the email in my inbox. Even then it's hit or miss.

I use Office 2011, enjoy ribbon the most.

I use Office 2011 too, except for Outlook and HATE the ribbon. I wish there was an option to turn it on and off. It's obnoxious.
 
Have you actually used it or are you just talking crap? The new version is actually really good and in my opinion BETTER than Apples product.

Agreed. A lot of people gave the previous Office crap (and rightfully so), but I've been very impressed with Office '11 and haven't looked back.

Dropped Apple Mail for Outlook, gave up on Pages a long long time ago, and Keynote's a nice toy to play with time to time. Office '11 for Mac is a very impressive showing on Microsoft's part.
 
The cheapest price is free off of The Pirate Bay. If you're unethical.

Be careful. Usually any software updates render it useless. And re-installing it won't help either. Turn auto update off.

Well, I just recently switched from Windows to Mac OS X. In Windows, one is able to sync Outlook through iTunes with the iPhone. But in OS X, iTunes shows only the sync options with iCal and Address Book contacts, nothing from Outlook. I'm probably missing something here and would appreciate some enlightenment. Thanks to anyone in advance!
 
Gutted, seems there's still no support for syncing google calendars or am i missing something?
 
Pages and Number are TRASH compared to Word and Excel(especially excel)

Keynote is actually pretty good!

I use MS Office, iWork and even OpenOffice.org. I never said Word and Excel were bad (I think they are great) -- only that I also think Pages and Numbers and Keynote are great too (especially Keynote). Each has their purpose. Pages is fantastic for creating a single page layout from their templates. Numbers does a rocking job of creating fluffy charts and diagrams for you to copy/paste into other things (it also does a nice job letting you categorize by column).

If I am working with a large data set I prefer Excel or OpenOffice.org depending on which makes it easier to crunch the numbers in my desired way. When I am writing a large document (like a technical specification), again I turn to MS Word or OpenOffice.org, since Pages seems to do better at single page layouts and is less robust when working with large documents. I tend to prefer OpenOffice.org when I need to make sure my documents are portable to others who have not chosen to fork over hundreds of dollars to Microsoft.

Actually you can turn the ribbon on and off, and you can even modify what appears in the ribbon. Open one of the Office applications, like Word for example, in the top right in-line with the ribbon, you should see a gear icon, click it, a you'll see a drop-down menu, then select "ribbon preferences," from there you'll be able to customize the ribbon, and even turn it off.
 
The MS products have more functionality for sure ... question is if really everyone needs everything from that functionality. For most home users and even some business users iWorks does everything they need and is therefore a cheaper option that does the trick. Many business customers (and few home users) need stuff that iWork does not offer, but MS Office does.

Bottom line: depends on your use case -> bold statements like Product A is better then B are rarely true since it usually depends on many things.

If you need to compose a grocery list or a flier for your next garage sale then iWurk is for you I guess but for the rest of us that actually need to collaborate with other people in the real world, no thanks.
 
Cool, they have ALWAYS had issues with saving toolbar, menu and keyboard shortcut settings between launches. The day I installed Office 2011 I had both Word and Excel 'unexpectedly' quit on me while trying to adjust such things to my liking. Since then they've sometimes just blatantly and with intent to wound reverted to default settings, grrr.

The ribbon in '11 does still need some work - they did a great job with it in '10 on Windows, where it is fully customisable, even if it ALSO has major issues with saving the changes - you have to make all the changes in one sweep or it keeps reverting. The customisability in '11 is lacking and for whatever reason they made the ribbons very different from their Windows equivalents - probably just to make it harder for switchers lol.

Looking forward to seeing what else if anything is new. Doesn't look like they included any fixes for the much-in-need Messenger.... Nevermind.

To be fair the Office '11 apps aren't 100% compatible, or at least not 100% 'exact'. Their preview last year had the guy saying for Word they had printed files out and made sure they were exactly the same between Windows and Mac. Oh how I wish they had done the same with Excel! Graphs, margins, page sizes and how they all relate together STILL cause quite some changes when crossing platforms.
